Best way to play GTA IV on Xbox One?

My nephew wants to play GTA IV on Xbox One. I've only played it on Xbox 360 so I'm clueless about it. I heard the Xbox 360 disc has recently become backwards compatible so would it be best to buy that for it? Or can you download it? And are there advantages/disadvantages with either option? Any advice appreciated.

I don´t have a Xbox One but AFAIK they added backwards compatibility, the same applies in the Xbox Series X, but not by hardware itself, it´s emulated, I mean, you put a Xbox 360 disk inside the Xbox One (or Series X) and if it´s compatible with the list of backward games Microsoft provided, the console start downloading the game on your console hard drive/SSD, it´s like "the disk gives you a key to download the game", you don´t run the game on the physical format, you get a free key to download the digital version for the console. if you had the game bought on digital format on the Xbox 360 you just have to download it on your Xbox One/Series X because you have the license of the game on your Xbox Live account, I put here a video that explains the situation of what happens but with original Xbox games, that is the same with Xbox 360 games, and you don´t have to worry about not compatibility problems because GTA IV has backwards compatibility since 2017, as other R* games too, the list they provided on their Newswire for Xbox Series X applies the same for Xbox One. And about performance, the game runs so much better on Xbox One than in Xbox 360, they didn´t released a 4K patch like with RDR1 in Xbox One X but it runs better and it looks good.

Thanks! So is there any point in buying a 360 disc? Or can he just buy a download from the microsoft store? 

 

He said when he went to the store on his Xbox One to try and buy it, it was unavailable. But maybe he was mistaken.

Mmm...strange, even they put on sale R* Xbox 360 games in 2021 because of the backwards compatibility stuff, because in PS3 they don't make sales no more because there is no backwards compatibility on PS4/5 with PS3 games, that's why gladly Microsoft still cares of Xbox 360 games offers because of the backwards compatibility. If you want a disk it depends if you like physical games like me, but you will have to count that GTA IV physical was discontinued I guess, as all the Xbox 360 games production, so it would be a second hand game of course if you want it physically, I prefer physical games but for example when I was going to buy RDR1 and GTA IV for my PS3 a few years ago they were discontinued so I had to buy them on the PS Store because I prefer first hand games, but that's my own opinion, if you don't care about that, you can buy it on disk, but it's on the Xbox Store as I have found on Google...strange that he couldn't find it, I share the link of the US store, I changed the location from Spain to USA, I couldn't found UK but I guess it will be the same, in Spain was available too, if you check the link it will ask you to change location to your store country like asked to change to the Spain store to me when I checked the USA store. Anyway, now is not on sale but a month ago they made a R* mega sale on the microsoft store and it was available for just 6€ as far as I remember...you can wait for another offer or just buy it if you can't wait

Edit: I saw I could buy a disc in good condition with good reviews on amazon for less than £5 so I've just bought that. Haven't been able to see him because of lockdown so it'll be nice to send him a surprise gift. Cheers!
