Can't finish „Out of Comission“

Hey, so I decided for once to finish GTA IV and I'm stuck on „Out of Comission“ mission. I can get to to the helicopter but I always get shot down by an RPG no matter how I fly and I don't get to the island. When I get close to the boat wreckage it just speeds up and I can't keep up with it and I always get shot down there, no matter how close I fly to it. Any suggestions?

Getting shot down near the island is the part of the mission - you watch cutscene and then pursue Pegorino on foot

That's the thing, everytime I get shot down, I just fall into the water and mission is failed.

Top tip: although the game tells you to fly low you don't actually need to. You can fly high up out of range of the RPG, as long as you're not far behind - or in front of - the boat it's fine. It doesn't matter if Jacob can shoot at it or not and you don't need to "catch" it, just stay high up a bit behind the boat and follow it. When you get near the island, near the boat wreckage you mention, you're supposed to get hit by a rocket (it's scripted and unavoidable, and the boat is scripted to speed up there as well so don't worry about that either, just keep following and make sure the initial hit doesn't make you crash yourself into the water). You'll start going down and a cutscene will trigger and you'll move to the next part of the mission. So don't turn the game off or anything just because you get hit and start going down, assume all is OK unless it actually says you died/the mission failed. This all applies to the other ending as well btw, if you ever play it. 

 

Edit: I'm having a vague memory of sometimes having trouble with the being shot down and cutscene triggering in this ending. I think it's very important that you don't overtake the boat as you get close to the boat wreckage/island. Perhaps the safest way is to always stay a little behind it (but quite high up to avoid rockets), and as you get to near the wreckage come down a bit lower. If all else fails look up the mission being completed on youtube and copy it.

I tried flying low and high but every time I get shot down, the helicopter just dives right into the water and there's nothing I can do about it... I tried to do the same as in the video, in the video it looks like after getting shot down guy still has control over the helicopter wherever I don't.

I'm done with it... Tried a fix like 30fps lock, seemed to help a few people, didn't help me. I just uninstalled the game and watched the ending on Youtube...

The place you're describing getting shot down near the boat wreckage is where you're supposed to get shot down with the scripted rocket you can't avoid, so that's kind of weird. The only thing I can think is the initial hit of the rocket is making you fly yourself into the water before the cutscene triggers.

 

Before uninstalling the game I would've tried watching just that part on youtube and copying it but oh well.

I am also seeing this and cannot complete the mission no matter what. The helicopter always gets hit by a missile and explodes causing failure no matter if i stay behind the boat or go high up in the air. I am literally unable to complete the game. any suggestions? because I followed Youtube vids and nothing. I don't have the widespread bug with the jump and tapping either.
