solace64
Ok I install vice city....Everything goes fine. When I double click the .exe to run the game it reads the cd for 2-3 seconds then stops. It doesnt even seem to make an attempt at running the game. For the record...The game worked yesterday fine and if i take the CD out it does ask me for it. Any ideas please? here are my specs. AMD Athlon XP 1600+ Geforce4 ti 4400 (43.45) Audigy Gamer (lastest drivers) 256megs DDR ram 75gig WD 7200RPM HD DVD-ROM Any help would be greatly appreciated
solace64
*bump* Come on anyone out there have any idea what so ever? It's funny because it worked 2 days ago. I tried reinstalling twice. The 2nd time I deleted all registry entries.
TiTaN_KGB
try a no-cd, might help. CD Protection can really mess the game up.

Tom Paris
That's very odd. I had the same problem, earlier today in fact. It happened exactly as you describe. I don't know how I fixed it, but eventually I gave up on Vice City for a little while and I just played Max Payne for maybe half an hour, then when I tried Vice City again it just worked. Caliban
Hi, I was wondering if you had any success with solving this? I have the same problem but more defined. I bought Vice City on Friday and installed it at work on my home computer (which I had taken to work that day). I tried it at work a fews times with no problems. However, when I tried it that evening at home, on the same computer, it failed to start exactly as you describe 100% of the time. The only differences were the monitor and keyboard. After some experimentation I have discovered it works 100% of the time on works 19" Iiyama monitor and fails 100% of the time on my Samsung Syncmaster 17GLi 17" monitor. It also fails 100% of the time on another 17" (non Samsung) monitor I have tried it on. I have tried all the normal things like removing monitor drivers in safe mode for detection but nothing works. I'm sure it must be driver related because if I boot with the Iiyama and then plug in the Samsung without any driver swaps it works fine, though obviously reverts to proper drivers on reboot. I'm running Windows XP Pro AMD Athlon 1.4Ghz 1 Gig DDR RAM GeForce 3 Audigy Platinum Panasonic DVD ROM I have completely reinstalled the game 4 times. I have replaced monitor inf files from a friends PC (game runs on his) and short of reinstalling XP I'm at a loss as to what it could be. Any suggestions would be appreciated

ChiroVette
Well add me to the list! I have the same problem. And it is on a computer that previousluy had no problem running this game. I click on the game, the computer starts to load it and I even the get that characteristic "CD icon" for a few seconds replacing my cursor. No error messages, no computer freeze, and yet no game. I also tried Uninstalling and reinstalling it. I rebooted the coimputer like 5 times and nothing. Anyone have like ANY ideas? Oh and I am using a legitimate, store bought copy and the game works on my other computers, even my Laptop, though it runs slow cause I only have 16 MB of Video Ram on the Laptop. solace64
What solved the problem for me was deleting the gta_vc.set file in .... \My Documents\GTA Vice City User Files
ChiroVette
Wow cool! That totally worked! WEIRD! Because I didnt think loading a file from the saves would effect the game itself loading. THANKS!
Caliban
That worked thanks solace64. Funny thing is I could have sworn I deleted those files on one reinstall but my save game from work still exists so obviously not!
bindybandy
I have exactly the same problem Strange thing is the game ran fine for a week and then became intermittnet and sometimes pushing space (sounds daft) while the cd loading icon was on screen would kick the game to life. Now all I get is the cd icon /hourglass and nothing. I can see the gta-vc.exe program in task manager in the processes list but that is it - zip - nada. Tried reinstalling, no cd exe, drive mounting software and my cd's are original and no joy. Seems a bit of a coincidence we all have a similar issue looks like a patch is required. I have tried deleting the file you said and still no luck:( Spec Win xp 2000 XP epox nforce 2 mobo 512mb ddr ram MSI GF4 ti4200 creative labs cd rom and "max" cd rom. Tonton Fred
Hi everyone, I have the same problem as some of you, except the game never worked once. Here is the post I made in some other game fora : Hi, I've been stuck with this game for two days and I haven't been able to run it even once. It installs perfectly, standard or full install, and tells me it is ready to play. However, it never launches when I run the exe... I tried several ways : 1) put the play CD (CD2) in the drive and start : a spinning CD icon will appear, the drive light will flash, for some time. After a while, it stops and that's it (no error message). Happens with both my Pioneer DVD drive and my LG 52 burner. 2) start without any CD in the drive : I get a message 'put the PLAY CD in the drive' (fair enough) 3) in desperation, I did a full install and downloaded a no-cd crack to check if it was a CD problem. when I run the cracked exe, the gta-vc process will appear for a second in the process list and then terminates itself... At first, I thought it could be that my drives wouldn't recognize the CD because of the protection system, but now that even the crack fails to load ANYTHING (even display an error message) leads me to believe that it's probably a conflict between the game and my system. I checked Rockstar's support site (very lousy) and found that VC has to be installed on the primary partition and in the default partition in order to work. Then why was I allowed to choose the path when I installed the game ? Smells like hasty porting to me. Anyway, I reinstalled the game at default, several times (even cleaned the registry to make sure), and never did get the game to load. I wrote a mail about it to the technical support people, who have yet to reply. I am at a loss here, if anyone can help me, I would be grateful... Fred Config info : Win2K SP2 AMD XP1600 512 MB RAM GFX MX440 64MB DirectX 9.0a In addition to this post, I also tried with a securom-patched image made from my CD2 with CloneCD/TwinPeaks and mounted on a virtual drive (followed some procedure I found on the Net) and it just makes the spinning CD stay longer, but still not a single message...
