I don't think it will be announced this year. Though nothing would drum up interest for the Trilogy Remasters and GTAV Expanded quite like an announcement of VI.

With the trilogy and E&E releasing this year, we can safely rule out an announcement this year.

Next year sounds a little premature as well, based on the latest rumors.

I think early 2023 sounds reasonable enough.

Dan Houser once stated that they only make GTA games for the end of a consoles life cycle as thats when they know the most about the hardware - I'd expect that this is their approach for GTA VI.

GTA4 was 2 years into the gen

I believe they actually prefer to "test" a new hardware before releasing a new big title. That might be one of the reasons for remastering GTA V into the PS5.

They only ever did this for GTA 5.

Well only if this engine was not proprietary and other studios used it to make games but it's not so we can't really rate it some way. I do think most of result is due to the talent and hardwork of the devs coupled with time and money than the engine itself but it should be at least really good to accommodate such system heavy open worlds with great visuals, physics, complex ped and animal A.I. interactions and those games are some of the most technically impressive open world games in the industry.

 

And RAGE = Rockstar Advanced Game Engine so RAGE engine sounds awkward.

I know this is a little off topic but I was reading up about the current state of microtransactions and I’m starting to become convinced that they will destroy GTA 6 and the gaming industry as a whole.  I don’t know about Rockstar, but the big “AAA” companies have been cutting staff. They have no incentive to create anything new. And when they finally do it doesn’t even look like a game. I mean microtransactions are scientifically engineered to manipulate underage kids into becoming little mice in a Skinner Box.  I was looking forward to GTA 6, but now I think that maybe we’re part of an old paradigm and we’re going to be surprised about what the “game” looks like. They’re making so much money and putting in so little, they don’t want to do anything to mess with their golden goose.
