Bakkerbaard
I'm reasonably sure there's a gearhead around here that could advise me on the following and I thank you in advance. So, I'm writing a thing and there's a character in there who's supposed to be an unlikely professional. The line that is supposed to make this clear is: "...that doesn't mean I don't recognize the sound of a 440 Hemi." Is this how one professional mechanic would say it to a peer? Extra detail: It references the 1970 Dodge Challenger R/T (Vanishing Point, specifically). While there are more than enough specs to be found on that fine machine, I'm not versed enough in engine-speak to know if 440 is the number one would use. I believe it references a 440 magnum, because the Hemi puts out 426bhp. I've only read this, obviously. Last time I got my hands dirty I was playing soldier with plastic guns. So, would it be a 440 Hemi, 440 Magnum or 426 Hemi? All this for a throwaway line... Just seems like one of those things I should get right. sivispacem
For a Challenger R/T would either be, in order of performance: 383 Magnum 440 Magnum 440 Six-Pack 426 Hemi The real Vanishing Point car was a 440 Magnum.
