GTA Online for PS3/Xbox 360 shutting down December 16th, 2021

It's most likely dying due to them needing to support it in SO many places. The final version(XBX/PS5/PC) will likely last as long as RDR and GTA IV's servers, LG is just not that profitable as all the big ticket items that get sharkcards are on CG/NG.

I tried PS4 online, and I didn't think much of it. So I cancelled the subscription. I thought this would be available for a few more years. I first played only two and a half years back on the PS3. And since then I was the first time around June 2019, and I only registered again last year in October.

 

PS3 is great for those who just want some online game play.

Solo? Single player or online? There is no online beyond the switched off.

 

It gave the PS3 use with this game being online.

R* needs to enable a merge feature for our last gen characters. Add our 360/PS3 characters to our current gen profile as third or fourth characters. But NO MONEY. Or maybe just $10 Million or so in cash. As a gesture of good faith to all of those last gen players (like me) that bought a few shark cards just to get started. No modded outfits, snacks or armor get transferred. And they all get a starting rank of 500 or less depending what the character's actual rank is.

At the end of the day, it’s not a surprise that rockstar doesn’t give a f*ck. I understand that this is something that had to happen eventually. No issue with that. But they way they treat their legacy is garbage.

I'm surprised that it took them this long to do it. The next gen systems gives them the perfect cop-out to finally shutting down the old systems. I'm sure that they will eventually do what they did when GTA5 was released on the XBox One, they'll try to entice all GTA players to roll over to the newest systems by stopping the "new DLC support" on the current systems.

From a development standpoint that makes complete sense too, why support three platform types at once, where one (the oldest) is on a super unfriendly architecture? Shut down the actual legacy 15 year old platforms, stop supporting the older 8 year old platforms that are already running slow, and entice players into the new platforms, if they can get access to them. I feel like a lot of programmers (and not only) will be thankful once they can stop supporting the PS4 and Xbox One tbh lol, the problem is console availability - it's just personal speculation but there's a chance PS4 and One players could get an extra DLC or so, so more people are able to get PS5's and Xbox Series' with all the issues going on.

I wonder if the shut down will require a title update? They could update the language files to least state it has been shut down. I was thinking maybe they would add the online vehicles into the single player but I don't see that happening tbh, it would be a huge waste of time.

Shutting down a service for a multiplayer game usually don’t require an update. All it would have to say is give the user an error message saying they can’t connect to the services. Unless rockstar wants to fully disable it

For many like myself, they stick to it simply because there isn't a subscription. Will Sony end the PS store subscription because PS5 is out. I'd like to think so, perhaps bring down to $2 or £2 a month.

I don't see how that would be an argument for us to stop playing on current and next gen, this game will still go for a lot of years on both of them before the servers are ever shutdown.

 

Like yeah, I dumped thousand of hours into my online characters and millions of fake money on the game, so what? The only real money R* has gotten from me was when I paid for the game again on current gen and I got my money's worth years ago.

 

Folks on last gen shouldn't be spending any money on shark cards though...Though I suspect nobody, or at least not relevant number of players is doing that anyway.

 

If there's anyone there still spending money in this game...I cant help but feel sorry for them.

I highly doubt there’s any cash card sales, what is it like $100 for 8mil or buy a modded acct for $5 with billions.   There’s a reason they’re shutting it down and it’s not lack of players.

I may go back into my old 360 save and have a look around /take pics before it shuts down. Check out the old Casino location, and see what cars were left in my garages before I hopped over to XBone in 2014.

Anyone who still has the consoles & the game, definitely take pics as we might be planning on doing a Snap highlight of the old times when we're closer to the shutdown date, for nostalgia's sake   We might make a topic closer to that time too so everyone can deposit their snap memories there and have them shown on our GTANet news site.

I somehow managed to completely miss the news but it seems that Rockstar ended Snapmatic support for PS3 and Xbox 360 in March last year. I only noticed because this week I've been playing GTA V on PS3 again and realised it's no longer possible to save snapmatics.

