Some people who voted for 90's, 70's, 60's etc would rather have a modern setting than a Miami Vice game. Not all, but some.

But they didn't did they? Vote tells the tale son.

Because why not? i definitely want and so do many. My biggest gta wish is to see gta game with these great new graphics, setting in 90s San Andreas with the gangs and "sh*t". That would be amazing.

My dream.

Like I said that would be "waste" of the GTAs available. GTA:SA has everything you want from an early 90's California gangs -setting (and SO much more!) so graphics alone don't require a second take (physics complement the arcade gameplay). Modern LV, sure, 60's SF, sure.

The poll tells me of 100% of the votes, only 24% want a 80's setting and almost half of them want a modern setting. This is how polls work.

I like the idea of next gta setting in 80s but i dont want it to be another too much of a vc/miami vice/scarface copy either. Pablo Escobar/cocaine cowboys themed would be more interesting.

...but also im okay if its set in modern. Yeah well really i wish it was some where else than vice city. Las Venturas would make me much more "hyped" about next gta than vc.,,,,, but then again when i think about it, LV would probably be again game about heists like V so that would be little boring and repeative too..... Next gta should be about gangs or drug smugling or something else, not big heists again. Idk. I just wish the game is worth all this long wait.

bruh, I really want an 80s miami setting. but now that I think about it, it would be harder to expand the game and have as many gameplay systems as GTAO currently does. A lot of it relies on using a phone and modern tech. I would like if they did the early 2000s. but why are we even worrying? Rockstar will do a good job with whatever they think will provide good satire and gameplay opportunities

That's a nice break from all the setting talk.

I don't see a modern day gang war GTA happening really. Heists have become a part of the series' identity over time, but drug smuggling or smuggling in general would be a great addition. They haven't explored the drug trade much. Chinatown Wars had a drug dealing minigame that was fun to play imo but it was still very limited and they didn't bring it over to V.

Miami would make sense for a game that revolves around smuggling and the illegal drug trade, so does San Francisco.

I'm still waiting on a good argument as to why T2 and R* would choose to do 80s over modern day.

no argument needed. Rockstar will do whatever they feel like doing for the next GTA game. if thats a game set in the 80s then thats what they are gonna do.

If any GTA protagonist can fit several firearms and grenades up their asses, I bet they can fit this bad boy as well for narrative phone calls

Spoiler

Galleri: De mest banebrydende mobiltelefoner - Computerworld

Text messages from characters and players could be sent through a beeper, where the LCD screen mutates into huge page to either write or read text messages. An older Nikon camera for taking photos could be shoved up the ass as well, as the concept of carrying around a vintage camera the size of a soccerball in RDR2 made perfect sense

well GTAO has stuff that we dont have today and might not have anytime soon so there is no reason that they cant add smartphones and whatever they feel like in the game set in the 80s.

Car phones and pay phones can help, too. Radio tracing and tracking down signals has also been a thing for decades. Smartphones in GTA aren't anything like their real life counterparts so it's not hard to keep the features inside the game.

Bro they're not gonna set the game in the 80's...that literally makes no sense business wise I don't know why I'm seeing this all over. The new generation are gonna wanna play around with modern day culture. In-game modern social media references such as tiktok, extreme liberal views from something similar to Twitter. Latest super cars, super yacht, weapons and tech. They want modern rap music, pop, whatever is popping right now. I see a bunch of older people in here that want a game from a time period when they were younger but in all honesty, they're going to try to appeal to teens and people in their early 20's born in the 2000's like me. Common sense, a Modern or near future GTA game is going to have the most longevity and near limitless ideas for additions as compared to adding stuff in-game that's gonna be appealing to some new generations of fans. Aiming for the widest audience is the best choice.

I can assure you it's not older people asking for a game from the 80s lol. I don't think I have seen anyone claiming they want the 80s setting because it reminds them a time period when they were younger. In recent years popculture has been obsessed with the 80s, and it's not really a nostalgia thing for many fans of such media, be it films, tv shows or videogames. I really doubt there are many people here who experienced the 80s in such a way they remember it well either.

I do agree that if they want to continue the theme and overall feel, gameplay mechanics of GTAO (which is currently set in present day with modern technology), then yeah modern day setting is a no brainer.

But having an online mode where you cant really steal cars and have to buy them doesn't go against everything a Grand Theft Auto game is supposed to be?

Literally? I don't know,

-badassness

-a protagonist

-criminality (hacking)

-silly legal-ish side guests

Sounds pretty GTA

The description "Badass female hacker protagonist doing tik toks" sounds like it's trying to appeal to woke 16 year old, left extremist SJW girls trying to make every game politically correct like The Last of Us 2 and Battlefied V did. It kind of sounds like it's screaming "HEY! LOOK, I'M A WOMAN AND I CAN HACK JUST LIKE MEN CAN". Now if it was just "Badass hacker protagonist" who's character isn't centralized on them being a Woman and trying to break the gender stereotypes then I'd be fine with it. That's just MY opinion though.

The term SJW itself is an extremist right wing slang, so what was your point again? Yea, a preacher, overly political female hacker+tiktoker protagonist doesn't fit GTA well but you don't need to attach it to ideological nonsense.

Reagan was out of Office and Bush came in, the USSR was collapsing in 1989, the economy had recovered from a recession in the early 80s, the 1989 overtown riots.

That's more early 90's things, and R* already cover that era in San Andreas.

Oscar worthy games like RDR and Last of Us are the exception, but I prefer GTA to have less story and more of a free flow gameplay.

I'm sorry but even the Sátántangó of video games has a mediocre storytelling compared to any average movies tbh.

Not true,as a Gen Z born in 98' i can assure you i don't find 2000's as special as 80's,i really like internet and era-specific cars, but it doesn't give any special benefits in a game like GTA(Internet).Sure in 80's world was more f**ked up,it's not cakes and ale like some people'd say.I don't like post 95 mainstream music to begin with, some people say "Music tOday DoEsN't SuCK,YoU jUSt NeED tO DiG dEEpEr" yeah no sh*t Sherlock,we're talking about mainstream music.I don't like 80's fashions also,i just like 80's music scene overall.as for GTA VI being set in the past,i like the idea of being forced to use payphones, car dealerships(not like people'd buy a car from a website)It's much more immersive that way.

The main reason why GTA VI would likely don't will be set in the 80's - modern technologies. They shoot really nice in GTA IV and GTA V, and this is unlikely that R* decline it in next part.
