Strange player encounter

I'm sure there was a 'share your stories' thread but can't find it. If it still exists then please feel free to move this there.

The other night we met an interesting bunch of players. Normally I’d just link to the video of it but if I do I’ll probably get a report for naming and shaming. If you want to see the video you’ll be able to find it on my channel.

I loaded into the game just outside Valentine. Removed my posse outfit and changed into something more comfortable then glugged a tonic to fill my deadeye - just in case. I could hear the sounds of horses approaching so I pull out my weapon but keep in by my side. They split up. One rides towards the post office and the other rides directly at me. The farthest one away shoot at me first, closely followed by the one approaching me. I shoot back killing one but end up getting downed. Mark spawns in at that point and we end up in a fight with the two of them. A few minutes later two others join their posse (a few of them on explosive ammo) and so we end up fighting four of them (ranks ranging from 150 to 450). We kick their butts for ten minutes or so then go to the post office.

Nothing too strange about all that. Just a standard Red Dead fight and it was fun. But the conversation we have with them was bizarre. They were calling us griefers even though I explain that I was defending myself. I then upload the video so that can take a look and it clearly shows them shooting first. Even though it’s on video for everyone to see, they were still calling us grifers. They even went so far as to say I needed their permission to share it on YouTube. They actually used to PS reporting system to report me for doing something that Sony encourages me to do – share content. They then say they are going to report me to YouTube. I said go ahead.

Fast forward a few hours and we went back into the chat to report all of their bad language (something you can actually report). If they want to play that game then we can too. They then message us saying to ‘get a grip’ for reporting them – even though they starting it all. They start a fight but we are the griefers. They report first but we need to get a grip. There are some strange and very thick people around.

Just ya typical GTA horsesh*te. Shame this game has it and R* seem to let it fester, but alas, just what anyone wanting invite only or other lobby choices have been saying is in the game. Nice to see you've finally noticed it enough to create a new B&M thread. 🤣🤠

No it's still very rare. It's even more special when it's with players so deluded. Not a B&M either. The fight was actually a lot of fun. Just what came next was strange.

Not that rare IMHO. It's the modern gaming way, start sh*t then call 'griefer' when they get what's coming to them. Very common in GTA of course and less frequent here, but nothing I've not seen often enough. Gets boring for me, and puts me off the fighting, but enjoy. No harm in a good scrap. :)

You both gave them the honest fight that they weren't looking for apparently. 😁

Players like this are a dime a dozen from what I've heard, they will start fights thinking that they are going to have the upper hand. But when the other players start giving 'em hell they have to resort to claiming griefer to save face, or that's how I see it.

For example I've been called a griefer for using my wilderness camp to fast travel away from a pair of players. They were using non stop dead eye and explosive rounds and kept tagging me from afar as I was trying to go about my way, so I lured them in close, killed them both and ran to spawn my camp. Just when I saw them both come running up to get at me again I fast traveled to another part of the map and got a really nice message from one of them. If having to resort to using an unconventional means to get away from a pair of jugheads who won't just leave me be is griefing than so be it. 😉

Also they agreed to allow their gameplay/character image to be used in screenshots and videos uploaded by the community when they chose to play. No permission is needed to share your game play video if they happen to be in it.

This is not strange.  Players will call all kinds of names especially what they are guilty of themselves. Reporting does nothing in game.  I doubt PS or Youtube will do anything.  XB does not seem to do anything if you speak in game chat, but where you can get caught is writing bad messages using the xb message system.  The game is rated for adults afterall.

This kind of behavior is exactly why I left RDO behind in the dust - we had some similar encounters - for example players who ambushed us 50 yards before we could deliver a trade wagon, blowing us and the goods to "kingdom come" .. Then we (or my sons, actually) gave them hell, kept killing them (regardless of the costs) - and it nearly always ended up with them calling us cheaters and griefers - although they started the party ..

It's sad - because it is one of the most beautiful games I ever played - but apparently also a game that brings peoples inner 🐷 out in the daylight ..

God bless all of the "clean" players - and may griefers, cheaters, and players with bad behavior's butt itch like hell, and their arms be too short ...

Happens all the time, griefers who claim you are the griefer.

I found that incendiary rounds work wonders against these people, you just have to nick them and down they go for a free kill.

After all, if they are going to complain I might as well give them something to complain about.

