GTA Online for PS3/Xbox 360 shutting down December 16th, 2021

It's not hard to explain why. MP3 and GTA Online use actual servers to keep track of player progress in multiplayer, and the same happens for L.A. Noire's single player. As far as I remember, GTA IV's multiplayer doesn't rely on progress.

Two names I never thought I would write down again. frokost400, my PS3 name, was the name I used for my first time playing GTA Online, and TornadoTurret was my Social Club name. 

I was one of the lucky ones who got GTA V a day before the 17th of September in 2013. It was also the day my bicycle got stolen, but heck, why did that matter? I had a copy of GTA V! I remember trying to get used to the "new" controls (called "Advanced Controls" in GTA IV), and man what a difference it was. on launch day of GTA Online, October 1st, I created my character, and got the Sabre Turbo as my first vehicle ever, pursuing my grind for the legendary Z-Type.

The amount of friends I've made along the way is almost uncountable, despite only being on that platform for 1.5 years before I jumped to PS4. I still have contact to some of my old friends, but unfortunately, some have left and passed away too. 

GTA Online on PS3 changed my life - no, literally! I somehow met my first love on there (thanks to a $9000 Bounty I got from stealing a Dock Tug, chances eh?), and it was her family that introduced me to my field of profession.

I am now a Journeyman-to-be, taking my final exam next week, ending a 4 year long specialized education, now pursuing a job in a big toy company.

We are not together anymore, but we keep close contact.

 

Eight years, two months and sixteen days. It has had a good run. 

Thank you for shaping me as a person. Words cannot describe how much of an emotional rollercoaster this is for me.

I would like to jump on my PS3 account one last time before they shut it down completely.

Lol, imagine them allowing transfers of all the hacked accounts on PS3 and Xbox 360 that must have reached the max 32-bit signed integer (2147483647) in money by now.

 

Of course they wouldn't enable transfers again just because they're shutting down such an old version of the game, especially with reports that nowadays it's just rife with hackers.

So if any of you guys are still playing GTA Online on those old consoles, now would be a good time to upgrade to PS4/PS5 or Xbox One/Xbox Series X & S, which also includes those Social Club returning player bonuses (race cars, weapons, etc.).

purely a financial decision. 

hell even the gta 4 servers are still up but they were in basic forms so no cost i would imagine . 

same will eventually happen with x box one ps4 down the line certain the summer update will be the last for current gen. 

a shame though people probably still play online

The money spent maintaining those old services is definitely greater than what the shark cards sales from last-gen can account for by a large extent. It was a long time coming to be fair.

If they want to shutdown the game on December 16th then they should have shutdown Shark card sales on that platform today after they made the announcement.

 

If they cared about work ethic, that is.

 

I do wonder if the last gen game will atleast get a splash warning on the loading screen of the day it's being shutdown, so R* can at least say they made an effort to announce to those on the platform what's gonna happen(not everyone playing there is following them on social medias or and anyone other GTA related pages).

I pretty much expected this would come when the new versions appear, they'd be supporting it on a LOT of platforms.

 

Honestly if you didn't move on sorry to say but it's your own fault. Xbox Ones aren't that expensive, especially second hand. Been that way since the better Xbox One's were released

I hope they keep the transfer to NG open longer for Xbox One and PS4 user's than they did with LG since modders aren't around, along with the console shortage

It was fun for my first dip into onli e gaming, had a real blast with it and still here and looking forward at what's to come, albeit with a little caution, lol. 

 

Shame @Classique has to retire the returning player service though.

First few days were so bad I was forced to recreate my character and start again at least 3 or 4 times as all of my stuff kept getting deleted.
I used to hide my cars in bushes so no one could steal them!

I cracked open the time capsule and went back to 17th November 2014, right where I left my character on last-gen... after of course manually downloading the Festive Surprise 2014, Heists, Ill-Gotten Gains 1 & 2 updates manually, one at a time from the store menu. Yeah, that was a thing on First-Gen, they didn't just apply the updates automatically.

 

Stuck to an Invite Only lobby to avoid any modding insanity, I finally realised I wasn't crazy, there really was a time when you could apply a Crew Emblem to a T-Shirt then a jacket over said T-shirt without the emblem being removed from the T-shirt. And this USED to be a thing on Current-Gen when it initially launched, because I only wore a T-Shirt with any jacket on First-Gen, and lo-and behold it could still be done with the release of Ill-Gotten Gains 2. Cool to see that they implemented Aim + Fire and Allow Movement When Zoomed to previous gen versions of the game, although you do need to turn them on first. I am tempted to do the Heists for "the first time" with only what was avaliable to us in 2015, but, I don't wanna have my profile ruined by some random who sees me where I was exactly 700 ranks ago at Rank 98 and thinks; m'yeah I'll just boost this guy to 8000 and give him a $2b.

 

Gonna work on some screenshots so I can compare and contrast my character with his modern counterpart.

