Take-Two vs The GTA Modding Community, 2021 E&E Edition

Recommended Posts

GTA Modding is dying out because of Take-2 being litigious cunts

Many projects have been canceled and the few that remained are closing shop/shutting down.

Sucks to see it happen but this is to be expected when it comes to corporate greed

If I can make a counterpoint, the modding scene in Russia like Criminal Russia, etc. are alive and stronger than ever. Very likely so because they aren't blatantly porting other GTA maps and making stuff from scratch :shillkek:

your counterpoint doesnt mean much considering

A. Criminal Russia's development has been dead for several years, the only thing alive is the multiplayer version of the map for roleplay

B. A lot of the devs making maps from scratch are getting burnt out or moving to games like BeamNG, especially considering that Take-Twos modding agreement for GTA outlaws custom maps.

C. The more experienced modders have pretty much all but quit GTA modding, moving on to game development or whatever else

D. the people that are still around are driven by greed, locking maps and other stuff behind a paywall like patreon

You are absolutely right. And I don't understand what income R* is missing due to free mods.
Stealing intelectual property to make your own game or to sell it to another company of course is another story.
Mods on the other hand are often something that makes people buy a game in the first please or makes them enjoy a game much longer and therefore maybe encourage players to buy another dlc or ingame money.
In my opinion (or wishful thinking), a game publisher should really work together with the modding community, not against it.

Idk how dead it is since they released a winter pack with missions for it in 2021 lol. But even if it's just for multiplayer, wouldn't T2 have taken down CR's map? And don't forget they have Province and even GTA Anderius that haven't been touched. Rockstar only wants to take down stuff that encroaches on games they already made before, everything else is fair game.

See above; smaller communities are still actively making original maps that stay up because they don't encroach on anything Rockstar originally did.

>implying this isn't the case with other game mods

Can you imagine the nightmare of a situation that Russian dude has to go through all for a f*cking GTA IV savefile. Poor bastard.

It breaks my heart to see that the modding scene for the GTA series are slowly but surely dying due to T2 greed and stubborness and how they putted the modders into a lose-lose situation.

If they refused to stop making mods they'll get sued with a sh*tton of money most of them doesn't even have, and if they couldn't manage to pay they'll get arrested for how long.

If they decided to stop modding GTA their next option is move into mod-friendly games (The Elder Scrolls, Fallout, Half-Life etc), because they'll not going to waste all of their modding experience they learned for years for nothing.

I know I know. T2 is not going after every modder in the community as a lot of them seem to not being bothered by T2 and they get away with it very easily but the ones that are - are, imagine the nightmare situation that Russian dude has to go through all because he posted a f*cking GTA IV savefile.

It's a shame that c-sucker Shark Card Zelnick is gonna be T2 CEO till 2029.

Crazy mods were part of GTA world for me, all these myth hunting mods or superhero mods were vital part of any gta till V.

Games like GTA:SA never be forgotten, but I think gta v will be forgotten next week after they cut online part of game.

Gta 6 has already 30 pages of hating it and its before release, how mighty has fallen. Never thought I would despise take 2 and rockstar and was barely interested in GTA 6 .

And even so, he'll probably just be replaced with someone just as bad, if not worse.

Did T2 told GTAF mods to remove the Stars & Stripes Mod thread?

Mod makers asked for it, plus T2 goes after mod download sources, not discussion forums about them, we've never gotten any issues with threads of mods that were taken down in the past, this is just a discussion hub. I shouldn't even be posting this as it's from DM's but just so you know:

Didn’t it also get removed because the whole thread was just an echo chamber of bigotry and toxicity or was the decision to remove it after it got locked?

It's now active in Discord and Nexus Mods actually.

I know it's more or less irrelevant, I could be off topic as well if that even matters at all by now, but I couldn't find more appropriate place to put this - ironically or not. EA just released source codes for some of their older games. Yes, that EA.

Our guys here got sued for doing t2's job. Release the 3DU games source codes for god's sake, you cheap bums.

EA also added Workshop support for the said C&C games as well (except Red Alert 2). I could dream of GTA recieving a similar treatment with official mod support, but alas, Rockstar and Take-2 like treating mod makers and their fans like radioactive waste more than doing anything good to their franchise's legacy.

Except, even radioactive waste gets handled with care. Jokes aside, yeah, couldn't agree more. EA rates higher in my eyes than t2. Or rockstar for that matter. What a time to be alive.
