THE WEAPONS

The Smugglers life calls for the usage of time-tested weaponry, some of which are relics of a near forgotten Golden Age of American history. But what is not broken needs no mending, and so these classical weapons return to both strike fear into the hearts of your enemies, as well as dash down your opponents with great result.

The Flintlock Pistol

bEXoxo9.png

Although the Flintlock is an aged weapon, it is survived by the historic legacy of its stopping power and honorable role in the founding of our great nation. The pistol packs a powerful punch and can even strike foes with more accuracy and at a wider range than most modern pistols but suffers with its long loading process and regrettably complex mechanism. Though it may take more time to gain an intimate understanding of this American relic, the results will surely keep an avid gun collector satisfied.

Brown Bess Rifle

qBxDX0n.png

Much like its little brother, the Brown Bess emerges from the deep wooded regions of the Americas, clutched in the rusted grips of aged fur-trappers whom have never lost faith in their sturdiest tool. The Brown Bess is renowned for its great accuracy at long distances, but depends on the sureness of its wielder, as it suffers longer loading times from a trickier mechanism. A good shot from the Bess will surely down your prey and ensure the quality of its pelt remains pristine and unbothered by messy entries.

Cavalry Sabre

sword_PNG5504.png

A weapon wielded in a time of great turmoil in this nation, the sabre glints with the same luster as the day it was forged for the United States cavalry. The weapons speed and swiftness allows for quick and decisive slices against foes, while also giving some small distance from close encounters with enemies which may end poorly for either side. Additionally, the saber swings with a pendulous momentum that is by far unmatched from any weapon from horseback.

Hand Grenade

cbc9c1f43485c4f9439159405ce08b2f.jpg

Gone are the days of using mining tools to clear out enemy encroachments! The dynamite stick was made for clearing stone, not villainy! So returns the trusty hand grenade, an exquisite weapon of single and powerful purpose. The grenade comes in a number of devastating varieties, with smoke and gas to weaken and disorient enemies, as well as shrapnel to stun and startle bunkered foes. A note to our buyers; with these particular explosives; they tend to roll before igniting. Use with Caution!

THE BOATS

n5M0Yi6.png

As you progress, better quality vessels will be made available to you for your operations. While the most beneficial upgrade can be the speed at which your deliveries can be completed, other benefits such as purchasable upgrades with armoring, swivel guns, and cargo space will allow you to complete your deliveries more efficiently and safely.

Rowboat - $250

Small boat that can store up to five (5) cargo crates. Good for short trips but can’t take much punishment.

Broadhorn (Flatboat) - $500

Large, flat-platformed boat. Can store up to ten (10) crates. Easier to defend, but hard to steer and manage speed. Good for short to medium trips with more cargo.

Steamboat - $850

Medium sized boat with decent speed. Can store up to fifteen (15) crates in its hold. Moves faster than other boats but doesn’t do as well for defending its passengers.

Ironclad - $1,500

Medium-sized armored vessel. Can store up to twenty (20) crates in its hold. Can take a beating but moves slower than a steamboat. Good for longer hauls and distances.

Not only do you need to worry about Brown Water Navy blockades and patrols, but other players seeking your glory and fortune will surely become a threat as you progress!

Smuggler Role Progression

To progress in this role and make some ill-gotten gains along the way, the player will need to collect a Smugglers Contract from infamous Spanish smuggler, Capitaine Manuel De Vega, who has been living out of bottles and saloons in the bustling city of Saint Denis some years since his reign as a notorious gunrunner had ended. After signing a Smugglers Contract with the old salt, players can then purchase boat titles from a Shipwright, the nearest being in the Port of Saint Denis. Better quality boats will become available as the player’s progress.

You will also require a safe base of operations for which to launch. The Shipwright also can sell Dock Slips at locations across the map; some offering better strategic value than others. You will need to purchase at least one for your boat.

Slip Locations:

  • Thieves’ Landing
  • Braithwaite Manor
  • Van Horn Trading Post
  • Annesburg
  • Saint Denis

Once a boat is purchased, and depending on the boats you own, The Capitane can be contacted via the mail or by visiting him at your boat slip, as well as his other occasional pop-ups along the San Luis and Lannahechee Rivers. From here, he will direct you to different “opportunities” for collecting goods to smuggle.

THE MISSIONS

6WmeLxI.png

There are several missions which can be directed from Capitane De Vega that will allow players to source, steal, and sell cargo collected throughout their progression as Smugglers.

A player can perform a mission, which will give the player a random good (more goods per active posse members) or they can request missions per activated contracts, which are unlocked by progressing through the role.

