Ondr4H
Im not kidding, Im not playing any horror games because for me they are just plain stupid. You are expecting evil and demons and you get it, simple and boring. But RDR2 a western game about gunslingers? This game gives me heebie jeebies on daily basis. Thanks to my strange luck to witness most unsettling scenes, creepy strangers at night, Im nervous even more. And RDR2 realistic graphics are icing on cake. Sometimes even horse feel presence of something unnatural, stopping before some forests and creepy ambient music starts playing. Its not like you just slaying demons with you colt, but that presence of something...Something out there, you cannot take it or you cannot see it. That strange feel like something is watching you like in reality... This game did outstanding job at capturing this feel. Lemoyne outlaw
i totally agree. i dont play horror games either for the same reason you mentioned. but as you said a western does not usually have a horror vibe to it. the bayou is perfect for a scary movie. i remember the first time i swam in the water and a got bit by a gator i literally shouted and my heart was racing. and even the roanoke area is creepy. it had so much potential for undead nightmare 2. the original redemptions map was not very creepy. so with undead nightmare there were very few areas that were scary. but rdr2 is ripe with locations. just imagine fighting zombies in the swamp and a gator kills some zombies or attacks you. an undead gator sounds so cool. so yes this game has a lot of creepy elements to it. sadly rockstar just threw away so much potential. and its very sad. but even still i like to watch the scary movies people have made in rdr2. Cyper
I agree. I think precisely because it isn't a horror game it becomes more horrifying because you do not know what to expect. Set black level correctly (so that nights actually look dark - caves with zero light sources should be pitch dark), disable music, minimap, wanted level icon, subtitles, aim assist/lock on, music, and all other indicators other than health/stamina HUD for yourself and your horse. It will make the game a lot more tense. During the night visibility is reduced because there is no artificial lighning only the moonlight. You never know if an enemy is nearby because there is no indicators, nor any subtitles to tell what is being said or by who. With music disabled there is no warning for danger either. Walking though Bayo with only the lantern becomes really scary..you constantly have to look around and listen and when you see the flash its already to late... This gives me similar feelings like when I was exploring Back'o Beyond in GTA: San Andreas back in 2004-2005 lol. CryptReaperDorian
R* is actually pretty good at implementing horror elements into games that otherwise aren't horror titles. Red Dead Redemption 2 definitely takes the cake. Even GTA SA and GTA IV have some unsettling locations where nothing actually happens, but the community created myths based around them to create some looming fear (despite otherwise knowing they're simply myths). I think R* tried a bit too hard with GTA V, though. The Manhunt games were designed at least partially as horror games, and at least the first is kind of scary. A big part of this is because the enemies usually stand on equal or better footing than you. So, getting caught in a face-to-face encounter is generally not in your favor. Otherwise, yes, the setting and characters certainly are beyond unsettling.

And aliens few times, woo hoo really scary . But most scary thing is ocean for me, I have fear of water depths so this is for me really unsettling with strange sounds, sunken ships and structures. Jabalous
Many things in Redemption 2 sound, look and feel creepy and scary. Many areas are unsettling, especially during night time, and more disturbingly, in a foggy weather. Some of the night-time ambient animal sounds are disturbing on their own. The map also induces the feeling of isolation and loneliness, like when exploring New Austin in the night. The Tracker and Alexlecj
Alexlecj
Foggy nights surrounded by moonlight are really well done in this game. Today I was roaming around Little Creek River in Big Valley, and when riding towards the Grizzlies I was greeted by the growl of a ferocious bear. No way to visually locate it. I rode back like crazy to reach the safety of the valley. The Tracker
BigGoldberg
Doom for sure, especially the third episode. Resident Evil is also a nightmare for me.
Lemoyne outlaw
so yesterday i had some time to kill and i decided to just walk the bayou in the dark. all i had on me was my trusty semi auto pistol. i had some scary stuff happen. first off i rarely ever see alligators at night. so seeing their bright eyes in the dark was super creepy. then as im walking im in first person. and a goat or something hit me. it scared me so much because i never saw it. i got hit from behind. i was so mad and shocked at the same time. and then lastly when it was almost day. it started lightning all of a sudden. and the thunder was so loud. i even saw the lightning hit land not too far away. all of this just by walking around. rockstar is so good at this. and i really hope they continue to add creepy stuff in their games. Algonquin Assassin
I have to admit sometimes when playing RDR2 I don't go free roaming at night because some places legitimately creep me out. In saying that sometimes I wonder why R* have never made a fully fledged horror game. We've seen glimpses of it with Manhunt and Undead Nightmare, but they've never gone all in which is a shame because they do a wonderful job of creating creepy and unsettling atmospheres, locations etc that would be at home. My dream is a Silent Hill-esque game that relies on tension and suspense. Edward RDRIII and NightmanCometh96

hector savage
I definitely agree with this. There is a perfect amount of creepyness in the game that makes you feel tense,it is so enjoyable. My favorite thing to do is kinda immerse myself in and take a guard of camp with rest of gang members. Looking over the forest at night, taking in the sounds and atmosphere,it's just so good. Also, can't remember when was the last time i felt genuinely unsettled like when I was exploring the caves or exploring the swamp at night The Tracker
