So it's been officialy 7 months (212 days) since last update. In the comparsion, a drought between Moonshiners and Naturalist update was 228 days.

And bought out then killed off a ton of good studios gate keeping the great IPs for all of eternity. Not saying TakeTwo is blessing us... Hey how 'bout Warner Bros Games copyrighting gameplay elements paving the way for no more gameplay inovations, we're dealing with a evil industry. Ah saw EA it caused a offtopic ramble of hate!

And then the pandemic was the excuse... which now is long overdue considering the quarantine measures are well gone in the west. My guess,  they have circa 80% of their team invested in gtaV EE and GTAVI, 15% focused in gta online and the remaining 5% with rdo. Nothing else make sense.

I also play "No Man's Sky", with the time I'm not playing RDO; these are the two things I mainly play to unwind, on Xbox One. 

I think it is mainly because 97 percent of new games are HORRIBLY BAD!

 

Anyway, "No Man's Sky" updates since October 28, 2020 (so somewhere around 240 days?)

 

Next Generation Update (mainly great graphical advances for Xbox Series X and PS5 players.)

Companions Update (added ability for players to adopt pets, feed pets, get eggs from pets and manipulate the eggs for size/color of the next gen of pets!)

Expeditions Update (special save game file of a new game, with a limited time, where the things you earn can be used in any other save of yours.)

Prisms Update (mainly more updated visuals, mainly for next gen consoles and uber PCS, along with being able to tame "low flying" pets now too.)

 

All those updates included more things than I mention too, such as bug fixes quality of life upgrades etc.

 

I play these two games because I think they kind of balance each other out

 

By the way, Prisms was as recent as June 2, 2021, so NMS players are expecting another update (probably rightfully so!)

The best thing that could happen to RDO is for another company to buy it.

The pandemic was an excuse certain players made to cut R* some slack. Funny how other game developers had no problems issuing top notch updates and fixes for their games the entire time. No, the pandemic is not an excuse R* can use. Laziness, disinterest, incompetence....those are more likely reasons.

Wouldn't need competition if a quality developer bought RDO and started to get it to it's potential. RDO is never going to get there under R*.

 

I haven't looked around but as far as I know there is no one developing a western game that can come close to RDO, I may be wrong, so any competion is years and years away if someone began developing one today.

I think the success of the RDRs squelched any current or future plans of the major developers releasing a Western themed game. To tough an act to follow.   Plus I wonder how popular the genre is these days with most everything else being the futuristic/apocalyptic/zombie sequel after sequel stuff.  So R* can just sit back ride things out without worrying about any competition.

Ya could be good but dunno who'd be a good choice most do bad pratices, also it'd be one of the largest purchase in history judging on the revenue they make from it. But you have a point, most of the original crew is on the way out from R* anyway. The next GTAs and RDRs (if RDR continues) may change completely down the line. Lol you never know now with how much the "pandemic" has made these companies growing, buying eachother, merging.

Imo Microsoft could be a fine company to take Rockstar over. Communication with players would be far better for sure.

Working from home is no excuse for a company that's raking in billions on MTXs and has hundreds of members of staff.

 

As people have said, FO76, Sea of Thieves and No Man's Sky (all "dead on arrival" games by the way) have been pumping out consistent and good content all the way through the current situation, R* has no excuse.

I was looking at some of the figures, at least for PC players and peak frequency using steamdb, which logs a lot of cool stuff like player count, popularity, twitch stream count, etc.

 

Obviously this doesn’t account for standalone players or versions on console, but I’d add those into my estimation. I’d also hedge my bets in saying they’re probably more populated on those platforms than PC. So with that in mind, I’d count those in generously and say maybe double at best. The player count on the PC standalone (whether accurate or not) seems to average 2.5k players with a maximum of just over 3k on good days, but this has been in sharp decline since February of this year. The average player count from then to now has dropped by more than double, so I’d suspect the same on console too. Obviously the new update will boost these figures… but by how much and for how long?

 

If I were to hazard a ballpark of the number of players *actually* playing RDO over all the platforms right now including the standalone on the R* launcher, I’d say 20k tops, which doesn’t exactly bode well for the future. 

 

I think possibly the steamdb reviews in general are skewed, due the standalone being separately recorded from the main title (the main game with online already included hasn’t really moved on the chart in terms of player count since release on PC in 2019). The figures are there though, 20k average, and taking console figures into account plus the online standalone, 40/50k maybe? 

 

When GTAV E&E comes out I’m betting a lot of players migrate back to check out the new content and graphics, which I think may hurt RDO. RDO is totally the red headed stepchild of Rockstar, I just hope future titles they create use that gorgeous environmental engine. Everything is just eye candy on a decent system.