I even had 1 guy attack me 5 times in a row, and still called me the griefer even though he shot first, each and every time.

Fortunately for me on Playstation we have ways to get solo lobbies and keep the riff raff out. Naturally any positive co-op suffers but I do more than enough of that in GTA and other games that I enjoy a bit of alone time to immerse into my RDRO story.

Long may that remain. :)

It wasn't getting shot at or the fight that bothered me. That was actually a lot of fun (even them trying to use explosives was funny). It was just their attitude and accusations that were odd. If they had responded like normal people I'd have just replied 'gg' but they escalated it beyond belief. One of them even accused us of using glitches because one of the death scenes showed Mark's character not holding a gun. In their world that means you killed them with some magical powers maybe. We all know what the truth is and that they were embarrassed badly and didn't want to take responsibility for it.

Na, I get ya. I think everyone here does TBH. Enjoy ya scraps out there, I'll never be against that. (Just feel it should be more optional etc, but we've covered that topic plenty plus with unofficial ways to avoid it completely, my complaints are nullified for now, anyway...)

Just I hear it all the time, not just in a R* game. Take Minecraft as another example, I hear my lad saying much the same you likely did and that all was fair/they picked the fight/not cheating/glitching etc. But he gets called griefer too often, by his mates too, and I've often put a halt to him falling into their ways as I want him to be more respectable than that.

It's such an overused word that the true meaning has lost all sense these days. I've joined my lads mates plenty too (mostly to help them make a buck in GTA - they're little sh*ts of course) and the jargon they use is just so daft it's unreal. And they've been open in saying they'll report any that basically just whoop they're arses in a game, deathmatching, racing, whatever just to wind up others and what not. They don't like being challenged like an old school gamer used to relish, they can't accept a fair defeat and have all the excuses in the world, lol. Me, I'll whoop them in a race for example and they start up with allsorts, not accepting I played GTA for 20 years and GTA:O for near a decade that I'd naturally learn more than a casual kid would.

It's so crazy and bizarre. Petty and childish to take seriously IMHO.

I think this happens a lot because the people in posses don't all know each other well, or not in real life.

So you could just be standing there, with a gun ready but down at your side. Then one guy in a posse could see that and say, "HEY LADY IS ATTACKING ME!", while he

shoots at you; they all join in, of course.  From then on, that guy's story will be that you attacked first.

That is why I never run around with random posses, since I see just one person often start stuff.

But also, Valentine  ;)

Cigars and chill

You guys and gals read messages other players send you?

I don't read anything sent my way and delete immediately. So I never respond either.

I just keep playing.

Why don't you just disabled messages from people who aren't your friends then?

Yes, some people choose to read and respond to messages. Shocking, I know.

I should do that. It's not shocking to me I was just curious. I assume it's never a beneficial conversation.

It is sometimes otherwise I would never message anyone. Its nice when you have a good battle then exchange 'gg' and know there's someone human on the other end.

Damn I was expecting a creepypasta from that title. They were absolutely trolling and you took the bait.

No, they were't trolling. The actually believed what they were saying. But it's no uncommon. You get in a fight with someone and get something like 20 kills to 1 but then leave the session from boredom or something else they will claim they won because you left.

Its not uncommon at all, its a very strange thing. Quite a few times I've had a griefer attack me in Valentine (where this seems to happen the most) and after I repeatedly kill them over and over again I get bored and leave. Then get called a pussy despite having just killed them like fifteen times in a row.

But its not exclusive to Red Dead either, toxic sore losers are everywhere. My friends been called a hacker a number of times because assholes can't take losing a game of Call of Duty.

Looks sadly very common to me. Also I very much agree with all Martin said (although I didn't imagine Minecraft could be toxic too haha).

So what does Google say ?

griefer (in an online game or community) a person who harasses or deliberately provokes other players or members in order to spoil their enjoyment.

bad faith  refusal to confront facts or choices

tryhard  : a person who participates in a game or other activity with too much enthusiasm, emotion, effort, or commitment

Anyway in the end it's a waste of time interacting with this kind of dummies. But we all want to be right, right ?

quick edit, I've been called a griefer in World of Warships Legends, if you can believe it...

Like I said, everywhere! I was called out on Chivalry 2 not too long ago. Some dude tried to claim I was spamming the same attack.

So I asked why he wasn't blocking my seemingly predictable moveset. Didn't get a response.
