- Rockstar Games themselves made it up. Everyone knows that companies release to the public controlled leaks and R* is no exception. They could test the reactions of their fans and from there change things. But I don't think it's the case as everything in this fake leak was known from before and it didn't reveal anything new or different to other leaks. However, it's still a posibility.

Project Americas would fit this description better than whatever aberration was made yesterday, if this were to be an option. lmao. Reaally don't think this is the correct option either.

Modern times are terrible.

One is always available, the music is mostly sh*tty, traffic consists of plastic toy cars with batteries, decadence is no longer popular and political correctness is the predominant theme.

Modern times is where the devs shows there true imagination , i just saw FC6 gameplay reveal the theme of the game is beautiful but it's filled with unnecessary survival , sci fi , fking modern rusty weaponry and i am pretty sure R* loves present time , modern/present times doesn't necessarily means cyberpunk 2077 / sci fi. Modern times actually gives an advantage of action packed missions. Missions in gta V and SA were hella fun, i like the fact that R* keeps there sci fi in limits and don't add unnecessary modern tech stuff which balances the realism tone

compromise: what if it starts off in the 70s or 80s (prologue) and progresses into modern times (like rdr2)

Could make for some cool gameplay, especially 1st person. Shooting, changing seats, getting on the roof, etc. Would you guys want to see a feature like this?

GTA5 is used as a platform to train 'real life' AI driving software. See here and here as examples.

So you have AI NPC drivers in GTA5, and their not-at-all-nuts driving behavior is applied to teach a second and more sophisticated AI driver, which might one day be used in real cars on real roads! What could possibly go wrong?  :kekw:

What if it just the prologue mission that set in the 80s? while the rest is modern times?

The idea of multiple eras sounds cool and all, but what happens when I finish the game? Here I am in the modern times done with the story. Then what? What if I want to return to the past again? They're just gonna let me do it through the menu or something?

Driver: Parallel Lines had that feature. Once finished, you could easily switch between eras (1978 and 2006)

I ended up playing exclusively in the past. lol

If era switch is as easy as switching V's trio, then how long the loading will be? even with the power of PS5/XBOX Series X, I don't think a transition that quick will be possible.

Even though I don't think it's happening it is perfectly possible.

Rockstar has the money, recources and no doubt the time to make it all happen.

VI has to be more groundbreaking than any other game that came before it. It has to fill the largest shoes ever in gaming history.

Otherwise it wouldn't make sence releasing a sequel to V.

GTA V is still selling 20M copies a year and will likely break the 30M mark in 2021 thanks to E&E... in its 8th year since release... That's about the same RDR 2 managed in its 1st year and this isn't just any game it's the 13th best selling video game of all time.

My point being:

R* doesn't need an updated GTA V with a new location and a new story line... They can just keep " expanding" and "enhancing" V's Online.

GTA VI and the continuation of Online need to come with features that will break the universe of gaming in order to make sense releasing.

Rockstar has been doing this with every new iteration of the game but this time the stakes are a gazillion times higher.

if you are playing a non-linear story, you are playing a time-travel story, not a crime story.

That’s why I think the multiple era thing is probably true. It will be VI gimmick so to speak. Probably why it’s taking so damn long as well.

It really doesn't take long if you take into account the development of RDR2 and how much resources it took + the supposedly messy development which caused the release date to stretch. It is a long wait since the last GTA release but RDR2 was a project that was miles above any other Rockstar game in terms of detail, and it also had a longer campaign.

Speaking of multiple eras, I believe it will be implemented in VI in some way as they played with the idea in RDR2 where it was quite a bit easier because the game was full of areas that don't rapidly change over time. With a city-based environment like in GTA it would require an immense amount of resources to do multiple renditions of what is presumably going to be a very large map. So I don't believe we will see a fully realised multiple renditions of Miami - 80s, 90s, present day etc. If the game features South America as rumours suggest, they can definitely do something there. Presumably the South American part of the map will be comparably smaller to Miami, yet big enough for Rockstar to produce something impressive in regards to changes over time.

For example a prologue chapter set in South America, let's say 80s, then the game transfers to Miami and eventually in later chapters you start visiting South America again, this time in present day.

Man thank god that leak was fake.... Leslie Jones? The f*ck? Lol who comes up with this sh*t?

by the way hard to see how they would do a drug smuggling story set in modern day... the technology today.

Time-switching anytime you want sounds like a pain in the ass to pull off from a story telling point of view.

I think the next GTA is going to be contemporary because Rockstar has been focusing a lot on music and music curation. A game set in the 80s would be very limiting music-wise.

And no I'm not saying music from the 80s suck, please don't let this be the message to take out from this reply.

No, it was a casting couch. Get your fax straight.

I also want to point out that the concept of time travel isn't new to Open World games as Driver: Parallel Lines had a similar feature.

That's why I'm against different eras, it's alright for me if Rockstar somehow implements changing eras mechanism in a non cheap way, it won't be immersive if you can simply hit a button and that's it you're in another century.
The time for each "era" in RDR2 was decent, it's subtle so you don't have to go back only to experience minimal things, but, the thing is, we define an era by it's themes and vibes, so, if it's all the same, it's somewhat semi-era transition.

Elements of the past can be incorporated into a modern setting to please a wider audience. Remember Manhunt? It was set in the modern day, yet the synth score and crazy characters made it seem like a John Carpenter movie from the 1980s. You can use a retro aesthetic, with modern trappings, so it feels reminiscent of a different age, whilst still being set in 2045 or whenever the Hell Rockstar actually makes the damn thing.

And you know what else? If they took more time with worldbuilding, giving different areas character and backstory, that too can allude to the past. Imagine seeing a random building with old bullet holes, then finding a piece of in-game lore which reveals that some mob boss or whoever was gunned down there twenty years ago. That's the sort of thing they could do.

There's a million workarounds they can use to set the game in the modern day whilst still giving it the feel of something like Vice City.
