With the small scale stuff though is he talking about the singleplayer or just Online? Because if it's online it's definitely going to start off small.

The game in general, I'd imagine. GTA Online 2 will naturally grow and evolve over time.

I'd expect GTA VI to be closer to GTA V than RDR2 in terms of length and general scope.

Not to sound pessimistic, but given Schreier's quotes from speaking with employees, in their effort to reduce crunch, rewrites and delays, we know they're aiming for a smaller game but still big by their own standards. I'd expect something on par with GTA V.

If we want to be more positive we can consider the fact that some game developers talked about how the SSD and new technologies will make game development faster , so if a game took 5 to 6 years to finish in the past it should take less now so maybe that is a counter effect for the reducing crunch argument. Rewrites and delays are a result of perfectionism so i dont know if i want that to go away because i appreciate R* standards and im sure that has to do with the final result. More or less im expecting game development times to remain very close to what we are used to.

My bad. I jumped to a conclusion, way too fast. Sure thing, it's FACTUAL alright, yet it doesn't mean it's like that because of the reasons you guys mentioned. I'm not saying I'm right, but in all honesty, long development cycles are more of a business model than anything else when speaking about AAA sphere, with the entire psychology and philosophy behind it. Especially when T2 is involved. I'm trying to make a point, not to have an opinion simply for the sake of having it.

Multiplayer games? Only if skill and challenge are involved, and there's no microtransactions, of course.

@Zapper

Who said I was playing that joke? If gameplay is much more than shooting and driving, which is true, then you should have mentioned what so special about that gameplay part in Cyberpunk. Shooting as well as driving are key components, crucial elements, the very gameplay backbone of that type of game, and if nothing, then simply because its creators ADVERTISED it as such. Heavily. All those dialogue RPG elements are pure $hit without shooting and driving in that type of game, because then you would be playing something a la Telltale's " The Walking Dead ", which isn't bad by itself, but it's a completely different pair of shoes then.

@Len Lfc

Well, all that tiring motion capture combined with excessive, theatrical voice acting made almost exclusively for long and exhausting cutscenes, is taking a toll on gameplay department. Game characters are closer to being actors than video game characters. Waste of time. Years even. That's my humble opinion, but my not so humble point is obvious when you look at shooting and driving aspects of gameplay, in GTA V for example. Seriously, I can't fathom anyone with decades behind mouse, keyboard or controller, that will say it's decent even. Not to mention enemy AI. Those things look like they've been made by some indie studio while on their way to bankruptcy.

What my ultimate point is, is that the gameplay should be greater than the story. It's not a video tale, it's video game, darn it. In no way, shape or form should the narrative overshadow gameplay, not even by the slightest of margins. And that's what Rock* has been doing for the last 13 freaking years, trying their utmost to make a perfect thetrical, movie a like work, while constantly failing to make even a decent video game. What cheesy cliches, or cheesy one liners managed to do in just a couple of seconds, the amount of point they have got a cross during the golden age of GTA, isn't even possible after watching series of cutscenes nowadays.

Cyberpunk's gameplay was fine by my standards (what I expect from those kind of games). The game needed better combat balancing and much more RPG elements and less bugs but it never felt unplayable to me by any means.

Video games are much more than just pew pew shooty shooty gameplay. For example Fallout New Vegas has pretty bad shooting gameplay without mods and other enhancements but as a role playing game it's surely one of top 5. Also Disco Elysium doesn't have any combat whatsoever but it's something that can only be done in a video game. RDR2 is the ultimate video game western with some of the best world building and writing in the industry with gameplay that suits the mood of the game. All of them would be diminished as a film, show or a book.

On the flipside most multiplayer games, roguelikes, sports games doesn't depend narrative at all, they're gameplay first. The Soulsbornes are fantastic gameplay first with only great lore and worldbuilding to help you with navigating the world. One of the most beloved games of 2017 Zelda BoTW is almost fully gameplay driven. There is room for different type of games and they focus on different parts because they don't have infinite budget or time or manpower to develop it.

Rockstar focuses on a cinematic narrative with some choices baked into it with a sprawling open world for you to f*ck around and make your own fun (obviously having side quests and mini games) and they're pretty much the only ones doing it at that level. That's exactly what they would've done with the 3D era games if they were made today because that's their entire focus. If you don't like it you can play simply other games. And both dialogue and gameplay wise GTAIV and V completely demolishes every 3D GTA in every way. RDR and RDR2 even more so. Only San Andreas had more arbitrary content than any other GTA.

If you want better shooting play CoD, Forza for driving and so on. Options for everyone, that's modern gaming for you.

They just need to improve their mission design, yeah this has been said before but I'll never forget how in rdr2, in one of strauss debt collecting missions (the one in which arthur goes "you have some money for me boah? I've seen your name in our ledger") you hunt this legendary animal and then the game tells you to go sell the whole thing to the butcher in strawberry, in that moment I thought

 "hmmm, well usually the pelt of the legendary animals is meant to be sell to the trapper, maybe i can sell the skin to the nearest one and then take the meat to the butcher? I might even get a unique outfit :O"

So i decided to do that, and what do I get on my way to the trapper? MISSION FAILED i don't even remember the reason but yeah, it was a rather disappointing moment :(

AFAIK you sell legendary animals at the trapper and was that cougar you hunt in that mission legendary at all, I don't remember honestly. Nonetheless people did have valid criticisms about RDR2's missions in some cases although that didn't affect my enjoyment of the game. We can even see Rockstar trying to do things differently in Casino and Cayo Perico Heist. I just find it funny that Mafia 3 and Ubisoft games are criticized for having open world player freedom over narrative density and RDR2 is criticized for exact opposite reasons and Mafia 3 did have a solid script.

How to overcome it, I don't really know but mostly it has to do with time and money really. You either choose how cinematic or how player oriented your game is gonna be.

I see both sides of it and I agree. But I also like the cinematic nature of Rockstars story and missions. However, I do think they could allow players more freedom unless it's absolutely necessary to keep them on a certain track.

Whole frame work of the game is undeniably Scarface with a happy ending.

Technically Vice City is GTA IV if you think about it since it came after GTA III :kekw:
