Nah, I want a modern setting, more possibilities and will probably provide more longevity for the online portion.

The things that have provided the longevity to GTA Online don't even exist today; Flying cars, rocket bikes or laser guns. Just saying, it's all possible in an 80's setting. It actually fits the crazy sci-fi 80's movie tone better, also.

But yeah, modern day is a solid bet. Nobody really knows yet, however.

That's true, I still hope the game is set in a modern setting, I guess the content can exist whenever, but for whatever reason I can accept it being in a modern setting more than I would do for it if it was in the past.

 

That flying mosquito doesn't make sense in GTAO right now but it would be even weirder and more out of place to me if the game is set in 80s lol

I feel like statistics don't really support this notion. Redemption 1 already was selling GTA numbers as a new IP back in 2010 and Redemption 2 outsold every GTA except V and we all know why V reached those heights which many of you don't like.

 

Without Online GTAV probably would reach 60-70 million copies sold by now and that's the culmination of decades worth of popularity whereas Red Dead 2 is already close to 40 million sold and it's not even 3 years old.

RDR1 sold 5-6 million in 2010. Good for a new IP but barely cracked GTA numbers when IV did 20+ million in 2008.

 

Revolver did like 1 million or 900k.

RDR1 sold over 8 million copies in 2010 and It was a new IP as you said. (Revolver was barely a Rockstar game. It's DNA is from Capcom).

IV had 3 blockbuster games (III, VC, SA) behind it and it took 3+ years, not 1 year, to get to that 20 million mark whereas RDR2 sold 17 million units in just 8 days. It trumped both IV and SA's lifetime sales comprehensively in much less time and it's only the 2nd game in it's franchise. Only GTA RDR2 isn't as popular as is GTAV.

Late 70's also had the Star Wars craze (among many other sci-fi hits) and the ever-present UFO/alien conspiracies piling up from the last two decades. Just saying .

I'm hoping they do things the right way, as I dont want a repeat of GTA 5.  Franklin was created simply to satisfy CJ fanboys, so I really hope the main theme of GTA 6 doesnt revolve around Vice City or Tommy.  I want it to feel like its own game rather than 2.0

VI in modern day would touch on the very same themes V did and even though it was 8 years ago not much has changed. R* doesn't want to repeat themselves.

 

It seems like a lot of people want GTA V 2.

I hate to dogpile on the whole "GTA5 story bad" thing, but the story was bad. Franklin especially could of had a TON more depth. Hopefully they take what they learned from RDR2 and use it in 6, give us a story as good as GTA4 with gameplay better than 5.

Culture in 2013 compared to now was very different. There are so many new things for them to make fun of, parody, and reference. GTA5 was all about heists, there were missions that weren't related to the heists but they didn't really leave an impact. With 6 as long as they don't make the entire story around doing heists they won't repeat themes. They barely touched drugs at all in 5, same with the gang life, so I don't think touching the same themes is really gonna be an issue.
