GTA Online for PS3/Xbox 360 shutting down December 16th, 2021

Yeah that's a thing old grizzled mmorpg vets get wised up to pretty quick. Eventually the server goes *pop* or your interest in the game goes *pop*, or life stuff happens. And you need to reconcile all that passion, energy, time, effort and $$$ just...disappears with the flip of a switch. It's harsh, but eventually it will happen to everyone who games. Glad I got over that mental hurdle years ago. I dive deep in to lots of sandbox games, crafting games, etc. I no longer get too choked up when I drift away or servers disappear or games shut down etc. I remember the good times, the experiences, but usually by the time the end comes I'm at a stage where 'there's no going back'.   

 

Like you said, we have no choice but to just move on...

This is a bit of a shame to see as I do have fond memories of playing GTA:O on the Xbox 360 but as always, all good things must come to an end.

So, took a few images to compare with Current Gen and good lord above, I hadn't laid eyes on my first-gen version of my character since Nov 2014, turns out a transfer to Enhanced Edition turned him from a crack-addled maniac (look at those f*ckin' eyes behind those sunglasses in the 360 pic) to pale-face shyboi. I made sure that both Player Moods were set to Normal.

 

 

These two are from the exact same location with the original Lost MC Daemon that could only be stolen and given a Tracker & Insurance, and was my first ever and favourite vehicle, compared with the Bikers version of the Daemon taken at the exact same time of day, the only major difference is the weather being overcast in 360 and clear in the ONE.

Good times indeed throughout 2013, 2014 and 2015. I'm sure this is a logical decision, R* knows how many people are still playing the PS3/360 versions, so it ain't worth keeping those servers anymore. Same with Max Payne 3 and LA Noire.

well it is sad to see it go. i still have good memories playing those early days. i only had the ps3 version for about a year. then i got the ps4 in october 2014. and i never looked back. but its a weird feeling. even though it wont affect me. it feels like a tiny part of my past is going away. although i find it odd that they are doing this to gta 5. and gta 4 and red dead redemptions multiplayer will still be active. although i do hope that them ending last gen will mean they are moving on to new games. i know they are really focused on the gta 5 enhanced port. but i really hope we can get a new game soon. i wish they could just let go of gta online entirely. but we know that wont happen for a very long time. im sure saying this in the gta online section will upset people. but this game is just stale and with all the toxic vehicles and features they added. its time for a new gta and new games.

Actually I’m not too surprised, both consoles have to be a mod fest mess to try to clean up and it’s highly doubtful the cash card sales even exist there anyway.  Sad day indeed for the memories but most players now never played on the old gen anyways, it’s still kinda cool to go back if you can just to see what’s not there.

Yup can’t believe these rockstar community twitter account who do nothing but complain whatever rockstar does. I bet rockstar would announce single player dlc and they will still complain. I will say I’m shocked rockstar didn’t pull the plug earlier on these hardware

This was bound to happen.

I have a PS4 set up in my lounge, the PS3 is in my bedroom and is primarily used for Netflix/Prime and Blu Ray movies in bed but this is the thing. I went to use the BBC iPlayer on the PS3 not too long ago and was greeted by a message saying the app is no longer supported on the system. 

That's when it hit me that this technology is obsolete, Sony even tried shutting down the PS Store for the console but reversed this decision amid feedback. 

The system has been discontinued since 2016 and with consoles like the PS5 + X/S it was only going to be a matter of time before 'end of life' would be announced. 

This happens in all forms of technology as just the other day Microsoft announced they were going to end support for Windows 10 in 2025 (the OS itself came out in 2015). Mobile phones, TV's, PC's all go through this 'end of life' stage. Technology is only ever going to improve and get better and people need to realise that.

 

On the other hand, I think about Shark cards, this is another reason why I don't buy Shark cards (CP being the main reason), because eventually, at some point the online service will shut down and you will have nothing to show for your money. 

Looking online, through eBay etc you can get a PS4/Xbox One relatively cheap these days and for those still not making the transition, now is the time to think about upgrading.

Still play Online on my old good 360 sometimes. The reason is just 'clean' online v1.29 without flying cars, opressors and such crap.

