zPhoenix
I know I can hit Esc and start a new Online or Story session, which disconnects me from the current session. Or I can hit Quit Game and exist completely. But there are times when I need to leave the session for a while (i.e.: toilet, lunch, etc) and at least in RDO it is not safe to leave your character lying around unless you are back at camp... and much of the time you want to return to the exact same location you were at when you restart a session. So, the ideal option would be to fully exit the session but not the game, going either back to the Online menu or back to the main menu where you choose Story vs Online. Is there a way to ending the session without closing the game or starting a new session?
4eyedcoupe
Other than what you previously listed, no. I find the moonshine shack is safest for needing to be AFK. I also do the PO and camp lockbox. If you sit at the a table in the shine shack you won't get kicked. Funny, I left mine standing in the stairway of the shack the other day. I was outside IRL for a while, after a few hours went back expecting to be kicked and my guy was just standing there. kcole4001
kcole4001
You can also open the catalogue to go AFK for a while. Maybe even while inside the shine shack to be perfectly safe? (never tried it) edit: I think starting to enter showdown or whatever then backing out puts you back in the menu? FRIDA_KAHLO
Don't trust the catalog to protect you though, but I use it to signal I am AFK. My favorite is standing on the gallows in Blackwater. But I dunno if there’s real safety in the boonies, ‘cept cough up a couple bucks move the camp to that county Edited July 22, 2021 by FRIDA_KAHLO kcole4001

Yeah, you hit story and exit. Then you are back at the menu, like other guy said, having exited your session. Change your outfit first, even if you change it back, to force a save. But if going AFK, like other people said, I get in my moonshine shack and open the catalog (so I don't get kicked either.) zPhoenix
Thanks for the Esc/Story/Exit idea. Will be perfect for when I need to go but want to return to the same spot in the next session. For just idling with no kick I like telling the shack's band to play and then sitting at the table in front of them. Works great when making a batch of moonshine, and do errands around the house while the toon waits. TCA
Best way is go to camp then open the trader menu. I do this if I need to run some where real quick and at times I would be gone for 20-30 mins, I’m still in game when I get back. kcole4001
Chaperon Noir
Changing your appearance will log you out, leaving the menu after that is free and returns you to the same area. I've found the loading times to be faster as well. Edited July 23, 2021 by Chaperon Noir FRIDA_KAHLO

IIRC, there is an option from the main menu that puts you back where you left off (rather than back at camp or wherever): the one labelled "Free Roam", like so: Of course, you want to make sure the game has saved before you exit, so that it loads you into Free Roam close to where you were when you exited the game - so make sure to open up the catalogue, or pull up the Gold Bar store page, or anything else that forces a save (changing outfit usually works for me). As was said it's this, you don't have to force save with this method either as it does it automatically (I have never had issues with the game not saving when I exit to the menu like this.)
