Does Sweet really deserves any sympathy?

Now before anyone brings up TheProfessional's video about Sweet, I understand exactly what he was saying. But does any of that really mean that we should sympathize with Sweet like the game portrays him as? Now listen, we all understand what Sweet is going through. He lost his brother and mother, and Tenpenny and Pulaski really f*cked his life up. But please keep in mind that there's a difference between having a sympathetic background and actually BEING a sympathetic person. Right after CJ bailed his ass out of prison, Sweet never even thanks him for it. Even if Sweet didn't know everything CJ did, he should know that CJ was the one who busted him out since he told him on the phone constantly that he was working on getting him out. And then he has the audacity to say CJ sounds like Big Smoke, even though CJ just wanted to get out of the hood for a better life, while Smoke stayed in the hood to get into the crack game for easy money. CJ sounds NOTHING like Big Smoke at all, and Sweet's a f*cking idiot for saying that bullsh*t! Another thing I want to point out is Sweet being a f*cking hypocrite. He got on CJ's case for not putting in work for the hood, but a mission after this, he himself didn't even try to do anything to get rid of that crack and decided to let it destroy him instead. There's no way to defend this scene at all. And after EVERTHING CJ did to make up for his past actions, Sweet STILL chews him out for it. Sweet may have a sympathetic background, but he is not a sympathetic person after all that sh*t.

Don't quote me on that sh*t, lmao. Everyone knows that Sweets a straight busta in his own ways. After the amounts of bustas that make up Sweet, he's a big ass busta for letting that base head jack MOMS blender. Should've ran after that fool man that sh*t looked brand new. His character stands out like the rest of SA's but Sweet is on the list of meh characters for various reasons beyond.

If you know a few of SA streamers on twich there's this dude named Hugo_one that did a YouTube video on Sweet entirely the exact opposite of the professionals point of veiw. I don't really think I ever felt sympathy for Sweet outside other than the two Johnson brothers losing their Mother at the hands of Smoke and Tenpenny that were targeting Sweet in the original plan for the Ballas drive-by.

CynicalMexican

No, he's a gang leader with a criminal record.

Well in retrospect, it's clear Sweet only cares about his gang. He doesn't care whether CJ established businesses here and there, just his hood life. And even then, he barely does anything for the gang lol, he makes CJ do his dirty work for him.

He doesn't deserve sympathy to begin with.

I don't understand why people say Sweet doesn't deserve sympathy. He lost his mother and brother and had a very sad background. If your background is sad, then it makes you sympathetic. So yeah. Sweet definitely deserves a lot of sympathy. Him and CJ. And Big Smoke too since he never wanted to betray CJ and Sweet.

Sweet is worthy of sympathy, but he is too stubborn. He just wants to develop his own gang and never wants to get rich like Carl.

Yes. Because just like he says, when CJ was in Liberty he was the one that always took care of the family - Kendl and his mother, while being the leader of the GSF.

Regarding his stubbornness, let's not forget he grew up and lived in the ghetto. A mentality that I probably doubt that anyone here in this thread can fully comprehend it.

And yes, you can probably say then why CJ didn't behave the same as his brother? Well, we all know he firstly ran to Liberty when Brian died because he felt guilty about it. And then he was forced out of Los Santos when CRASH took him to Angel Pine.

All of the events that leads to final mission also made CJ more conscious about the world around him, which in the other hand Sweet couldn't. Even Cesar and Kendl have changed their mentality when they ran out of LS, too.

As for Smoke and Ryder? They were never attached to the Grove, hence their betrayal, because all what they cared was success and money through drugs and other criminal activities.

Just my 2¢.

As I said before, there's a difference between having a sympathetic backstory and  being a sympathetic person. Yes, his backstory was rough, but that don't make him a sympathetic person, and he lost all sympathy by being an ungrateful hypocritical childish brat towards CJ after the latter actually helped him out. Regardless of his reasons, Sweet had no right to behave like that, nor did he have the right to claim CJ sounded like Big Smoke despite CJ wanting to move out of the hood and Smoke wanting to get into the crack game or claim that CJ was "yapping about what he done did" even though CJ never even told him what he did at all. That was uncalled for. If CJ had to take responsibility for his faults in the past, then Sweet should have done the same thing, because he's the leader of the gang and even let everything blow over without even doing anything about it for the past 5 years. It's just as much his fault.