While complete shipments for specific contracts are more valuable, players have the option to “bulk-sale” a diverse collection of their inventories to certain buyers rather than wait to fulfill contract orders. These are broken down into Small (10 Goods), Medium (15), and Large (20) shipments.

  • Midnight Raid: Only available at night. Players are directed to sneak aboard ships in the Saint Denis Harbor and steal goods from their holds.
  • Stockyard Raid: Players are directed to steal goods being stored at specific locations. (Can occur at Thieves’ Landing, Quaker’s Cove, Saint Denis Port, Blackwater, Van Horn, and Annesburg.)
  • Prepare to be Boarded: A ship is targeted for an attack; Players board and steal the goods on board.
  • Cutting out Competition: Players are asked to attack a rival (player or NPC) operation with the hopes of destroying it. Players are awarded in the location of hidden cargo.
  • Sink or be Sunk – Target “Brown Water” Navy ships and operations and destroy them.
  • Treasure Maps: Players are directed to a NPC, who has a map. They can buy the map or kill them. They then can use the map to locate a cache of hidden goods.

*If you have suggestions for more missions for this role, please comment below! *

Full Contracts can only be completed if the player has a Flatboat or higher. Full Contracts are always thirty (30) goods of a specific type (Tobacco, Weapons, or Rum).

jA6g4Hf.png

THE CONTRACTS

The real money comes from the right orders, or so the smugglers say. Capitane De Vega has a few irons in the fire, but he wants the right people for the right jobs. As you progress through the Story Missions for the Smuggler Role, you unlock new Contracts from specific sellers, which will allow you to cut in on their rackets and bulk-sell highly sought goods for larger profits on their behalf.

The Braithwaite Contract

Tobacco

yoFPFiQ.png

You are awarded the Braithwaite Contract at the start your swashbuckling career. The Braithwaite’s have resorted to smuggling their excess tobacco product out of Lemoyne to avoid the prying eyes of local Revenue Agents. From here, you will be able to smuggle tobacco goods across Flat Iron Lake, through the swamps of Bayou Nwa, and up and down the Lannahechee River.

The Reyes Contract
Weapons to Mexico

pjA7MeH.png

Vega has heard rumors that the Mexican government, led by a despotic tyrant across the border, is waning in favor with the locals on account of his hedonism and cruelty. A particular family in the region is using their wealth to smuggle weapons into Mexico in preparation for the inevitable; Revolución.

This portion of the story concludes with the contracts secured, and Vega and his partners gaining the smuggling rights to all weapons out of the Border States and into Mexico.

The Fussar Contract

Guarman Rum

lN7LDGr.png

De Vega has contacted an old “friend” of his, Coronal Alberto Fussar. Although Fussar prides himself on his stature and rule in Guarma, he does allow for the “slipping” of crates of Guarman Rum to the States for an easy profit. After going to Guarma to help the despot regain power from the local rebels, you are awarded the Fussar Contract, which allows players to smuggle highly valued Guarman Rum into the States.

6X3024n.png

DUELING

3sFgfhc.png

Players will now have the option to duel against one another in the open world of Red Dead: Online.

When a player challenges another player, the other player must accept the challenge to begin.

Players will be assigned to stand a certain distance from one another. Once both players are positioned and after a brief countdown, they will have the ability to draw and fire on one another. The showdown doesn't end until either one of the players lies dead, or one of the players have fled.

History to the Concept

The history of River Pirates in the United States is a long and assorted one. In the early to mid-1800s, bands of outlaws came together and across the waters of American waterways to terrorize those who were moving goods such as furs, lumber, and other high valued commodities up and down the Mississippi River.

It was up to the involvement of “Brown Water” United States Navy vessels and local vigilante groups to snuff out these pirates from their dens.

While pirates and smuggling are an intriguing part of American History, the river pirate scourge of the mid-1800s is often a lost chapter in the stories of frontier exploration and the American story, though it has been referenced and immortalized in Western Classics such as ‘How the West Was Won’ (1962).

Thank you to W. Flemming, my trusted artistic partner in these concepts, for supplying fantastic art to accompany this role concept. For commissions, please contact here.

Special thanks to Mr. Mansion and his crew for assisting with most of the amazing photographs provided in this concept, as well as the other creators and redditors who shared some of these pictures to the community!

Thank you for reading! I will be adding more images and updating text based on suggestions as the post matures. In the meantime, stay frosty!

Not my cup of tea but I think I'd love to try it out. If anything I want that fish tattoo.

Now my question is, why are y'all not working for R* making this game great yet? There is more effort put into this role concept, from the art, to the descriptions, to the role itself, than R* has even given their game in so long. 😉

Would be nice if we could smuggle some people who know what they are doing and respect their customers into R* headquarters.

