While most people wants specific new games from specific franchises, I believe that anything Rockstar creates with passion will be good, I don't think that RDR2 is my favorite game because I prefer the Red Dead franchise over the GTA franchise, but because that game specifically is good as f*ck and if Rockstar creates a even better game from a different franchise, either already existent or brand new, it will become my favorite game over RDR2 as well.

I mean, just speaking logically... as time goes on, after 3+ years after RDR2's release... we're only getting closer to the announcement of GTA VI. So, even at this point, we're starting to get into the territory where you don't have as much need for facts, evidence or even legitimate leaks for an incoming announcement. Time itself is the biggest clue that it's coming soon™...

That's honestly pretty on brand for major AAA companies nowadays. The examples are right before your eyes. Naughty Dog announced The Last of Us 2 back in 2016, alongside Uncharted : The Lost Legacy, almost 6 years ago. Rocksteady took 6 years to announce the new Suicide Squad game after Arkham Knight was announced in 2014. It'll be 7 years from Arkham Knight when it actually releases.

Bethesda barely revealed Starfield and Elder Scrolls VI in 2018 but I suspect those were probably failsafe measures in case Fallout 76 shat the bed at launch and in hindsight they were right to do so . Starfield was only properly revealed in 2021, 6 years after Fallout 4 and Elder Scrolls VI will probably release in 2024-'25 at the earliest. And both Bethesda and Rockstar supported their online games in the meantime. It is ludicrous to not take that work seriously because GTA Online is practically a game of its own, just like Elder Scrolls Online, pending a standalone release this year. And you can somewhat compare Fallout 76 with Red Dead Online, although the former is a much, much better game at this point. You don't have to like them, but they do exist and many people actually like them.

 

In fact I'd say a 5-6 year gap between major, flagship releases is pretty good for a company like Rockstar, especially taking the scale of their games into consideration. Could they do things better? Sure. A smaller scaled game between major releases definitely wouldn't hurt but the industry has changed rapidly within last 10 years and games are not as quick or easy to make anymore. 

It's getting increasingly difficult to make yearly Call of Duty sequels and now that it's up to Microsoft, they might change it up and let studios have 4+ years years to develop a game instead of the usual 2-3 years.

Many people mock Ubisoft's lack content variety, repetitive game design and frequent re-use of assets but that's the only way they can churn out games of that scale in 2-3 years. Over 15 studios worked Valhalla to push it out in time which is practically insane. 2 more years of development and it'd probably be a much better game. All of these caveats in game development are some of the reasons for the rise of service games that can go on for years before loosing steam.

 

I for one, expected a 2021 announcement, for any new Rockstar game but after how the pandemic f*cked us over in last couple of years I can easily see why that could slip into 2022 or beyond. It's annoying, frustrating, sure, but what can we actually do?

Making games is just a bit of a pastime for Rockstar at this point.

 

Like they are so busy with the wife and the kids (GTAO) then they suddenly remember after 6 years what they used to do for fun like, make games.

 

I get that games take a lot longer to make and everything, but the lack of any other games and Rockstars stonewall silence just makes it worse.
