Digital is convenient, but PlayStation store charging £70 for games when the disc games can be 15% lower is a big no from me.

I lent my original copy of Vice City to my neighbour in 2003 and never got it back. They're my games. I will never allow anyone to borrow a game. And I don't want to sell games, so...

Rockstar games in particular as worth getting both digital and disc, just for the map.

It's a shame almost no one does these things anymore.

Now we just get a disc, not even an instruction manual.

I still have the original VC manual and regularly check it out. The tourist guide format was the most creative idea for a manual.

(Runner up would be Saints Row 1 manual. Not gonna spoil it for you but it's written by a story character, basically from his POV. Amazing stuff)

Hope they include the map on Vi.

So true. I was fairly disappointed with GTA IV when it came out, the booklet was, let's be fair, a waste of paper. I thought it was maybe a one off, new engine, new challenges, physics and graphics take priority, all that.

Then came GTA V, and I realised that R* aren't going to bother with being creative ever again.

I remember sitting on the floor of my bedroom in my underwear just before bed, reading the SA tourist guide under the light of a small desk lamp. I was going to be late for the school in the morning, but I didn't care.

Last year I had a moan about how bad GTA 5 is, and how I lost faith in R*, when another member of the forums mentioned how amazing RDR2 was - and I was so impressed by what they said that I thought "What the heck, I'm going to go on-line and buy one now". Turns out there isn't even a physical version. I mean, why even bother? Naturally, I didn't buy it - and have no intention of doing it. A pen drive and shipping would have set R* back by £5, hardly a deal breaker for them (and I would gladly cover these costs if the game was worth it), but it just shows that they don't care about the player experience and all that, they just want to milk the consumer for their £££. Whatever happened to the R* of the bygone days?

Fair enough, over the years my views and opinions on the game content have changed, I used to like things which I don't care about now - and so do many other gamers; but I doubt anyone has grown cold to the idea of owing a beautifully designed game guide in a hard plastic box with film wrapping that takes days to rip off and the DVD that won't come out because of that stupid little ridge at the bottom that stops you from grabbing it.

I have good news and bad news

a good news is that re3/reVC devs successfully countered DMCA claims as Kotaku reports

a bad news is that the reports can outright kill the project as one of its devs states:

We KNEW Take-Two was going to file against it regardless (and btw, GTA3 and Vice City were fully complete), the idea was on how we'd do things right and secure ourselves legally with a massive counter document prepared by an actual law firm which means Take-Two would have to go hard and put the money in to prove their claims. But sure, we're "dumb" for wanting to cover our asses and make sure this project could return in a secure manner. 😛

edit: And since a lot of websites keep saying this, Theo never contributed to the project at all, he's a developer yes, but he's not one of the team here, he just forked it and then submitted a basic counter.

The rights belong to T2, so they will definitely win any legal action.
If you are doing something for the community you could simply not take credit for the work and drop the files on the internet, that would spread quickly and no one would ever find out who did it, T2 would not be able to sue anyone and there would be no way to remove the files from the internet after they were spread as was done by many Nintendo fans who created versions of their games.

It was on the internet for nearly a year, the team only announced it after GTA3 and VC were complete, which boosted the amount of people knowing about it and kick-started a few ports. If you look you'll find archives of the project all around so I'm unsure why you're angry or blaming us. We're just standing up for fair use policy.

If it turns out Rockstar is working on potential remasters, that would be the "ugly news" section of this whole situation.

If Rockstar/Take-Two threw away money to acquire a whole-ass studio with over 40 devs to work on potential remasters in collaboration with Rockstar studios, then how would that project be more beneficial to Take-Two than this?

Are you comparing full-time paid game developers with studios, tons of tools, teams of dozens of developers helping each other to
freelancer modders that most don't make a penny out of their mods and just work to make repetitive games enjoyable and less boring for the public for free in most cases?

If you do then you have to be joking...

I still have doubts that these "remasters" even exist and if they do, code wise they'd be a wide birth away from the original, just the functions of RenderWare vs RAGE alone means like practically most of the code is worthless. On the flipside, if they do exist, we'd at least hope whoever is working on them WOULD take a peak at what the team has done because there's a load of little fixes and broken code corrections in the re project, even down to things like certain peds having unused lines due to a glitch!

Did Take-Two care about this team of freelancer modders when they came swinging their DMCA takedown notice?

Don't get me wrong, I myself hope Take-Two won't pursue legal action against this project. Yet the belief that Take-Two would have to hit hard and put money on the line to pursue legal action, but what if they already did put money on the line with the acquisition? If that turns out to be the case, it's highly likely they would pursue legal action so that the money that went into acquiring a studio won't go to waste. Heck knowing Take-Two, they would claim this project poses as financial risk in the case that potential remasters are under development.

Nice. It would be great if, in the case such remasters exist, the devs collaborate with you guys, similarly to how CDPR collaborated with a Witcher 3 modder. But you never know what could happen with Take-Two and their aggressive tactics against mods.

Jeez... Fan-Made mods? I don't wanna know what they'd come up with. Next thing you know we'll no longer need to type in Chittychittybangbang for flying vehicles.

of course they will destroy the project

the reason of their attack is far simpler - the older games would pull back people from GTAO

(having cold feet from Hot Coffee is a factor as well)

They really won't.

The GTAO audience doesn't care about the older games. The GTAO audience cares about the next GTAO update.

This project could only raise interest in these old games. What would Rockstar do would be way superior to this, no doubt about that.

Good question is, how much they would like to improve it graphics wise? They have to be very careful here because once they will make one step too far in any area they will have to remake literally whole game.

I am very curious about this too. The games look very dated in many aspects, so I expect some substantial graphical updates, but at the same time I believe they will preserve the cartoon-ish feel of the games. What I am most curious about is, for example, how they're going to transfer the dark blue-ish filter III has. There are countless of mods that try to improve the graphical aspects of these games, but I never really saw one that truly preserves the feel of the original games. More often than not it ends up looking very odd.
