Nothing like a """settlement""" that's exclusively harmful to the modder side to cap off this sh*tshow tbh

How do we know it’s gonna be harmful to us if we don’t know the details?

When has a lawsuit perpetrated by an abusive corporation ended positively?

Knowing Take-Two, I have zero confidence that they will ever allow work on the reverse-engineered games to resume (let alone walking back on the general anti-modding stance that they’ve had since 2017); but fingers crossed that whatever settlement was reached doesn’t screw over the devs who poured their hearts and souls into re3/reVC. No matter what happens, I wish them the absolute best.

In a perfect world R* pulls a CDPR, hires them and hand them over the source code of the classic trilogy to make the true definitive edition.

Oh, how I want to live in that world so badly...

Apart from that the lawsuit is over, nothing.

Finally, some good f*cking news! I am so happy knowing that our guys here can go and continue their lives normally, relieved from all the uncertainty and stress that future carried. It must have been so freeing to watch that unjust, sh*tty, corporate axe, hanging for way too long and way too close to your neck, finally gone. What it might mean for the project in the end? I don't give a f*ck, sadly, I really don't. Should have they continued with the case and risk it further? f*ck all that. f*ck turd2 and joketard.

Glad those evil f*cking pricks finally decided to back off. Guess they realised they don't have sh*t for a case.

I'm just wondering if this means the re3/VC project can continue.

Pretty sure a settlement means that the re3 team would have to pay Take-Two some money as compensation for the reverse-engineering, I guess... 🤔

A settlement could mean anything and we may never know what it is because it's usually not published in public court documents.

It could still be monetary compensation (just not full damages), not being able to release mods for any Take-Two game anymore, or any kind of deal like that. It looks like it's still currently in the "deciding what this settlement is" stage, and it was the expected outcome for this re3 suit I suppose, as this is similar to what happened to that one lawsuit over that RDR1 mod and its creator.

Take-Two never want to take stuff like this all the way cause it's dogsh*t PR and they know it. While I'm completely against going after modders like they do, their M.O. with this stuff is consistent. They send a C&D that if complied with means the end of it, if the modders persist or otherwise try to fight it, Take-Two will take them to court, as if they get caught in a bluff it means they (T2) are f*cked trying to stop it going forward. I imagine the settlement will be less Take-Two backing down and more the pressure of normal people trying to take on a massive corporation finally was too much. I doubt T2 will go for money though I may be wrong, but I would expect that as part of the settlement agreement the modders agree to never mod Take-Two games again.

This sounds like the most likely scenario (although a part of me still believes Take-Two is petty enough to try going for the money in addition to forcing the modders to cease all work on their IPs).

I strongly encourage you to hold on to and back up your copies of the original Trilogy for archival’s sake if you haven’t already, folks; because chances are the DE, warts and all, will continue to be the only official/convenient way to access these classics on the market for most people (PC gamers at least still have the option to buy the OGs on the RGL) for the foreseeable future. :cringekek:

UPDATE: For Xbox Series X|S users, might I suggest backing up your PS2 copies and playing those versions via RetroArch or XBSX2? It's not too hard to set up as long as you know what you're doing. SA runs like a dream at 4K on my X (I've tried also III and VC, but not as extensively).

I'm worried... If they agreed to never mod T2's games again, does this mean the Re3/VC project is ultimately cancelled? Please, let it not be what I think it would be...

Case has not been officially dismissed in court but I am pessimistic for future of re3 and potential forks.

And to think, at one point, Rockstar was more than happy to showcase things like Yeardly Diamond's videos or GTA 1's map being ported to IV on the Newswire.

Man, I missed it when Rockstar cared about its fans :(.

They obviously did it in case they ever add a Manhunt T-shirt to their decade-long cash cow GTA Online (I would have also said a Manhunt "themed" adversary mode, but that seems to have been a thing since 2015). That prototype footage is harmful Take-Two and their IPs, you guys! Just like that save file!

Talk about Streisand Effect. I didn't know that PSP beta even existed before today, now my curiosity has awakened. Cheers, Take-c*nt! 👍

Next thing you know, they'll probably do a similar thing to a beta of a Midnight Club game, another Rockstar franchise that hasn't had a new game in over a decade.

God forbid anyone see the beta intro that actually credits those at the studio that actually did the bulk of the work on it. Looks like Dixmor forums may have also been nuked?

While we wait for the settlement to be finalized, this might be a good opportunity to download and preserve documentation, posts, mods, and source code from anyone who was named in the re3 lawsuit. I wouldn't be surprised if part of the settlement is to cease any modding of any T2 game and remove all materials.

Spoiler

For those wondering, the Manhunt 2 PSP beta intro is a much longer cut of the original teaser trailer that has additional VO and scenes intermixed with developer credits - devs at Rockstar North and Rockstar Vienna. I actually kinda prefer it to the final intro.

for those that don't know, Rockstar Vienna did the majority of the work on Manhunt 2 and didn't get any credit in the final release:

From reading employee reviews at Rockstar: Rockstar omits credits of employees as a bullying tactic really.

I'd love for development on re3/VC to recommence, but as I've mentioned before, I'm sadly not holding my breath as long as the DE is a thing. At least Take-Two has dropped the case (for now).

Spoiler

The fact that the case was dismissed without prejudice for the 10 John Does doesn't instill me with much confidence that T2 will be more lenient in the future, though.
