GTA Online for PS3/Xbox 360 shutting down December 16th, 2021

Makes total sense. As someone who has had to try and maintain legacy systems before (in this case web services), it can be a nightmare to keep maintaining these consoles for so long, not to mention hindering updates to whatever underlying software and exposing them to security risks. They are 15 year old consoles, so with the release of E&E, it was coming a mile away.

And RDR1, GTA IV, MP3 multiplayer still "alive" on those consoles.

LOL this is right on my 30th birthday too.

Either way, meh, the place was overrun with modders and completely abandoned for years, it was a shell of it's former shelf.

I'm glad I upgraded to current gen all the way back in 2016, the tons technical issues while there were no modders freely running around pushed me towards making jump as soon as I could afford the console.

I won't miss being spawn griefed by jets and not even having a functional passive mode so I could drive around in peace at all.

They are actually shutting down MP3 multiplayer too, a bit earlier on September 16th.

Well time time to enjoy the good old days while it lasts 😛

Pre Oppressors and pre orbital cannons.

Virtually the only reason why I got a PS4 was because character transfers were ending on March 6th 2017 and got the PS4 a day before that so I can transfer my built up character to PS4.

GTA Online started a whole new chapter in my life. I started on PS3 right when it launched, so it's sad to hear it be sh*t down. Though, it was eventually going to happen.

Here's to more future updates for GTA Online.

Yeah I upgraded to Xbox one in 2014 specifically for GTA Online.

Man, I know it changes nothing for me, but it's still weird as hell to think it'll be gone. I do wonder if (what's left of) the community's going to get private servers together for that Oppressor-free version though.

I got GTA Online in July, 2014 because of the original Independence Day update, as it went on I started to play it more because of how much freedom you had at the time compared to other games. To be honest, I don't know where I would be right now if I didn't get GTA Online on Xbox 360.

It's sad to see it go, but it's better to shut it down than trying to keep it running longer.

In addition, Shark Cash Cards for GTA Online will no longer be sold for the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions after September 15, 2021.

I would really like to meet the people who would earnestly buy shark cards knowing it's all gone in a few months...honestly the idea of buying shark cards at all on the old consoles, instead of saving up for a newer console, considering all the everything they're missing out on!

Right, and will the game get a final patch that makes the game playable offline? Or will players get the chance to export their characters one final time to Xbox One and PS4 versions?

R* games:

giphy.webp

"But you can spend money on cashcards up until september to buy stuff, that you can watch it get pushed into the void later this year. Cool deal eh?"

It would be the right thing to reopen character transfer but it wont happen. Imo it shouldnt have been closed in the first place but it costs more money than it makes so its an easy decision for a company.

Shareholders dont care about the product, they only care about the cashflow.

An offline export does not really make sense at that stage of the systems life and I doubt that it would work from a technical perspective. Its doable on PC as you can see with nfs world butbI doubt consoles would handle it. And they probably would not get help from Microsoft or Sony.

IV Multiplayer and OG RDR Multiplayer still lives on (minus stat tracking that was pulled a few years back) Thank f*ck!

They aren’t like they used to be in the first years of release but people still populate the lobbies especially on Xbox 360. :^:

It’ll be a sad day whenever those two get the boot.

Tbh I honestly think it's a 0.x % of people, if anyone, who buys shark cards for those platforms anymore. I'd hope. :p There's plenty better things on current platforms and better things to come.

I'm kinda surprised by this. There's much older games out there that are still online, GTA IV and RDR included. They should at least take down Shark Card sales before then. Can't imagine paying real money for something in a game that won't be accessible anymore.

Quick question if anyone here could answer... If we have let’s say $3mil or something like that on our character from PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360 could that money be transferred over to our now playable character on PlayStation 4 or Xbox One when this shutdown does happen?

You could back when GTA Online was introduced to XB1/PS4 in 2014 (I brought over about $25 million), but then R☆ discontinued the ability to transfer characters at some point.

Answer from Rockstar themselves:

Quote

Will I be able to transfer my progress from GTA Online on PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360 to current console generations before it is shut down on December 16, 2021?

No, this is not possible. There is no feature available to transfer character data or progress from those platforms. All website stat tracking for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 via the Rockstar Games Social Club will also be removed.

All the money you spent on items is now gone. Well the money was already gone, but now the items you purchased are gone.

What a waste.

As someone who still maintains old Mybookliveduo running Debian with 3.6 kernel I double that. And that's a home NAS with a very small front-end web interface to control it. At some point I've said f*ck it and left the thing just accessible via SSH without any WD funny stuff. The poor thing was rocking 3.6 kernel, speaking of security risks.

GTA-wise, I think shutting down 360/PS3 is justified enough. It was a good run and the game on these old consoles was in a frozen state anyway, it's not the GTAO of recent years by all means.

I have forgot that the thing existed. Still have PTSD from PC multiplayer first week when publicly available trainers for single player were actually able to slow down time for entire lobby in multiplayer. Never again.

This will eventually happen to every online game. Don't forget to count your time invested too, because that's what really is important.... Unless it was fun, then it's irrelevant now. If GTAO just disappears from all platforms, I won't even blink, that was a good thing to play but time moves on.
