Look I'm not a game dev but I think on paper its feasible obviously depending on features they want and balancing memory budgets ect. Using some wizardry ocean optimization/procedural generation  as a catalyst to stream in new islands and other information in the background is possible imo. Plus they are looking into cloud tech. All about how much memory they have to work with mostly.

The GTA franchise, and Rockstar in general, always borrowed the best aspects of other games unrelated to GTA and incorporated them into games they made.

However they always favored a balance towards arcade-style gameplaying and less about realistic sims, whenever that trade-off was available.

That golden age, when just about anyone could add whatever they wanted into a game if they felt it was a good fit after a quick chat with the team, is gone forever in a very big structure. It's now a managerialized and metered system where layers of creative directors cascade technical requirements to the minions below and it's all on the clock. I would guess that there is still some scope for organic creative input, thank f*ck, but I doubt it's anything like as permissive and therefore much less creative. There are also plenty of requirements to polish turds, I would speculate.

You’re talking about flights over the ocean? Then yeah I thought we were talking about the whole US which wouldn’t be feasible if rockstar wanted to keep their signature fidelity and polish

Which is exactly what rockstar will do. Why go to the effort of developing miles of empty ocean or perhaps land just for a minority of players to use?

What miles of empty land are you talking about? Do you have any idea how US actually looks like? The Crew 2 is a very sh*tty example of this. That's exactly why I don't like these "entire US" maps in games, it's always details lacking sh*t

A game map that would have a realistically scaled US would ironically be repetitive, bland, and feel copy-and-pasted. I do think that Rockstar could make things less condensed but the scaling could only go so far before it would go from feeling large and immersive to just bland and repetitive. Currently GTA cities and countrysides are condensed to the point where it makes things feel like they cram so many landmarks into such a small area that it makes it feel like a theme park instead of a city but the opposite extreme would also get a lot of complaints. GTA maps should became less condensed but only to a certain extent

The US still has a lot of 'empty' land, though. It's bigger than mainland Europe, minus Russia and Scandinavia, etc. So, there's a LOT of empty land. The UK is smaller than California, for example. And traveling around England is too far, for many people here.

My problem with a large US map would be is that the story wouldn't make sense. You've got to have a reason for the protagonist(s) to go through all 50 states (48 nobody going to Hawaii or Alaska lmaoo) and make sense. That just isn't possible unless it's a Bonnie and Clyde type of story and I'm not really a fan of that (Unless it's a Claude and Catalina😍 GTA 3 Bonnie and Clyde type prequel :kekw::kekw::kekw:). Criminals do not go through all 50 states most of their operations/activities are focused on one state/region/city/neighborhood/street corner for the most part. Sure you may have a couple of guys who run things in a couple states but those states are all within reasonable distance between each other or at least on the same coast. (The only exception is Las Vegas with the Mafia and their casino operations)

A lot of criminals stay in their neighborhoods. They don't believe there's much outside of it.

why stop at the US? make a 1:1 hyper realistic North America so I can fly around the continent.

Why should Rockstar limit themselves? How about whole world with every single building being enterable? :kekw:

Imagine thinking about the whole United States in a Grand Theft Auto game seeing how small Los Santos was!

I do know what the us looks like yes. But realistically they would never detail a world that size to Rockstar levels, its just not feasible. Even if we ignore hardware limitations, the amount of extra time and cost that developing a map of that size world bring just isnt worth it. We're talking about a minority of players that would fly for this long rather then teleport if given the option.

Also as a few people have pointed out here, the US is actually pretty empty IRL. Not the US but a few years ago I went across Canada on the Canadian (Train) and you can genuinely go hundreds of miles between seeing some form of human inhabitation. This is specially noticeable on the plains where its completely flat as far as the horizon, and the only details are the odd generic farm and small ponds. Its pretty weird seeing that coming from the UK where you can barely go a few miles without finding some kind of settlement.

What about Scotland? It's pretty wild and empty once you go north of the Edinburgh - Glasgow belt.

My view is that a game can be located anywhere, with a map of any scale, and it can still in theory be made interesting and engaging. It's the content that matters, the setting is just the stage.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, Rockstar should just stick with what they're currently doing. One major city, its outskirt communities, and their surrounding wildernesses, but with less condensing as others have mentioned. I don't see the need to have a USA-sized map unless it's for GTAO so players can travel between maps and such.

Still clinging on to the Project Americas idea of flying drugs across the sea between two cities

Spoiler

something like 5 min flight that could be skipped by fast travel or better yet actual immersive airport -> intense going past security check in with drugs hidden on you to an actual passenger plane

but nah, the gameplay will be the main character in some basement with a covid mask on and a text saying: "Press Square to hack"

Sorry to change the conversation, but I was thinking about the Rockstar website and visiting the old V website, I was curious about what the "VI" will be like.

Have you seen the New World map site? https://map.newworld.com/en-us/

GR Wildlands, in addition to the map has interactions: https://noheroes.ghostrecon.com/en-GB/index.html

Reminds me more of V's original site: Miami city https://www.bbc.com/storyworks/specials/moving-to-america/your-guide-to-miami.html

other great interactive map https://marseille.laphase5.com/en

NmaHyzr.png

I would really like Rockstar's mkt to risk it on a more interactive site containing all interactions in the GTA universe or an app too.

I think GTA 6's map will be 50% bigger or twice the size of GTA 5's map, but with a better usage. If it's indeed going to be in Vice City, then probably 2/3 of it will be occupied by the main city, surronding towns and settlements and just 1/3 of woods.
