solace64
Ok I install vice city....Everything goes fine. When I double click the .exe to run the game it reads the cd for 2-3 seconds then stops. It doesnt even seem to make an attempt at running the game. If I use an no-cd patch instead of reading the CD then doing nothing it just gives me the hour glass for half a second then does nothing. For the record...The game worked yesterday fine and if i take the CD out it does ask me for it. Any ideas please? here are my specs. AMD Athlon XP 1600+ Geforce4 ti 4400 (43.45) Audigy Gamer (lastest drivers) 256megs DDR ram 75gig WD 7200RPM HD DVD-ROM WinXP Professional Any help would be greatly appreciated. Evil Weasel
Having same problem. Worked fine yesterday but not today. Only difference to my system is I spent last night downloading latest Audigy 2 drivers etc. Can't think it could be that...?
solace64
It happend to me and the only notable thing I changed was reinstalling my videocard and using an nvidia refreshrate unlocker. But note that I had the refreshrate unlocker before and it worked fine and the drivers are the same 43.45 for my Geforce4 ti4400
I Shot Ya
im running Vice City on a sh*tty TNT 2 Riva 32mb card and its running pretty smoothly. I just have to close all other programs when playin it though. But i was actually suprised when i bought it to see it running with no freeze ups. Im gonna invest in a new graphics card probably Geoforce 3 or 4.
Evil Weasel
Because the CD has MP3s on it, Win XP seems to bring up the box about "Windows can perform the same action each time you insert a disk or device with this kind of file:" Perhaps choosing the wrong thing here is causing the problem...? Only difference to my system is I spent last night downloading latest Audigy 2 drivers etc. Can't think it could be that...? I HAVE A/THE SOLUTION!! For those that are having this problem, think back to the last time you got the game running, you must have done something to change your video or sound card, even such as installing new drivers. As I said, I installed new drivers for my Audigy 2. In the ReadMe file you will see that it says if you make changes to your hardware configuration, you have to go and delete some files. Here's what it says: Changing hardware / re-initialization: Changing either your video card or soundcard may mean that you get Grand Theft Auto: Vice City into an "invalid" settings state for the particular hardware. If you change hardware, to prevent having to un-install and re-install Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, perform the following:- Video card:- - delete from the "Grand Theft Auto Vice City/models" directory the files "TXD.DIR" and "TXD.IMG" (if they exist) - delete from the "Grand Theft Auto Vice City/data" directory the file "CAPS.DAT" - delete from the "Documents and Settings/Current logged-in User/ My Documents/GTA Vice City User Files" directory the "GTA_VC.SET" file. Sound Card:- - delete from the "Documents and Settings/Current logged-in User/ My Documents/GTA Vice City User Files" directory the "GTA_VC.SET" file. I deleted the GTA_VC.SET file and guess what, GTA VC started up!
Supersnake
ANSWER TO YOUR PROBLEM IS TO: Install the latest *AUDIO* drivers. Trust me on this as I received the solution from Take2 Tech Support yesterday and it worked perfectly when I did what he advised I had the identical problems that you did which are: 1. During installation I was asked "which player do I want to use for playing mp3s". Only those people without the latest *AUDIO* drivers will get this message during installation! Note that the game may launch after you choose "Windows Media Player" during that initial startup following installation but the next startup will not launch the game. Instead, you will get this... 2. Upon subsequent attempts to launch the game (following installation) you will be looking at the launch icon (the spinning CD) for many minutes and then the game just stops launching. (reason is that you are not given that opportunity to choose Windows Media Player again). Weird? Yes. Forgo all the hassles and simply install the latest *AUDIO* driver for your audio card. If you are using a Creative card go here to download the latest drivers: http://www.americas.creative.com/support/ Tech support said that the greatest majority of problems that they are receiving by email are solved by the installation of the latest audio drivers. It worked for me! Note: If you do download a newer set of drivers for your Creative Live card (and probably the Audigy too) be aware that your previous suite of Creative programs will also have to be updated too. I am talking about Audio HQ, EAX Animation, Speaker Preset Setup, Creative Diagnostics, Creative Sound Mixer, Creative Restore Defaults, and even things like your Playstation too. Good luck, it's a great game. Supersnake

Supersnake
I did all of the above and now instead of it not running I just get the error"Couldnt find 640x480 video mode" and it just doesnt run. Now what do I do ? Hang in there Solace, we'll figure out a way to get your game working I do know that upon the initial start of the game GTA VC will be displayed in a defaulted resolution of 640 X 480 so it sounds to me like your video card may not be configured to include 640 X 480 and that is why GTA VC is sending you that error message. Try configuring your video card to include the 640 X 480 and I'll bet that the game will probably launch - then after it launches in 640 X480 do as the rest of us did and go into the game's Options/Video settings and change it to whatever preferred resolution you want. See if I am right and open up your computer's Display Control Panel, select the Advanced Tab and find the area where it lists what resolutions your card is configured for displays. You do not have to change your monitor resolution to 640 X 480 - just be sure to see if 640 X 480 is listed! P.S> It doesn't hurt to first open up your Device Manager and verify that you have a current version of video drivers AND NOT SOME WINDOWS GENERIC ONE that somehow sneaked it's way onto your computer (grin). [ System Control Panel / Hardware / Device Manager / Display Adapters ] Good luck! Supersnake
