Anime Guy
I am new to making skins and want to know which is the best software - *Autodesk 3ds Max *Blender or *GIMP
LeatherJacketSoldier
Many people use Blender, because it's free, but in my opinion the best one is 3DS Max. That being, if you can afford it on one way or another, if you know what I mean. Anime Guy
Menaced
GIMP is just an image editor used to create textures. It isn’t the same as 3DS Max or Blender which are used for modelling. I personally prefer 3DS Max because it’s what I know how to use but both applications are probably equally as capable for skin modding. Most people probably use Blender nowadays because it’s free so there’s probably more tutorials out there for you to use. Anime Guy
LUISDooM
I think the best one is 3DS Max, it can be tricky to use at first, but with some practice, it gets very intuitive. The bad thing is that it isn't free. Blender in other hand, is free. I once tried it, but never got around its controls/UI. Also, never found good tutorials for making skins with it compared with 3DS MAX. Maybe I hadn't looked for them hard enough GIMP is an image editor, great for editing and consolidating (combining multiple textures into one) textures. It's free too and a must have for skin making. Tut98
You can get 3ds Max indie now - this is listed at roughly $400/year. I'll be buying this when my student license expires this year. The Indie license is for individuals who earn less than $100K/year if I'm not mistaken. Perfect for modders eh?

I try to find free software whenever I see the chance. And I'm not that experienced at modding, but I think I can classify myself as a proper modder. guard3
Autodesk gives student licenses for free - no questions asked. But for modding purposes, older versions do the job just fine. Maverick512

It's annoying but, I've got enough funds to afford the indie version now. LeatherJacketSoldier