Sweet has no character development in the game at all. That's why the rewrite version of the storyline was much better in writing Sweet's character since he actually had character development in that version, and needless to say, the Los Desperados part was satisfying as all hell. If you don't know what I'm talking about, just read this right here:

I'd tell you what happened in the Los Desperados chapter, but I don't want to spoil everything.

I sympathize more with their mom. Wishing Carl could have convinced her to leave the hood with him so that she could have lived in a safer neighborhood out of harms way from green sabors or whatever else coming along and shooting through their window, but she was likely like a lot of those older people in the hood who refuse to leave their homes no matter what.

They're too stubborn and so they trust in god and live the remainder of their lives right there. Which is more than likely where Sweet got that Attitude from too. He's the oldest so he experienced more life in that area than CJ. It's all he knows, and all he wants to know because he's never taught or given any reason to leave that area behind. Plus it probably feels good to him to be a respected OG rather than just become a regular person some place else.

Introduction movie shows, that after Brian died, Sweet lost motivation in keeping gang strength on streets. Smoke at first, suggest Sweet to enter crack business, so GSF would have enough money and rep on streets and even it would weaken both Ballas and Vagos influence. As Smoke failed with convincing Sweet, he worked secretly with Ballas and Tenpenny provided security, money and connections for Smoke to flood LS with drugs and be untouchable. If hired Ballas actually killed Sweet as planned, then Smoke would be put in charge of GSF.

I can kind of see where Sweet's coming from. He's upset that his family all seem to be turning their backs on their roots, and not doing a thing to stop the place they were born and raised in from being taking over by drug dealers, crack addicts, and rival gangs. Then again, they didn't choose to leave Los Santos in the first place, and Sweet doesn't seem to care about all the crazy stuff CJ was forced into while Sweet was locked up.

Also, keep in mind that Sweet probably doesn't even know that CJ is the one who got him released, since CJ had to do a lot of top secret government wetwork to make that happen. I doubt he's even allowed to tell Sweet that he's the one who got him released.

He's much like someone with a mental or personality disorder. Naturally as a human you fell compassion towards him and want his to lead a pleasant and fulfilling life, but you just want him to stay the f away from you and never encounter him in your life.

Let him be happy somewhere else.

Sweet is lawful and shows some gratefulness for CJ's services to the gang at some moments without forgetting he personnally takes part to the action at some times so he deserves a bit of sympathy.

I don't think it's the fact that they turned their backs on their roots that made him upset it's the mindset that lead to it. The "American" mind set. Sweet doesn't want fame or even money he wants the people he grew up with, the Grove Street Family, *his* family to be safe. He cares about them and he wants them to care too. I believe sweet subscribes to the logic that family is all that matters, to him life is about spending time with the people you care about and enjoying what you have. Not chasing after frivolous things like bigger houses, celebrity status, all the things that America is known for and the GTA games base their themes around.

This mind set would also explain why he is dissatisfied with CJ's accomplishments. Not only do they have nothing to do with what Sweet values but CJ adamantly claims that he is the sole person who achieved them while. To Sweet, CJ  got his social skills, finesse, quick wit, nearly EVERYTHING from the Hood and CJ acts like he wants to erase any of that environments impact from his story; he doesn't even recognize the fact that that the Hood played a role in it going so far as saying the hood did literally nothing for him.

I can't say whether or not that mindset is correct but I do believe that it is the core question behind "was sweet right/wrong?" because you answer depends on how you feel about that sort of life logic.

I think he does. His world view is limited to just Grove Street unlike CJ and the rest of the crew that venture off further into the world. Also if you felt one of your siblings left your other brother to die and then bailed on the family during their time of need, you might be a bit bitter too.

Do I agree with him? Definitely not. But he does have my sympathy. He’s much more small minded and simple compared to CJ and Kendl. Just who he is.
