Lets be real, despite what nonsense Keighley is peddling, Summer Games Fest = E3.

The metamorphosis of E3 is interesting when put next to the evolution of the video game industry.

As far as the "big announcements"...what does it offer?  And what actually pans out?

It went from being a legit trade event to a weird hyped up pep rally.

Since E3 is now all these different separate company events along with E3, maybe we just need to mark June as video game hype month.

Nothing wrong with that.

I think that is exactly what Geoff Keighley is trying to do. He's no longer officially partaking in E3 due to differences on how the event is ran, and is doing his own thing, but as this is traditionally the time of year for this type of stuff he's still sticking to the E3 schedule for the most part. The "Summer" game festival sorta gives evidence to it as well.

With this years E3 being digital only it's the perfect time to go for the jugular, and I doubt MS/Sony/etc really care about being at E3, as it's proven to be quite an aging format these days - Sony certainly don't. The Summer Games Festival stuff with the playable demos, shadowdrops, betas, etc, is probably the way forward for me, being able to just play stuff for my self is pretty damn nice.

I just hope all this doesn't cause everyone to stop doing live shows with an audience and stick to directs and pre recorded shows even after the pandemic. It's so fake and has no spirit like classical E3. I have no problem with them slowly getting rid of the E3 compact format. But they still need to do live shows with an audience.

This is the only thing that got me excited so far. I'm definitely reserving my 2nd run for this, hopefully I get a PS5 by then.

More information is expected in a few weeks, hopefully in a Sony showcase.

I'm not a huge fan of Kojima but you can see how much of a fan of cinema he is. The cinematography in that trailer is top class!

Well I can't say I'm the biggest fan either, only played MGS2, 4, a bit of V and of course Death Stranding.

It's a slow burn, makes up for it later on in the game, though. It's also beautiful looking at times and there's something weirdly addicting about traversing the world.

I'll probs give it another dl soon haha!

I've never been what people would call a Kojima fan by any means, but I was shaking my head when he was comparing the covid situation for game developers with 9/11 in that interview. He's always been one to toss him self off at times, but a lot of super creatives are, but that's taking the piss. Geoff Keighley following him around like a puppy wanting food doesn't help either.

Anyway, I hear the Koch show was an absolute disaster, one of the all time E3 stinkers by the sounds of it. Very, very little gameplay with lengthy scripted developer interviews. Dunno how a developer with games to announce and show can mess up an E3 show these days, the golden formula has been around for years now. Games, games, games yo.

I don't understand why these companies do this. When you come to E3 you either show something worthwhile or you don't come at all.

Microsoft is going to put on a great show on Sunday, I think. They've got the studios and now its time to shine to Sony. I can't wait to see what's next for Xbox, it looks like Phil Spencer has finally fixed the brand and its heading back on knees again.

Yea me neither, EA do the same every single year as well with their god awful format that no one likes but they keep persisting with it. I know they don't have the sheer amount of games Xbox and PlayStation can put in a show, but they can at least fill time with some demos and stuff. It's why Ubisoft are good for a decent show every year, cause they always have trailers, announcements and a demo or two... you just have to put up with their French weirdness every year, but that's become entertaining.

It's not that no one wants to hear from developers, it's just that E3 shows are not the place for it at all.

While, I'm a huge Xbox fan myself and I'm excited for their show, it's good to keep expectations low enough. As Jeff Grubb said on his podcast, he's keeping his expectations reasonably low due to the fact that he still thinks E3 2023 will be Microsoft's year as it's then they'll be able to show the later exclusive titles like Avowed, Perfect Dark etc.

Having said that Miranda Sanchez made a good point that Halo: Infinite was delayed. Of course we're getting that this year but if that dropped last year as it was supposed to, what were MS going to show us this year had Halo not been delayed and that potentially could be a nice surprise.

I still think we're seeing Forza: Horizon 5 but we're still seeing Xbox staples; Forza & Halo, I think it's time we see something new. I hope there are some surprises. I imagine there might be another studio acquisition.

Just read this bit of news. It is unrelated to E3 itself, but since Ubisoft is making an animated Splinter Cell series...maybe they are trying to revive the interest in the series for a potential new game? It may mean nothing, but it's still interesting. Now it would be a good time to reveal a new game.

Splinter Cell and Prince of Persia are Ubisoft franchises I'd like to see revived the most, and PoP is already getting a remaster so that could indicate they are testing whether there's an interest for a sequel, or they have a sequel planned already and are just bringing the old games to the players who never experienced them.

If you told me Ubisoft are making a Rainbow Six co-op game based on the Siege universe I'd get super hyped. The idea of a fleshed out terrorist hunt style mode where you're saving hostages etc, like R6V campaign and whatnot? Oof

So what did they do instead? Make a completely soulless looking sci-fi shooter with roguelite elements.

Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

Well, overall, my comment earlier about them always putting out a decent show and showing games and stuff hasn't aged particularly well. No real demos outside of a spliced up R6E one, no Far Cry 6 demo, two game reveals I suppose, Mario+Rabbids and Avatar (took them long enough) but nothing really to play soon it seems beyond Riders Republic, which did genuinely look like a ton of fun.

Extraction still looks boring as all hell though, what a shame that game is.

Seemed like a typical Ubisoft press conference. Not necessarily bad but also nothing that really stood out.

It seemed like the only good thing about Far Cry 6 was Giancarlo Esposito. But it turns out even that feature is wasted because of the terrible facial expression design from Ubisoft. That is basically the most important part of his acting. Also nothing new on Beyond good and evil. I cannot believe how sh*t Ubisoft are these days.

Think that sums up Gearbox's show. Utterly pointless. Why they didn't show gameplay for Wonderlands I do not know, cause Jesus they had nothing else.

At this point Microsoft could show up, show Halo Infinite with a date, show Battlefield 6 and say good night and they'd have the best E3 show of the year. Covid has really done a number on game development huh.

that Riders Republic game from Ubisoft kinda looks like fun not gonna lie, aside from that Avatar game that looked really pretty and Mario + Rabbids 2 there wasn't really much stuff that interested me.

edit: they're still updating The Crew 2?? jesus christ lol

I'm not too sure, but wasn't Kojima bringing up 9/11 because of MGS2? Like, he feels like he accidentally predicted Covid with Death Stranding (deadly event occurs that forces everyone to stay inside and only couriers and other essential folk can go outside) and that it was similar with MGS2 and 9/11 (all the terrorism stuff in the game, lower Manhattan being destroyed, etc) for him?

Devolver Digital knocked it out of the park as usual. Putting the emphasis on showing off their games while at the same time ridiculing everything that's wrong with the gaming industry.

I found the 2020 pandemic edition of "E3" shows better than what we got so far in 2021 which is shocking, they all had plenty of time to prepare, maybe xbox/beth can save it, but i doubt it. Nothing so exciting has happened so far, it's like everyone ran out of ideas, and since almost every good sony PS5 game is available on PS4(GT7, Horizon 2, etc), i can say for sure it's going to be the slowest start of a "next-gen" era so far.

Early Starfield "making of" video leak says the release date is 11/11/22. I expected 2022 but not quite that late, covid must've hit them quite hard.

Better to do it right, Cyberpunk has probably make a few developers/publishers that extra bit wary of releasing a game hot too.

I trust Bethesda to release a game that’s buggy, but also a complete game.  I’m good with that.
