AutisticTorch
Honestly I don't necessary see the point in yearly releases of sports games such as NBA or WWE. Sure, maybe once every few years for graphic updates I suppose, but annual releases are kind of absurd. I don't see much difference other than 1. an excuse for micro-transactions and 2. new sports stars for that respective sport. Apart from that, I see zero difference unless you compare one from today, and one from 10 years ago (which would be last-last gen, so it would obviously be different). Topic has probably been made before but I had a look so it shouldn't be a dupe of a previous topic. (although I didn't look very hard tbh) EGA_6

Jason
For football (soccer) games, about 10-14 years ago, the annual releases were actually really good. You could still argue if it was really worth the fresh $60, but the improvements year on year were huge, there was a lot of innovation and improving from EA in the Fifa games as they went for Pro Evo's jugular, which they did successfully. And then they stopped, and Fifa is now a disaster, and Konami doesn't give a damn about PES and basically just sends it out to die every year. I was lowkey delighted to hear that both 2K and EA will be making competing golf games though, EA also had the complete domination of that sport and the games got worse and worse until they forced one year to port everything over to Frostbite which was such a monumental amount of work the game was broken as hell on launch and contained a fraction of the features and customisation prior games had, so hopefully 2K throwing their money at their golf game and EA reinvesting in their golf games might actually produce a good game. But yea, Fifa (and some other games I'm less familiar with, but I know they have card/fantasy modes like Madden) releasing every year, at this point, is just EA's way of being able to get away with resetting Ultimate Team progress every year so everyone buys packs with real money again. Mister Pink
Yeah, they should make new titles every 2-3 years and update them. There's no excuse anymore for full-fledged titles when almost everyone is connected to the internet now and can download patches. That said, PES did half-price 2021 update and not a full-fledged title as they're upgrading to new Unreal Engine 5., so there should be an improvement. And I also think playing a game every year will give anyone burnout. I mean, games and titles evolve but a game of football is still a game of football. The rules are the same, the stadia are the same etc etc. You can only try improve the AI and change so much. I never bought football titles two years in a row since about over 10 years ago. You might get away with it as a kid or teenager, when things are still new and evolving. I don't think as an adult you can really buy two consecutive titles and not expect to be let down. I think the developers are responsible but I also individuals are too with expectations. As I said, it's still a game of basketball or football. Not much can change from title to title. Algonquin Assassin
I feel motorsport games like Formula 1, MotoGP etc tend to hold up a bit better with their annual releases because the devs actually try to add new features. -l-

Yeah, not much can change. I got NBA because of PS Plus and I was bored so I had a go, and a friend of mine (who loves NBA) was watching and I asked if these were basically the same every year. He obviously responded with "Yep." Jesus, why do people let EA, 2K etc. get away with this sh*t? They really should just update them instead. Zello
I buy NBA 2k every year idgaf. There's also the social part. If your friends buy them every year you're going to buy them every year. Also they shut down the servers after two years on the old games. This is what you end up getting when the servers are shut off Edited April 2, 2021 by Zello

I wish games weren't like this. I would genuinely try to enjoy NBA if they improved this aspect of the games.
Zello
Some of the games have kinda slacked since their competitors have stopped making games or they got an exclusive deal. With good competition they had a reason to put out a decent game now with none they just don't bother. EA stopped making NBA Live but that may return soon since some 2K devs joined the team. Madden is going to continue to be crap because of that exclusivity deal with EA. NHL also has an exclusive deal with EA MLB was a Sony exclusive and when 2K was around it was still the better game but now it's just boring and the devs hardly do much FIFA and PES I don't know much about only that some teams or whatever are exclusive to one game I think? Idk. Edited April 2, 2021 by Zello
Bigglo145
I am not going to buy another 2k until i get a ps5 but even before then the last 2k i got was 2k18 or 19 i think. 2k lacks tremendously though, they have gotten so lazy since 2k11. I think EA should revive their NBA streetz title.
Laker23
I'm a massive football fan but haven't purchased any FIFA or PES for many years. PES just feels lifeless and FIFA is so geared towards Ultimate Team which I couldn't care any less about. The last NBA game I bought was 2k17. I enjoyed it but mainly play Career mode, and that has become such an unbelievably tedious grind that I simply don't have the time anymore to bother with it. Too many games I want to play. TheSantader25
I haven't bought anything since 2017. That's the year that I finally drew the line and stopped myself from buying PES or FIFA until one of them did something notable again that would make me buy their games again and so far nothing has caught my eye. It's painful as a hardcore football fan but I have to save myself from all the face palms and time-wasting these games force upon me. I will look forward to what PES will do with their new engine next year but I'm not expecting much. If only a third competitor entered the scene... I think people would definitely appreciate that. It's a big investment for anybody that tries it but at the same time if they pull it right they can expect a huge profit. I also miss those over the top, arcade games like NBA Jam, NFL Blitz etc. The funny thing is I'm not even really a big sports guy. I don't watch NFL, NBA, FIFA etc typically, but I like playing the games. The older ones just have more charm and soul IMO even if they're dated. I remember the first time I played Madden which I think was Madden 2001 and it blew me away. I'm also a wrestling fan and love those old school WWF/WWE, WCW games etc. Now I've been playing my PS3/PS2 again I'm seriously tempted to just buy those games from the late 90s/early 2000s as they're dirt cheap and have more content than the new ones. I don't know why people bother to buy microtransactions in sports games since all that progress will only last you a year and then you have to start all over again when the new game comes out. 4 hours ago, Algonquin Assassin said: The funny thing is I'm not even really a big sports guy. Yeah I've had some fun with the games of sports that I don't really watch like Nascar. The old EA Nascar games Nascar Thunder 2004 especially was pretty much one of the best racing games I've ever played also that Nu metal soundtrack it had was awesome. Same with some of the older WWE titles wrestling and slamming people was fun. Edited April 8, 2021 by Zello Algonquin Assassin
Zello
Lmaoo I am not paying for this crap. Same game I'll wait for it to either have a huge ass price drop or when it comes to PS+. It makes matters worse when they got the nerve to charge $70 for the PS5 version and Xbox players can get it on gamepass for free. Testarossa
been playing FIFA 20 recently and it's honestly so stupid that if i want to have the new kits or the new squads i have to buy a whole new game, luckily it's on EA Play so I didn't spend any money on it, not like it would be worth much these days anyway. I wish they just made like a single game and charge you like maximum 15-20 dollars for the update or something, it's really idiotic.
