Fxk u Rockstar
battlefield 1, red dead redemption, battlefield v, assassin's creed, cod world at war etc. or battlefield 4, gta 5, battlefield hardline, cod modern warfare etc. if you had to pick one type to play for the rest of your life, would you choose games taking place in modern times or games taking place decades/centuries ago
Algonquin Assassin
This one is rather difficult for me as most of my favourite games vary from period pieces to modern/future. I can’t say what I’d prefer as it mostly depends on the game/story being told. Mister Pink, EGA_6 and Ivan1997GTA
Bigglo145
I definitely prefer games that take place in older time periods such as rdr, gta vc and sa and the warriors. I even like shooters that set in older time periods like battlefield 1, but i love history as well. I wish more open world games were set in the 70s-90s period. Guest
Modern, generally. Especially when it comes to shooters like Battlefield and Call of Duty. I prefer to use present day guns.
shadyslady
Now Red Dead Redemption 2 has awesome graphics and is detailed all over the place. But I think since it is stuck in the past, it will never ever progress and eventually come to a sudden stop. Which it did. Are there any more updates? And if so, what is there to gain, new skins? That engine should have been a dystopia game like fallout, days gone, mad max, hell, even a fantasy game or Sci fi. Something that allows progress
sabitsuki
Doesn't matter to me, honestly. All that matters is execution. To me Mafia II was as immersive to the 40s-50s as Horizon Zero Dawn was to a post-apocalyptic tribal nomadic society in the distant future. GTA-Biker
Thinking about it,most of the games I really like are period pieces (GTA VC, VCS and SA, Mafia 1 and 2, COD 2 and WW2, Battlefield 1, Medal Of Honor Airborne, Red Dead Redemption 2, AC Black Flag and Syndicate, Far Cry Primal, The Warriors, etc.).That being said,I do like some games with contemporary setting (NFS Underground, Underground 2 and Carbon, COD 4, GTA 4, Max Payne 1 and 2, Spiderman and Spiderman Miles Morales, etc.) or futuristic/sci-fi setting (Doom games) a lot too. Kris194
It depends on the type of game. When it comes to open world games I prefer period pieces because I can't experience it in any other way. Games set in the past are like Animus in Assassin's Creed series for me. I like also open world games set in the future or just sci-fi games but they have to be really well executed. Just for an example, I'm dreaming about Star Wars game with huge, detailed world with all these planets, locations etc. Edited May 11, 2021 by Kris194
-l-
Both, but it depends on the type of game. Ivan1997GTA
Tycek
Modern, either present day or future setting. I think wild west is as far in the past I could go.
PolishRye
dunno why, but i love 2010s setting in a city that has some harsh winters and harsh neighborhoods - nyc, chicago, detroit, baltimore, even washington i would actually love to see carcer city in gta one day
Bella Odessa
While I lean more towards modern, I guess it ultimately depends on the game for me. I've played games set in the dark ages, and I absolutely adore RDR2 and Vice City. The most futuristic game I'm currently trying to get the hang of is Phantasy Star 2. Mexicola9302
The only games that i liked that took place in medieval times were The Elder Scrolls games, and Witcher 3, sure these are fantasy games. I also played some RDR2 but, i don't like horse riding very much. In The Elder Scrolls you don't have to ride horses, in Witcher you have to, well i just did because i had to in Witcher and RDR2. i prefer games that take place in 1960-2022 or in the future. 40's-50's was a crappy time vehicle wise, and don't even get me started on the 1910's-1930's. Sure there aren't vehicles in all games, but in many that i like. Also the music matters, i hate 90% of 80's music, so if a game takes place in that time, i might not like the music. I didn't really like GTA Vice City because of that. Well i prefer atmospheric backround music, that fits into what's happening, much more than "real life music" ingames. I liked the music in Mafia 3 very much, that was a good time period music wise. I do like some classic rock, blues etc. at least hip hop and techno wasn't a thing back then. Yeah i guess vehicles, music and weapons matter the most, i prefer to shoot and not to use swords etc. in Skyrim i mostly used crossbows/bows. i mean the rest is mostly genre specific that can change. I currently do a playthrough of all Mass Effect games, finished ME1 Legendary Edtion, now im in the beginning of ME2. Creed Bratton
Anything is more interesting than modern times, IMO. But that doesn't mean that a game set in modern period can't be good, or even great. It's just that I tend to play games to get lost in a world that either doesn't exist or one that no longer exists. Games are a form of escapism and fantasy fulfilment. There's just more to it in games set in the past, IMHO.
Darth Absentis
Metal Gear Solid is mostly modern, Assasins Creed is rather old/modern, and with Silent Hill it even matters less. Pretty sure i consider it quite irrelevant. For me at least.
Mister Pink
I can't decide because for me because variety is what I like best. I love going from playing something like RDR2 in the wild west, where the colour tones are earthy and technology isn't advanced to a jumping into Cyberpunk 2077 and witnessing what life could look like in 50 years in the future in a kind of dystopic nightmare. Certain modern and contemporary settings just aren't enough of an escapism I crave in a game. I would have said before I preferred games only rooted in some kind of realism, mimicking the world, hence my original love for GTA and even football games back in the day. But now, I'm immersed in period games like Assassin's Creed, RDR and LA Noire. They offer something a bit more thematic and stylistic that modern games don't posses. Having said that, I love games set in modern times too, like the Hitman series. I don't think it needs to be set in modern times but it just works. If you put a gun to my head and made me choose, I'd probably pick period piece games. Why? Because there are many different periods to choose from; moderately modern (70's/80's/90's) to really older times 1800's or 1500's etc. Very different scenes and settings. Modern, is well, modern. We all live in modern times. Nothing out of the ordinary there. EGA_6, The Tracker, Algonquin Assassin and 1 other 4 𝙼𝚄𝚂𝙸𝙲 𝙽𝙾𝙽 𝚂𝚃𝙾𝙿
