Pros and cons of each protagonist (potential spoilers)

Basically what we like and don't like about the protagonists. I'm only sticking with the ones I played through (III, Vice City, V)

 

 

Claude

 

Pro: A silent protagonist done right. The most vicious and cold-blooded character in GTA.

 

Con: Can come off as a bit too cold-blooded for some. Trevor may be a momma's boy, but Claude is the type to willingly kill his mother if told.

 

 

Tommy Vercetti

 

Pro: Badass personality and voice-acting.

 

Con: Can come off as an asshole at times. Although I do kind of understand why he's so bitter considering how he had 15 years of his life wasted.

 

 

Michael de Santa

 

Pro: A man with meaningful intentions.

 

Con: Can still be painfully hypocritical at times. I get why people would pick option B.

 

 

Franklin Clinton

 

Pro: A chill guy. I like him out of all the three in V.

 

Con: Another unfortunate case of "black best friend" syndrome. It'd be nice if we see more conflict with him and the other protagonists, such as how despite going from rags to riches, he still blames Michael for bringing him to a riskier life of crime.

 

 

Trevor Philips

 

Pro: Witty humor

 

Con: Way too much of a psycho. I get why people would pick option A.

 

 

 

So what are your thoughts? What are some other pros and cons of the protagonists could you think of?

Claude
+: Efficient
-: Robotic

Tommy Vercetti
+: Badass
-: Kinda one-dimensional

Carl Johnson
+: Loyal to his homies
-: Moments of inconsistency (scared of Catalina, but later buries a construction worker alive)

Niko Bellic
+: Caring
-: A bit hypocritical (charges money to kill people, like the "special someone" who betrayed him)

Johnny Klebitz
+: Principled
-: Greed (rips off his contact and takes his money)

Luis Lopez:
+: Loyal
-: Too much of a womanizer

Franklin Clinton:
+: Level-headed
-: Lacking in character development

Michael Townley
+: Good intentions to keep his family safe
-: Traitorous

Trevor Philips
+: Some funny moments
-: Some too cringey moments IMO

Johnny Klebitz

 

+ Is circumcised 

- Is a drug addict waster 

[H-G]

Claude:

 

+: Easily the most perfect, blank-slate and mysterious assassin with a meaningful motive in the storyline.

-: Becomes a betrayer like Catalina by the end of the game. Does not have any dialogues to speak but it's fine.

 

Tommy:

 

+: Rightfully rips off his own boss after losing 15 years of his life in prison at the age of 20.

-: Doesn't do any actual business dealing in the game but that's just gameplay mechanics.

 

CJ:

 

+: Looks after his family. Is comfortably customizable. Knows how to tackle sticky situations and manipulate big bad guys.

-: Does too much ridiculous stuff throughout the storyline.

 

Mike:

 

+: Hell-bent on searching for his best friend's killer.

-: Talks too much. In some missions, he's even talking to himself! Can you believe that?

 

Toni:

 

+: Brimming with loyalty. Has a nice assortment of both equally good-looking and ridiculous-looking outfits.

-: Has a lot of crazy moments like literally butchering Giovanni Casa, blowing up Fort Staunton etc. and has nothing else to do other than running around for Salvatore.

 

Vic:

 

+: Pretty interesting character. Kinda like a 3D-era version of Niko Bellic, except it's a BETA test of him and Vic is free of any hypocrisy.

-: I don't think there are any cons?

 

Niko:

 

+: Doesn't have to kill just about everyone.

-: Is a hypocrite (killing people for money just like Darko), but then he goes on to blame Darko for it.

 

Johnny:

 

+: Somewhat a man of honor.

-: Got himself messed up after TLaD and in V. Stole Ray's money instead of simply waiting to get paid, which only resulted in his best friend Jim getting killed.

 

Luis:

 

+: Loyal. Essentially Toni Cipriani 2.0 in that aspect and seems kinda "cool"-ish.

-: Keeps having hallucinations that every single girl he meets is his wife. It's like R* is trying to say that Luis is NOT Gay Tony.

 

Huang:

 

+: Never played CTW so IDK.

