Free Roam Fishing Challenge Advise

I suck at these events and often catch literally zero fish! Why are the mechanics of these events so different from free roam?

 

I literally use Eagle Eye to spot fish use either Special Spinner or Appropriate Special Lure and can’t catch a damn thing!

 

But if I stay in same spot using same techniques afterwards in Free Roam catch fish so easily!?

I've won a couple of these, but can confirm it's sometimes harder to catch - compared to normal free roam. 

Sometimes players bunch up, seems like fish get confused if there's more than one lure in the water close to them. I've had this happen in free roam when a friend of mine was fishing close by. 
Can recommend trying to find a spot away from others, and using the appropriate Special Lure. 

Don't recommend the Special Spinner, it makes everything bite, including small fish. 
But you describe not being able to catch anything, so that doesn't seem to be your problem

I've heard other people say this, but on regular Xbox One it is exactly the same for me in both

the 3 or so times I did the events since this started.

 

So the river fishing one, that I tried, I used the regular River Lure and ran to a spot I could get sturgeon or something; I came in second.

I think the other guy had a "good big fish" spot before me, I had to run for a bit. I really caught up pretty fast, though, he only beat

me by five fish or so.

 

Was doing just like you said, equip fishing pole and eagle eye and saw big fish.

Unequip fishing pole and run a bit and repeat until see big fish. Before I got wise, then

started trying to find the big fish, was just using "bread bait" which catches everything

else (no matter what the info on the baits say.) If I'm trying to catch bass(small or large)/trout/sturgeon/northern pike/muskie,

then I'm just using the regular lures for where I am (lake or river); works great (oh and large catfish = swamp lure, or that

for Sturgeon/gar in the swamp area too.)

 

 

I fish the same way as in the regular open world, for the events.

 

I cast a bit behind where the fish is and reel in a bit, then I do ONE click to "attract fish", then rather slowly reel in. I eagle

eye while doing this, actually seeing the Sturgeon/whatever turning around and coming towards

where the reel is. Then it lands it.

 

I also immediately run a bit to where NO players are around, for those events.

Following another suggestion I read, I also ALWAYS release the fish after catching them

in the events; then you can catch them again/don't deplete them in that area.