Sad that it will be gone forever. I expected server closures at least after 10 years after original release (in 2023) but they managed to do this earlier.

 

Ok well, I have 6 months to do all online achievements that I have still locked. The worst thing is huge amount of discontinued achievements that will appear in this game after Dec 16th.

Im a bit confuse on this. So there is no character transfer on PS3 to PS4 or 5,but my question is can u transfer the ps4 character to ps5 when E&E comes out?

Of course you can, they would be crazy to not allow character transfer, because otherwise i doubt a lot of players would buy again to start from scratch. Just be aware of the time limit to transfer character/s if you don't own ps5 yet, it could be couple of months or even more than a year.

With all due respect, maybe you and I can get a next gen console within a month's wages, but ask yourself this - do you think that the entire community from across and around the world can also afford that? 

What about the folks on developing countries, and those from poverty stricken areas?

What about the ones who can't move across platforms cos of this, or their folks unable to afford it, have you ever thought of it from different perspective?
What about this being their only livelihood or the escape they have from their real life? 

You do realize as a member of the wider gaming community, it's about seeing the bigger picture? 

Rockstar has made enough money overall to keep the server's open on Last Gen as they do not receive any updates whatsoever and it's not like they would be bankrupt be keeping it running - believe me, running servers that requires no updates, isn't going to rinse them. 

 

The last gen consoles/game for GTA paved the path to what it is now for the next gen GTA - so yeah.

I'll be honest I'm a bit sad over this, so many memories from day one on the 360 version. A lot of my time was spent picking up randoms and giving them rides. I became friends with a lot of them too, especially one girl in particular whose crew I joined and played with the most. We would message each other over Skype (before Discord was a thing) and would get into sessions together every now and then. She moved around a lot so sometimes she'd make a new account and I'd add her. I eventually lost contact with her I don't know what happened to her. She just stopped going online one day. Her name was Selene...

Good lord…remember the comments under Rockstar articles when they announced no further DLC/updates for ps3/x360? 
 

I could only imagine the wide range of anger and vitriol if R* still allowed comments under their articles.

 

Kind of sad realizing how much time and enjoyment a lot of us had during the OG GTA:O days. Cheers to the memories and pour one out for those less fortunate that only have the PS3/X360 to enjoy Online with.

Thanks for the memories old, old gen! I only got the PS4 because they stopped updating the game on the PS3 - I believe after ill gotten gains was the last? Anyway, some great early days memories.

At least for those of us that still have the old consoles we can log on and empty those bank accounts that have been sitting there dormant for years, maybe even get a kick out of some of the cars we sold long ago after the character transfer, they’re still there in all those 10 car garages.  As I stated above I still have fun logging in to see what’s not there and what we were back then.

For maybe a brief moment in time, gta5 will have servers open for SEVEN versions of the game. What really bothers me however, is that there is now a huge portion of the game locked away forever. The PS3 Kuruma will simply not exist.

 

Unless you can use a mod menu on single player? Idk

Whats the difference between the ps3 kuruma?

I think its pretty sh*tty of rockstar. Gta iv and rdr is still up and running. Months ago i turned my ps3 on to have another playthrough of gta iv and stumbled upon gtao and its actually still good. I know theres modders on there but i havent ran into any yet, but its nice to play with no futuristic weapons. I originally loved gtao because i felt like a up and coming gangster. With my low level house and uzi and handguns. Drive bys with friends were fun too, i had alot of fun. I cant play gtao for too long now because of the flying missle launchers. 1v1s were so much better on old gen

Sooner or later online games shut down, gta online 1.0 had its hay day now they want to put there resources toward gta online 2.0.

Last I remember, the windows are different. But my point is, if you're playing gta5 on the PS3 there will be cars, clothes, missions almost an entire world that's inaccessible.

They probably do - but you are missing the point highlighted - for some it could be the only escape they have from everything else. 
Regardless, I choose not to argue about this to prove a point, and of course, what's to happen will do, regardless of a petition or not - that's how the world turns.

I'll be watching what they do regarding the game save, if they dump a patch on the game so you can play your character and stuff offline then all good. If they don't it shows you what they will do with the ps4/ps5/pc versions in the future and in that case you might want to think twice about continuing to play the game.