I don't know about that for sure though, as it doesn't require a GTA Online character to activate the RPB content.

 

But the question is rather what would happen to the RPB content if they disable that too. Would it be unlocked for everyone? Or super exclusive content? No one really knows yet, but I'll be doing some tests on December 17th to be certain

Oh, of course, you only need do the story tutorial/1st mission to get it set up, I forgot that part, lol.

 

But yeah, it'll be interesting to learn what's to come with the re-release etc. Hopefully good times ahead!

I got a lot of mixed feelings when I read that... First nostalgia of course, I played GTA Online with money from my dad on 360 in October, when nothing worked and I had to make my character 2 times, then I got 500K for the troubles and I bought an High end apartment with it. I stopped playing around 2015 and then made a Character transfer to XB1 (Which I regret cause I don't play on that platform anymore) But from time to time I used to log in in my old 360 to look my character (which sometimes had a dude's face ._.) and drive in my Ruiner (My very first stolen vehicle). Now that I live alone, and can play the game on PC (Which I bought with my own money), I had to start from scratch in 2016, so I can't wait to see what's coming. It sure has been a long journey, ans this event is the end of an era. I'm glad that just few people mock around while most presents their respects, so F for GTAO on PS3/360 platforms.

C'Mon ... i'm seeing A LOT of people complaining about this "bad practice" of R*, but are ignoring the fact that these 2 systems didn't had any new updates since Ill-Gotten Gains 2, almost 5 Years ago.

 

(Sadly, it is true that still some people outta there, but .. it doesn't make sense anymore).

 

360/PS3 Economy is resumed in heist + contacts missions ... no MC, no CEO, no Doomsday, Casino or Cayo Perico Heists,  no Yacht, no Cargo warehouses, no Car warehouses, no MC business, no bunkers, no hangar, no facility, no cassino, no arena, no arcade and no Cayo Perico. (outside other smaller things like cars, houses, missions, clothes, playlists and modes).

 

Excluding the golden vehicles ... the most expensive thing was the T20 at 2.2M.

 

The ones which are still there ... suffers with the classic bad servers, hackers and lag.

 

If R* cared for the old gen progress they could had made another character transfer period in the past, BUT never again after the swarm of modded accs into PS4 and XB1, from money to stats. (Some old friends still have their modded money and etc since 360-era). so a no-go ...

 

I started my character in day 1 after i was suspended from my school alongside my best friends, a lot of memories, from really good to bad, but it is time to go, sadly those systems are way outdated, and we are getting a newer version on top of that.

 

The only thing for now after R* movement WE can do is complain about the actual state of the game ... since they are killing the 360/PS3, i EXPECT to see some proper improvements in the E&E, starting with the servers and etc ...

A good time to upgrade was years ago when the character transfers were open, and now R* has stated they won't reopen them again just because they are shutting down Online servers on last gen, it doesn't work like that.

 

As a matter of fact, those still there in last gen should try to upgrade straight to next gen consoles.

 

Why? Because they will have start everything from scratch again: No money, no cars, no rank unlocks, no properties...

 

On top of that, they will have to deal with the constant NPC phone spam, learning how to fight the OP Mk2 which is f*cking hard to the inexperienced, etc...And all of that only so they could discover that current gen is gonna become the last gen when E&E is released, and will probably get the last gen treatment too(as in: R* will abandon support to it).

 

And we don't really know what they're gonna do about the returning player bonuses anyway, maybe they wont shut it down, maybe it will carry over to E&E.

 

Plus, the PS5/new Xbox are better made consoles than current gen, whose specs are quite outdated by now.

I don't play GT Sport anymore because that game is just flat out boring and the penalty system it has is so draconian it would routinely punish me for being hit by rammers and pushed off the track, my game copy sits in my tv rack gathering dust...I put it up for sale but had no takers, understandably so.

 

I only managed to increase my game library in 2018 though, because the games had become to expensive for to justify buying them at release.

I've pretty much only played GTA (2D universe onward) on PC, obviously missing out on the console/handheld exclusives along the way. 

However, a month after Online was finally released and I was getting into it, my computer went pop and I had to save for a replacement system (and upgrade too, obviously). 
Whilst I waited in limbo, I picked up a cheap pre-owned PS3 and copy of GTAV, and lived for a few months on console. Starting from square one was a bit of a faff, and naturally I was frustrated when 'Cunning Stunts' was announced (but I couldn't access it on the old console!) 

Fast forward another year, and I got a new PC. And rather than continue with my month-old character, I transferred progress from PS3. 
So then I had a few million, and free access to vehicles like the Dukes, Kraken & Dodo.

Anyone remember the first car GTA Online gave you when you had to slap the insurance on it after a while using it? I think I had the F620 during the introduction for GTA Online for that race Lamar drops you off at. It sadly got blown to pieces back in 2015 (forgot to call Mors Mutual and it was permanently gone) but I have fond memories of my first actually owned vehicle on the Xbox 360 version of GTA Online.
