I'm sorry but Defense should NOT take 30 seconds to turn on.

Seriously that timer is just ridiculous, especially as the game can't save you being in it.

Defensive is helpful, but if R* were serious about it, it should be:

You're in godmode, but you cannot use your weapons against other players and they cannot harm you in any way (even down to trying to trample you with their horse).

And no, not like passive because you can still be killed in passive.

My advise is ignore the jerks. Don't play their game.

Well, that's a bit drastic.

To be fair, I've been hassled only twice since the FP update and both times I tried defending myself and left it at that. All in all this is a minor gripe I have.

@Foxwolfe & @Ghoffman9, thanks for the education. What I don't get though is that defensive should turn off when you attack someone, yeah? So at that point all the defensive perks cease.

If I land a Cattleman headshot (yeah, grampa's got some goddamn free aim going on), which I'm quite sure I did, the altercation should be dealt with, right?

Didn't see a hat fly off, which leads me to believe the nonsensical magic hat card wasn't the problem either...

Maybe I'll start carrying a slug loaded saw off, just in case. I'm no fighter, but I'm getting a little tired of being a push-over.

Defensive mode can allow a single player to kill an entire possee of knowledgeable griefers. You just have to know what youre doing.  Hip fire the shotguns and hand guns at close range, use the rolling block sniper far away.

It is a huge advantage because your damage output remains the same or possibly increases a bit...not really sure, but that doesnt really matter...its the amount of damage you can take including multiple headshots that allows you to basically never be killed without dynamite arrows.  So your output remains the same but your resistance increases drastically.

The tricky part is remaining in defensive...usually the other players will try and switch to defensive after you get them several times in a row, but they normally cant if you are constantly raising there hostility pressing charges early on before switching.  Or if they are in a posse with a moron, who cant resist attacking at every chance...which this type of player is very likely, very likely to be in a posse of griefers...90% of these players are the low/average intelligence followers that buy cod or madden every year.  if you point and laugh, they almost can never get defensive or get kicked out in 5 mins.  the only counter to defensive is dynamite arrows which are pain in the butt to craft, incendiary slugs are ok, but they are expensive and also a pain to craft.

true dedicated griefers wont mind or care about the money though so you have to realize if they are only using this ammo. Probably best to move on if youre solo.

My guess is some of you guys never met real hardcore griefers. Defensive mode is a joke to them if they got the numbers and are dedicated enough. 1 on 1 okay all day, 1v2 still nice. Now try 1v3 with couple them dudes on horseback snipin and dynamiting yer arse. Have you been outnumbered 1 to 5 ? That gets hairy usually. Defensive mode will only allow you not to be aimed at but with the right tactic it can very easily be defeated. Dont be a fool to think real pestilent assholes arent smart enough to figure out a way to kick yer arse. It works on the random noob sub level whom doesnt understand game mechanics just quite yet but not people who get a kick out of making your experience miserable and are true experts at free roam grief sorta.

You are doing it too fast or wasting lives. It will be determining the payout.

Sorry I neglected to explain that aspect. So while you are in defensive mode if someone else attacks you they will become hostile (bright red) to you yet you will remain in and retain the benefits granted by defensive mode. At this point the attacker will have to free aim to hit you and will be doing less damage, but at the same time a headshot can kill you outright (I assume, as nothing is mentioned about headshots not being one hit kills outside of slow and steady). On the other hand if you were to attack someone first it would remove you from defensive mode and both players would be on equal footing with auto aim, unless the guy you attacked was in defensive too I guess, then you'd still be free aiming but the other player would have damage reduction and the other defensive perks.

As for the cattleman headshot part, outside of if the player was in deadeye and had slow and stead up I'm not sure.

If you're attacked first, you can defend yourself without fear of Defensive deactivating. Make no mistake its still very much in effect so long as you are not the one who shot first. It only deactivates if you are the attacker, as well as your hostility getting a major increase. The best method to dispatch an attacker while in Defensive is simply equipping a shotgun and annihilate them with a good shot to the torso.

I dislike how you're taken out of defensive mode for certain things like stranger missions. Why not leave it on and have any potential opposing players have to free aim you or use some explosive weapon rather than just blasting you ez with auto aim.

Also one of the stranger missions, it spawned police right next to me and on me at 3 separate points, wtf is that bullsh*t, made me waste and extra minute or two because of that

Yes, how could you not lose with that four high!

It's lottery poker. Very rare you find a good game of poker being played 'properly'. It would help if they removed the limit, but that's not going to happen.

Yeah, I hear ya. that's what made it so annoying, this was one of those rare moments before said person joined in.

