Thorne23
Hello there. I understand that creating this topic now is far-fetched, as SA is almost 20 years old, however, it still brings me joy, and I've been trying to experiment with creating my own mods and textures for it, but nothing seems to work. (I use the Steam version of SA) I'm trying to retexture the peds: lapdm1, sfpd1, lvpd1, tenpen, pulaski, and hern. For reference those models are: Motorcycle Police Officer SF Police Officer LV Police Officer Tenpenny Pulaski and Hernandez I've followed all tutorials I could find regarding retexturing and replacing existing textures with my own. I've extracted both TXD and DFF via TXD Workshop, edited the TXD to my liking, confirmed compatibility via DFF viewer, and used Replace in the IMGTool. But the game crashes when I try to spawn an edited ped or choose the edited skins in the skin selector. Yes, I've tried replacing existing textures with both TGA and BMP. Any experienced texturers/modders who can help me with this? FYI, I have several CLEO mods and other skin mods already, all of which work fine before anyone wonders if any mods are causing crashes. Lioshenka
I am fairly sure that messing up the texture won't crash the game? Someone may correct me. If you mess up a texture, the model will just appear white in game. Can you upload your edited texture here, and give me the txd name? I'll try and add it to my game to see what happens. Quote me, or I won't get a notification. Edited June 25, 2021 by Lioshenka

LUISDooM
Maybe TXD Workshop is saving the TXD to another game version/format (like GTA III or VC) or even messing the files up. You can try Magic TXD to edit the TXD files and see if it makes any difference.
Thorne23
**UPDATE** I've managed to work round the crashing issue, but the models still appear white. Any additional help? I don't see how I could've messed up on the initial edits unless I'm missing some key knowledge on texture edits.
LUISDooM
Have you replaced the original textures keeping the exact texture name? Also I don't know if it counts, have you set the texture compression after importing? DXT1 is the best for non-alpha textures. And again, I suggest you to use Magic TXD to work with TXDs, it's more intuitive and works overall better than TXD Workshop. After that I edit on paint.net for convenience. Then I open that on MagicTXD and save as a TGA, then replace the original with the edit via IMGTool. I'm not sure if the name is affecting it or not. Any advice or corrections would be appreciated.

Try this: -Extract the TXD from the IMG -Open it with Magic TXD and replace the original texture keeping the exact same name, set the texture compression to DXT1 and save the TXD. -Import the new TXD file into the IMG IMG editors like Spark or Crazy IMG Editor can help you to extract/import files into IMG files. I tried doing this for lapdm1 just now. He's still white. I think the problem is on my end though because I replaced the original with the edit in TXD WS so now I can't extract the original to try again. The replacement icon changed from the edit texture to a Magic TXD icon though as it showed in a video so I'm thinking the TXD WS replacement thing is the only problem. Don't know how to revert it though.

At this point I'm gonna settle with the fact that my SA has a fully white cop driving around. I can't think of any other ways to test and fix this. LUISDooM
Delete the IMG file and check/fix/redownload the games files with steam and then try again. Just remember to make backups next time Remember, when modding games, sometimes you'll find lots of discouraging issues like this one. You just have to keep trying! LeatherJacketSoldier
My advice, use IMG Tool 2.0 for extracting and replacing from .img files (don't forget to rebuild the archive after replacing all you need and before running the game), and Magic TXD like the rest told you to work with .txd files. IMG Tool 2.0 never failed me. And always export images from a .txd in either .png or .tga format, since they're the only formats that support transparencies. I don't know about .tga, but .png can be edited in Paint 3D in order to keep transparencies (if you don't have transparencies, Paint works pretty fine). If you lack of Paint 3D (I'm running an outdated version of Windows 10 that doesn't allow me to install it, because the updated version just sucks and slows down my PC AF), then start looking for another program. So either a buggy editor, wrong type of compression, or name mismatch. Could also be a wrong colour compression from your graphics package, but then the models aren't usually white, just with messed up colours. PNG file format usually works fine, whereas I had problems with BMPs and TGAs. You can try and upload your BMP file here: https://imgbb.com/ and post the link in this thread for one of us to try.