😆💯

Not sure how "maritime warfare" could happen, when you have to be very careful

when doing anything on the water to not hit a "sink point."  I'm even careful

on the "steal the canoe and row it over here" missions.

Thank you for your kind words! :)

My goal with this and any update concept has and always will be to inspire those who may have some control over the games we play and bring some of these ideas to the players who want to see them in action!

I appreciate your feedback.

@WACKADOODLEDOO - This is very well presented.  Thanks for sharing.  :)

I've posted something with some similar concepts here (yours is more thought-out, I think): Suggestion: Frontier Pursuit - Bosun

You're welcome to incorporate any ideas you may find interesting.

Once again, mostly in the tin; Bosun.  The key to the Bosun's trade is, of course, their boat, which acts as both Vehicle and a smaller Camp (see pics).  Boats should be docked with an accompanying docking fee, depending on where you choose to keep it moored, and can be used for a wide variety of missions.  This should open up a variety of unique tools & upgrades, as well, such as: Fish Nets, Enhanced Lures, Spyglass, Steam Engine Upgrade (speed/smokestack), Hidden Compartment, Improved Cargo Hold, Ice Hatch, etc.  Maybe Advertising as an upgrade to increase frequency of missions?  Having a place on the boat itself to craft some unique Bosun-related items would be pretty cool, too - this would be an excellent opportunity to introduce something like Fly Fishing with its own rod and special lures, for example.  The Houseboat has a firepit for cooking, and the bed could be a good place to rest up/change wardrobe.  Collecting Deliveries should not be an option from the boat, but may be a nice station to have on the docks where it is moored.

The Bosun should be able to have two boats, with only one Active at a time: The Houseboat, for fishing/covert missions, and the small Steamboat for larger cargo/trade missions.  The Houseboat would have more Camp-like interactive nodes while the small Steamboat would be more functional for a wider variety of missions.  Both would be incredibly useful for RP & Immersive gameplay, for those who care about that sort of thing (such as myself).  This would also likely require a small adaptation of the same code that allows you to jump from one horse to another or to jump on to a moving train to hijack it, for NPCs to be able to do the same to you on your boat (and vice versa).

Smuggling: Pick up the Contraband from Point A and deliver it to Point B while evading detection and the Port Authority (law enforcement).

Iceman (Seasonal): Take your boat north of Annesburg, cut some ice from the river, and haul it south before the clock runs out!

Shipping: Pick up the Freight from Point A and deliver it to Point B while evading Banditos who want to steal it (PVP element, as well).

Ferryman: Give a Stranger a ride for a fee, from Point A to Point B to Point C to Point D...  Watch out for natural disasters and opposing traffic!

Fisherman: Catch X pounds of fresh fish and deliver it to the dock before the timer runs out.

Trafficking: Pick up the Cargo from Point A and deliver it to Point B, evading and defending your vessel from the pursuing strangers.  This can mean rescuing people or kidnapping them, depending on your Honor.

Trader Missions: New Trader Missions for supplies & delivery using your boat.

Moonshiner Missions: New Moonshiner Missions for delivery and eliminating competition using your boat.

Mudlarks: New underwater Collector Collections only retrievable by boat and hook.

Hobbler: Use your boat as a tug to help a stranger in need - or kill them and deliver their boat to a disreputable dock for profit.

Log Driver (Matchmaking Mission): Use your boats to drive logs upriver to the sawmill (herding logs instead of cattle).

Powder Monkey: Same as Shipping/Smuggling, but with an explosive element.

I'm certainly open to more suggestions if anyone has any.  :)  Does anyone have any story ideas?  I'm thinking something to do with Miss Maud Delancey, maybe?

DUELING

Uncross them. 😔

If anything they had thought of this but now that a player has come up with the idea they scrapped it.

Lemoyne outlaw

i just saw this picture on google and it led me here. wow this seems like it would be a great dlc. the timing is funny because rockstar officially announced their next dlc today. and looking at the trailer it looks like trash. rockstar screwed up royally with rdo. they could have done so much with this game. instead they just add more fortnight kiddy crap to a game that it doesn't even belong in. not to mention a game that is nearly ten years old. and is super outdated. its pathetic.

Nice to see this topic bumped, I had forgotten about it.

It's a perfect illustration of the wasted potential that is RDO.

Something like this would have me back playing daily.

It could easily lead into adding riverboat casinos, then even unique fast travel posts to Mexico where we could own properties (ideally I think the map should be designed around the addition of properties rather than shoehorn them into the existing map), stables would be completely separate giving us double the available horse slots, carriages & wagons, so much more.
