Remember when most of this forum was 100% certain that Grand Theft Auto VI is going to be released on PlayStation 4, just one year ago most people in here wouldn't even dare to suggest that PlayStation 4 would become obsolete so fast.

PlayStation 4 was obsolete already back in 2013. Just take a look at leap in games between PS1 and PS2, then PS2 and PS3 and now PS3 and PS4. Many games on PS4/X1 were like "shinier" version of their predecessors. It was probably worst gen we've ever had.

RDR2 does not look like a shinier RDR1.
Spiderman ps4 does not look like a shinier previous Spiderman.

The only way I see VI supporting last gen consoles is If Microsoft cuts a multimillion $ deal with R* to make it available for Xbox cloud streaming. (or Sony makes a deal for its own cloud streaming service)

GTA V is a game that will be supported for a decade. So GTA VI will be, too. GTA V is already available on Xbox Game Pass Cloud streaming, so you can bet GTA VI will be too, to whatever degree. Who knows what the gaming landscape will look like in 2030?

As much as I'm reluctant to admit it, I can kind of see where Zelnick is coming from here. T2 would very much prefer to shift units of a title directly to consumers than to share the fenced-in revenue from a subscription service. That's naturally a viable position to take if you own studios consistently capable of making dominant AAA bestsellers. Why share the revenue from a subscription service with others if you're the one driving the biggest proportion of the income?

 

Or, to paraphrase Zelnick, he thinks that T2 already vastly under-charge players for the games they sell, so if anyone thinks they should join some subscription scheme and dilute their unit prices even more then they can get stuffed!

I have to disagree. I've played more indie games in the past 12 months than I have in my lifetime before that, thanks to Game Pass.

What Strauss basically said that big third party games like FIFA, CoD, GTA (i.e the games that most people buy consoles for) etc. will never release on a subscription service day 1. I mean there's a reason why MS is on a studio buying spree. They need tons of good quality first party content to keep Game Pass decent value for money. 

 

GTAVI might come on Game Pass but probal 2-3 years after it's release and for say, 1 month and that'll convert into more sales anyway.

Or rather people will try out (indie) games they wouldn't otherwise buy because they are readily available on gamepass/some other subscription service. It's a great way to broaden your horizon in games and try out games that interest you but not enough to buy them. People definitely do not get gamepass just for the most well-known AAA titles. It's a great value even just for AAA titles and when you have such a large library of games available, you are definitely more likely to try them out.

And I am sure this will be the case with GTA 6 too once it drops into some subscription service some time after release. Those who wouldn't buy the game but at the same time are mildly interested in it will play it and some of them will decide to stick around and possibly buy the game for themselves.

My main argument as to why I think subscription service will never take off as a primary source of distribution for new video games is the financial one. I think GTA 6 case (or really any other big budget video game) can be compared to the situation in the film industry.

Do you think that it would be financially possible for big budget superhero movies/Star Wars etc. to thrive if they released on the subscription service and not in cinemas first and on subscription services later on? I mean sure some movies would definitely survive, but we are not talking about any movies, we are talking about those that take hundreds of millions of dollars to make. In these cases it would be impossible to match the revenue generated by movie tickets just by putting it on streaming at the same time or pretty soon with the theatrical release. The way I see it GTA 6 and other big budget video games are like Marvel movies. They are highly anticipated and therefore many people want to play them as soon as possible. They are willing to pay full price for them, and those that are hesitant ... will have a chance to try them out in a subscription service some time later.

I believe there is a lot of such games that can benefit from not being included in a subscription service from the start. Sony knows that too, their first party exclusives appear on PS Now only after some time, not at release. 

If this Netflix way of gaming is the future full of just AAA games, I really wouldn't want it. I played a lot of AAA games and while this is just my opinion, it's easy to get burnt out by them, some of them are very samey. Indie games can be full of interesting concepts and mechanics that aren't quite explored by many AAA games purely because not many companies are willing to risk with the ever-increasing development costs. 

In fact I would argue that a future in which indie and lower budget games are more prevalent is quite likely. "AAA games fatigue" can definitely happen especially if developers like Rockstar will fully focus on just their biggest franchises.

Depends on when they entered full production and if theyre waiting for GTAO to die out, but honestly its hard to say. It will depend on many factors

Easily, the only issue is that you need really a lot of subscribers and that's the target of Microsoft. Let's say, that you have 50 mln subscribers and each of them pays 10$ per month for it, that's like 6 bln $ per year.

Especially that in this hole, which is Eastern Europe, everything is much more expensive than in the West.