-: Ditto.

 

Micheal:

 

+: Cares about his family and does whatever he can to protect them.

-: Incredibly treacherous and betrays Trevor to save his family who all later turn on him.

 

Franklin:

 

+: Voiced by Shawn Fonteno?

-: Way too underdeveloped.

 

Trevor:

 

+: A brilliant voice. Steven Ogg did some excellent voice work right there.

-: Killed Johnny off.

Claude:

+ Extremely serious and cold, a stone cold killa.

- Barely any charisma.

 

Thomas "Tommy" Vercetti:
 

+ Has a perfect balance between brain and muscle, showing himself as one of the few intelligent people in the game.

- Poorly developed backstory.

 

Carl "CJ" Jonhson:

+ The most charismatic protagonist that has ever existed, no one can hate him because he's just so funny but cool at the same time.

- Has a lot of problems with dealing with personal problems, doing things that only end up making everything worse.

 

Antonio "Toni" Ciprianni:

+ The perfect meaning of the word "loyalty", he's truly a man of words.

- GTA Liberty City Stories storymode doesn't help him, perhaps there are a lot of things about Toni we haven't realized because of the poor story.

 

Victor Vance:

 

+ One of the few GTA protagonists that feels more like an antihero rather than a criminal, he's like CJ but more human.

- He appears on a GTA game, which is kinda odd because he always says "I don't want to be a criminal" but then you can start WWIII on freeroam.

 

Nikolai "Niko" Bellic:

+ Another antihero, but unlike Vic, Niko's crimes can actually be understood. He's very charismatic and you get to empathise with him.

- He could have been far better if Rockstar wanted to, but a lot of things that would improve Niko's character were either cut or never considered at all.

 

Jonathan "Johnny" Klebitz:

+ By far the character with the most emotive story, you really get to feel everything Johnny feels.

- GTA V ruined everything stablished for Johnny, making him a drug addict depressed biker.

 

Luis Fernando Lopez:

 

+ Another extremely loyal character, but unlike Toni, Luis is actually extremely cool and it's impossible to hate him.

- Outside of his expansion, Luis looks more like a minor antagonist, which makes your perception on him be different.

 

Franklin Clinton:

+ Absolutely nothing, he's a CJ but less loyal who only cares about money.

- Everything, the worst 3D GTA games protagonist.

 

Michael Townley "De Santa":

+ The perfect representation of a person who tries to do the best for his loved ones, and the best GTA V protagonist.

- Being on a GTA game makes it so that his story of selling out his friends only turns him into the game's traitor while the story tries to justify it.

 

Trevor Philips:

 

+ An extremely funny and charismatic character, it represents so well the type of players who just want to cause rampages on freeroam.

- His actions are extremely questionable from an storymode point of view, which makes him look like he's only a liability for the characters.

[Cutter De Blanc]

Claude:

+A blank slate allowing the player to imagine him as whatever kinda person they want to imagine him as

-No real personality of his own

Tommy Vercetti:

+Total badass, runs Vice City

-Some aspects of him seem very ripped off from Tony Montana

CJ:

+Fun guy, causing chaos with him always a blast

-Can be kinda dumb at times

Toni Cipriani:

+Only real mafioso GTA protagonist, looks great in a track suit or a business suit

-Not a very memorable character,  his story is more Salvatore Leone's story

Victor Vance:

+Some of the best 3D era gameplay

-Doesn't like committing crimes, total wet blanket

Niko Bellic:

+Everybody loves Niko

-Random rampages seem a bit out of character for him

Johnny Klebbitz:

+Tough biker with a cool biker gang he commands

-His life is depressing as hell

Luis Lopez:

+Laid back dude, some of the best gameplay in the HD era

-Complete f*cking douchebag

Franklin Clinton:

+Easy enough to relate to, classic rags to riches story

-Kind of a boring guy

Michael De Santa/Townley:

+Has an interesting story

-Not very fun to freeroam as, kind of seems like more of a white collar criminal

Trevor Phillips:

+Chaos personified, fun as hell to freeroam with

-A very off-putting personality causes polarizing opinions on him