 

I have plenty of snaps saved from the early days of GTA Online that I uploaded to my Imgur account back then, but I have a feeling there were many more on Social Club that I never downloaded and have now been lost entirely and that sucks. I don't have many from other platforms but this is probably a good indication that I should save them while I remember

I like this idea! Too bad my 360 died in 2016. Curious to see what kind of photos might come from this.

We thought of doing it when R* announced the shutdown, but maybe nearer to the actual shutdown date would be better for some extra nostalgia of the beginning times of GTA Online. We'll definitely be digging around these forums as well for any surviving pictures in the older topics.

Submitted a request to Rockstar feedback to enable a database merge option. To allow the characters from last gen to be merged with your current account as third and fourth player characters. WITHOUT any transferred money or modded items and a maximum rank of 120.

It's interesting to me that Rockstar and Take-Two, who both released the most profitable piece of media in the history of entertainment, can't be bothered to keep a few servers online for Last Gen. Even with all the money they get from their sh*tty Shark Cards, or sales of the game itself, this wasn't enough to keep Online from going into history for Last Gen consoles. Too greedy?

 

Hey, you know what, this case really shows that all that money you put into microtransactions and what have you don't guarantee the game stays up, as your usual videogame pundit would have you believe. Might wanna haunt them with GTA Online everytime they open their mouths about how in-app purchases is the lifeblood of an online game that you paid $60 for.

 

But it gets better:

• they still sell shark cards until september even when announcing the game shuts down december, almost like they don't really give a f*ck about us because we're cash cows to them
• they don't even offer you a way to migrate to Current Gen, so you will end up rebuying all the stuff you had if you want to catch up on later Gens.
• this happens to the PS3/X360. What will happen in a few years of the PS4/X1? Is it even worth investing in their sh*tty game if not even "it's made by T2 and R*" a guarantee it stays online?
• oh and they definitely don't release the server software for the PS3/X360, they'd rather the game stop existing than let fans keep a piece of history alive (for free and at a loss to the fans)

Just goes to show how Rockstar and Take-Two really are scumbags. Maybe it was a mistake to keep supporting them and their crap across the years.

It would be extremely simple for R* to create a migration path for the x360/ps3 accounts. All they would need to make are coding to remove the modded stuff they don't like. For example:

IF POCKETCASH > 1000000 THEN SET POCKETCASH = 1000000

These consoles are 15 years old and there probably are barely any players with them compared to the rest of the platforms nowadays. You see game companies shutting down servers for old games/old platforms quite often, I still don't understand the shock, or even any justification for these to stay up.

What about the modded levels? Even if you have no intention to cheat people mess with your account, I had played GTAO only a few days until somebody modded me to level 5000. There is no reason to allow character transfer from 360 to current gen.

The shock is obvious:

• game that made a hella too much money and still does
• in a few years the PS4/X1 versions will obviously end up in the same place in this stupid vicious cycle
• as usual, talented developers would rather see their work completely shut down than to let fans handle it

I've been told all the time that microtransactions are needed to keep games alive and online. That raising game prices pay employees better and results in better quality games. The game industry never owns up to the stuff they spit out constantly. You say the consoles are 15 years old, but the PS4 will eventually be 15 years old itself and so would the PS5. Your downplaying of the shutdown does not negate any of the reasons I stated above.

 

There is no one solid reason why I can still find online servers up and running for Medal of Honor Allied Assault (2004 game), or Worms Armageddon (1999 game), but not GTA V (2013 game). Other than maybe industry greed, maybe.

 

See, what this is really about is that they're no longer being treated as games. They're just disposable live services. But GTA is special. It's the most successful one IMO. So imagine when GTA itself is not exempt from the "disposable" part. I do have a nagging feeling we're not supposed to put any blind faith in the AAA industry in any of its parts.

The old gen was filled with cheaters which I assume was a factor that was taken into consideration prior to this decision. I believe the cheating levels were even worse than on PC. As I believe the old gen version is outdated enough at the point where a cheater could correct your rank and cash.

 

The last-gen consoles are yet to be jailbroken to let cheaters wreck havoc like that. So, as long as it stays that way, I think it would survive a bit longer than last-gen.
