It's no rocket science honestly. GTAV/GTAO is the de-facto game you buy with consoles because there's nothing comes to close to it as a total package. The story mode alone will last for 50-100 hours which even after 7 years is still extremely high quality and Rockstar is continuously adding content to GTAO which can net you literally thousands of hours of gameplay if you like it. Above all this game is fun to play for both casual and hardcore consumers. This will only increase with PS5/Series X launch.

 

Look at this comparison between GTAV physical sales and console sales (this is from 2016), it's almost as if they run parallelly. I imagine it's pretty similar with digital too.

I've said this before - GTA V is basically the Windows XP of video games.

I think it’s because everyone knows what GTA is or they’ve had an experience playing it in their youth or whatever. So if someone decides to get back into gaming they are going to think GTA. The game is not complicated to play either. It just appeals very heavily to casual gamers. 
 

For example my Dad knows what it is and he’s never played a video game in his life.

It still is one of the best and most complete games in the market. You can finish the main story and you still got plenty of sh*t to do, plus there's the entire online frenzy.

 

And no other open-world game has managed to top GTA V since 2013. At least no open-world game that is set in modern days (with Internet, cellphones etc.). So we can say that the lack of competition/or the lack of competence and creativity from the other developers is also to blame for the long-lasting and exhaustive empire of GTA V.

I'm more surprised that no other company has tried. Especially since they now have a wide open shot. They're just afraid to shoot. Watch Dogs had an opportunity but they f*cked themselves over with the downgrade and certain decisions they keep on making on what direction the franchise should go.

It's been 8 years. Some company should study what GTAV did right, what it did wrong, and take some notes. They could have a good game but with their own unique touch.

The longer that GTA5 remains the top of the charts, the more viable the business case will be for a rival studio to make a credible attempt to launch a game that takes a big slice of that pie. I'm sure plenty of that thinking is going on right now all over the place.

 

But really that's yesterday's news.

 

GTA6 is where it's at. Serious competitors are likely thinking not about out-competing GTA5, but about what will compete in any way against GTA6.

 

Hence the radio silence from Rockstar.

 

Hence our frustration about the radio silence.

 

Hence the mania, paranoia and apocalyptic pessimism.

Exactly but that shot costs $400+ million with 5-6 years of full production with 3000+ devs and there's an extremely high chance it might fail spectacularly.

 

Cyberpunk ticked almost all the boxes and look at how it turned out. YouTube community tore it apart by comparing it to GTA.

 

No publisher who's capable of making something like GTA (Activision, EA, Ubisoft have the resources) will try to go head-to-head against GTA. It's an expensive fight, too much of a gamble, one that they're not willing to take. Honestly, Activision would rather invest more into CoD than make something like GTA.

If Rockstar spent $400+ million in a slow paced moody western then just imagine what they'll do when it comes to their flagship franchise which hasn't had a sequel in 8 years. They'll pour literally everything they have in GTAVI so that it lasts for decades.

I don't doubt they will. I was looking at it from the perspective of competitors, and in general.

 

Even though no rival studio might be able to compete head-on with Rockstar, there will be niche aspects of gameplay that they could emulate, pertaps even improve upon and then monetize. That's just the same for gaming as it is for cars, architecture, ship design or ice cream.

 

Or fracture mechanics, bovine medicine, cheese bun baking or nuclear power plant construction, for example.

Who knows what future holds but right now I'm not seeing any evidence honestly. Almost all the AAA open world games that came out in last 6-7 years (and the upcoming ones like Dying Light 2, Elden Ring, Far Cry 6, new AC, Horizon 2, Starfied, Forspoken etc.) are either fantasy, sci-fi, medieval, post-apocalyptic and so on. Only Mafia 3 in last 6 years is something that's remotely similar to GTA imo. Maybe Cyberpunk too (they did say it explicitly was going to be 'the next gen open world' experience) but also very different in many ways (WD2 and especially Legion tried hard to differentiate themselves from both GTA and WD1), so I'm very skeptical.

 

All the companies that can compete with Rockstar in resources have their own successful titles to invest more money into. 'Why chase a wild goose when your usual sh*t is making money hand over fist' is their motto. For example Ubisoft is Assassin's Creed Infinity which is emulating GTAO, Fortnite but it's mechanically very different. Similar with Activision and CoD Warzone which was a natural step for that franchise.

 

Seriously, take a look at Skyrim. It is both extremely successful and influential but nobody really emulated that format except BGS's own Fallout 4 (and ESO, FO76) and it has been 10 years.
