It’s crazy how much longer AAA games take to make now. It’s a possibility that GTA 6 could release over a DECADE after GTA 5 did. Whereas before GTA 5 we got FOUR mainline games in only 7 years. It’s not just Rockstar, look at Halo for instance. Halo Infinite took years to make but launched without campaign co-op, whereas in the Xbox 360 era we got Halo 3, ODST, Reach, and 4 in not a much larger time frame then the time between Halo 5 and Infinite, and all those games were feature-complete at launch. We got 3 Elder Scrolls games between 2002-2011 but now a decade after Skyrim the next entry is apparently only in pre-production.
 

These days AAA development simply takes far longer then in the Xbox 360 days. The games now look better, but honestly if you play a good Xbox 360 game on an emulator with a modern resolution and framerate they still look great. I know that modern meshes are technically a far higher quality then in the Xbox 360 era but Xbox 360 meshes and models were far better then those on the PS2 yet AAA development didn’t seem to take any longer. It seems like modern AAA games are often intended to be played for years. But the thing is AAA games from back then also offered years of value, such as GTA 5 and Elder Scrolls. They might not have originally been intended to be played for a decade but they offered a ton of value simply for being great games with a lot to do and see. 
 

Xbox 360 games had far more complex meshes then the generation before, but AAA games still took far less time to make then today and they were still great. Wonder why AAA development times absolutely exploded with the PS4 and Xbox One
