I think the next GTA is going to be contemporary because Rockstar has been focusing a lot on music and music curation.

This is a big reason why the game will be set in Modern Times.

or how about flashback switching like max payne 3 ?

Max Payne 3 is really, really underrated masterpiece. I still have chills when I watch this

It's such a shame, that it sold so badly, Rockstar will probably never, ever try again to make another linear game.

i think time switching can be a possibility, let's say you can switch from pause menu, then the progress automatically saves in current era, and you switch to another era via loading screen, on modern consoles with ssd's it shouldn't take long, the whole gta v map loads in like what, 10 seconds? yeah, they basically have to do two maps, but it doesn't have to be too big, like 20-30% larget than v map, and the "modern" map can be just ported to online as an expansion.

Have you seen the music that they're into? It's some electronic club music that actually could fit in an 80s setting if it's part of the original score.

The problem is that if it's 2 vastly different eras, they would have to do more than just different maps. It would require new vehicles, weapons, new peds with not just different clothing but different voice lines to feel truly authentic, different set of radio stations with different radio hosts, songs etc. There is a lot they would need to do to make it feel authentic. Technical aspect is the least of their concerns, but the amount of resources it would require is something most people don't even realise.

Of course a timeskip of like 5 years is much more doable, but 80s and present setting in a large map is hard to imagine.

BTW, a question to the old heads - what were the time period arguments back in the GTA V pre-announcement days? Was pretty much everyone on the board with modern times?

Most people believed GTA V would be Vice City. Because GTA III was Liberty City, GTA IV was Liberty City, therefore the next game would be a return to Vice City. Oh and it absolutely wouldn't be called GTA V, because numbered GTA's were only for Liberty City and on new console generations. I think people did think it'd be 80's Vice City again. But I don't recall the time setting being a hot topic, back then. Also GTA Vice City was a reason why those that thought it would be called GTA V would be set in Vice City.

The thing is if map size is only slightly bigger than V's then plane trip will be very very unsatisfying, let alone potential online gameplay.Overall world range should be at least around double v size so all the different areas around map can offer enough gameplay contents.

And tbh it's not about any sort of loading screen thing for switching to different time periods, the whole mechanism needs a story to explain why you are able to flashback and you can't make the switch happening way too often otherwise it won't serve the plot with anything good.I guess if multiple eras is indeed the thing then you can only move forward and never turn back.Maybe they can justify player's "I want to stay" by introduce some mission choices and big story events to make you have the possiblity to "end all the things" in early periods so you can stay there forever, but if you choose different path story changes then things will move forward to the recent period like protagonist have to stay in jail for years or something.Only my two cents of guess, personally I still think they ain't gonna waste this idea cuz we do have couple of games bouncing around the different time thing by now and the trend is obviously ain't tease for nothing, let's stay tuned to see the show

I love how most things mentioned here still happen, from people saying that the numbered GTA always takes place in modern times, to the GTA VI:ce thing, lmao. History repeating itself.

I suppose we can't be. But the next incremental number is usually the placeholder for the next game. GTA Next is less common. Having said that, there's been multiple CV leaks referring to "GTA VI" So there's that.

You mean this song?

IMO it doesn't have a Vice City vibe or fit GTA at all and fits more for a game like Bully imo.

This is my fan made idea for a Bully II trailer. It starts with Arcade fire playing that song  and then it zooms into our teenage protagonist(s) driving a car even though they are underage or don't have a license yet with their friends in the back referencing The Simpsons. Then a montage of them getting in trouble doing a bunch of sh*t at the school.

I've seen you mention this multiple times and every time I read it I think it's a great idea, let's hope you won't have to explain your idea/concept to new members even after 2024 lmao

Fully depends on the vibe of the game, but I think Everything Now could fit as an intro song if it were an uplifting intro, or perhaps a trailer (maybe it would fit a trailer better). I do want me some Arcade Fire in a modern day GTA pls.

The song they use for the trailer will more than likely be one most haven't heard of. Which will then become their new favourite song. Maybe.

Uplifting tone  don't work for a crime game like GTA imo.

If you want modern this works much better imo. The dark cold streets of Chicago with some Rap music.

That title is also perfect when you'll look at fans posts. Most of the time it's literally "We want Everything now, Rockstar".

True, Rockstar's trailers & mainly radio stations in GTAs have introduced me to so many great songs that I've never heard before. It's like how Tarantino's movies have some great songs which aren't popular until after he uses it.

Anyone else hyped for what the games score could be like? I just used to leave the game paused now and again to chill. 😆

Dude... beyond hyped. That track just brings back so many memories of sitting on the install screen waiting to play after I got back from the midnight release!

Middle Class Roadman

Will GTA VI be set amidst the Northern Ireland troubles where you play as a young Aiden O'Malley in the 1970's?

I haven't watched this episode in at least 10 years but I remember that it's actually one of my favorites. You just injected me with an awesome dose of nostalgia.

On topic question:

How many of you actually used their secondary online character in GTAO?

I did, a lot, and since they didn't add this for RDO I was wondering what the chances are we'll see it return in VI.

I just don't understand why anybody would say something so definitive, one way or another. Nobody knows for sure. So why risk putting egg on your face?

because 80s from a financial point makes no sense its about online people dont want to hear it but thats the main reason rockstar are doing a sequel for the online portion.

naturally we will get a good story likely drug smuggling between miami and somewhere in south americas for a few missions will be fun.

the only question is really will the map be more then south florida hopefully scouting leak seems legit and only florida would be a step down from a last gen and ps3 game before that south florida plus mountains would be a nice mix.

Okay another reasons why I think it will be Modern Times:

- R* has many DJ friends that play Modern music.

- They released all GTA5 DLCs with Modern music. Don't remember any pre-2000s song. The Cayo Perico one being the most clear that they are moving this path.

- Ice Cube or Dr. Dre (I think it was Dre) appeared in Cayo Perico. Maybe they will use more famous people in online from now on.

- Speaking of online, they will be able to make live concerts with real singers like in Fortnite with Travis Scott (I think it was him).

- The radio from GTA5 has many famous artists that use the in-game radio to promote their shiet. I imagine there is some money involved. No reason to get rid of this.

- Everything mentioned before can not be done with the 80s, 90s, 00s setting. In my opinion.

- Forgot to add that if the game is set in modern times, then adding old school songs is no problem, but if the setting is in the past, adding modern music would feel strange. Again, here they are limiting themselves.

Well besides the numbered gta always being modern you also have the fact that Rockstar hasn't done a single gta game in the past since gtaIV, it seems to me that they prefer to use a modern setting for the hd universe, aside from that I just can't understand how people can think the game will be in the past, like you have:

GtaIV & EFLC: 2008

Gta:CW: 2009

GtaV: 2013

GtaVI: "Obviously the 80s bro" (some people for some reason)