Who knows, Maybe they will increase the limit after everyone has become so rich after the collector role.. but yeah probably not.

Same. Played it 5 times. 3 of which were taking place in gaptooth ridge were the egg got collected within 30 sec every(!) time. There must be a catch to it... hm? Or are people just stupidly lucky?

and 2 were taking place in Tall Trees where the egg was never found.

I've played it twice, similar experience. Plus I got disconnected and lost my camp immediately after on both occasions. I play Trade Route and Salvage and that's it.

Chris Hansen? The hell are you doin’ here?

But yeah a complaint I have for this game is why isn’t the bandolier available as a clothing option for every jacket and not just for the bounty hunter outfit? I want to make my character look like Lemmy from Motörhead and this game is not helping by not letting me use the bandolier on the Hartley jacket? I think that’s what it’s called.

Leftover Pizza

Started the day with camp at the Scarlett Meadows. Great! No need to relog 10x. Went to do some collecting of the known spots, done so for an hour and ended in Lagras, without much motivation to ride back to my camp. At this distance, it's only a dollar anyway. So, I went to the Fast Travel post, selected "Camp" and confirmed.

Wait what?? $11??? Did I see that right? I did.... motherf*cker Cripps moved my camp to...... CHOLLA SPRINGS! Why, Rockstar?? Why???

Nothing was wrong with Blackwater, Rhodes WAS a sh*tshow though. Could be killed shortly after spawn.... then again... and again.... never getting up that hill to the train station or anywhere else as every other team is gangbanging yours

It's the Doomsday Heist method of artificially raising difficulty. Give NPC's a ridiculous amount of health, make them spawn in high numbers out of nowhere and buff their accuracy through the roof.

Why make AI smart when you can just make a high volume of super accurate bullet sponges? Amirite.

Every game I play does this, where's the innovation. I mentioned FEAR 1 once before because they actually took effort to make an Ai that is random that learns with RNG decisions, then it was scrapped after #1. Gears of War, Destiny, DOOM, FarCRY, Rage

GTA, RDR, the division, Borderlands, Resident Evil,  etc. none of them innovated still making their AI like an ancient MMO where a boss has increased health spamming attacks and damage with no thought taking the immersion away, like in RDR2 blasting someone point blank with my DoubleBarrel. They fall down get back up like nothing happened I thought right away aw no not this again...

Assassin's Creed had it a little better because if you kill a human NPC they always were usually one hit even bosses if you planned an attack but uh the Ai in general still not good. Ai is dumb as a board in most games everywhere there needs to be change it's just brutal this has been going on too long. How much better it would be if they actually upgraded AI for strategy? Not just R* seems to always be going backward more and more but of course default AI is cheaper. Gears 5 lol the AI is brain dead more than 4 even. Really sad these days but maybe these new gen games Vampire Masquerade or Cyberpunk, Death Stranding will innovate, thought that would be a priority for most but too much effort I guess.

I think the defensive mechanic is broken. When I'm attacked, half the time the game AI views me as the attacker. It's really terrible. Anyway, bugs aside, here's how I think it should work: If someone attacks you (shoots *at* you, tramples you, etc.) you should retain ALL benefits of defensive mode but auto-aim should be turned back on for you in order to strike back. Leaving you in free aim *after* you are attacked is a miserable flaw in the system imo.

An important factor is whether the attacker's dot on the map is red. After a period of time the dot reverts back to blue, and should you shoot the attacker first while its blue you will be treated as the attacker. You wait for the attacker to shoot you again first which gives you the green light again to wipe the floor with them again. Many players will shoot the person again after they reverted back to blue and get punished without realizing why. The key is letting the attacker be the first to inflict damage, very important. If they shoot at you but miss, that doesn't count to the system. While you may be stuck in free aim, you can counteract that by just equipping a shotgun and popping them up close, as its much easier to land a point blank buck shot than anything else and pretty easy to do.

I never had any issue with Defensive, most likely because I understood the game's rules.

Yes I agree that's how it works. I think it should work a different way. Plus, it's bugged. With players shooting you and not going red, or going red and turning immediately blue, or being able to kill you outright and you respawning miles away, etc., etc.

The really blatant thing is YOUR BLIP turning red if you kill the offender in self defense while in defensive. The free aim vs free aim thing is kinda the point of defensive, IMO.

The rolling block is usually a 1 hit kill with express ammo and it reloads itself.  So, yes, but really no.

It’s easy. If you’re close enough to Valentine, just go look around the area/path behind the stable/NPC campsite. The spot where there’s a bunch of herbs and berries. There’s always a few turkey’s there.
