Companion System (An Expansion of the RPG Elements)

Don't know if this is supposed to go in the Wishlist thread, or if it justifies it's own thread.

Since San Andreas R* have toyed with RPG mechanics in their games, we saw them make a return in both GTA V and RDR2.

Expanding on the RPG elements beyond basic health/stat upgrades, how would we feel about a companion system similar to Fallout/The Elder Scrolls? Where you select a member of for example, your gang, and take them out with you while you explore or do side-missions/main missions. They could be involved and have their own thoughts on characters and locations you find throughout the world.

San Andreas had a very light gang recruitment system where CJ could recruit Grove Street members to follow him until they died or were dismissed.

Personally I think it could be done right, if they mix the friend hanging out mechanic from IV/V with the unused gang recruitment from RDR2, it might just be good enough.

Or do you think RPG mechanics should stay away from Rockstar games?

I don't know about those games you mentioned, but Far Cry 5 had a cool mechanic concerning a companion system.

You do a mission which is related to the character and then you unlock that person / animal. That would be an interesting idea in Grand Theft Auto games.

Would be cool addition if the A.I actually helps you in combat.

It depends how it's done, really. It felt like RDR2 had some sort of scripted companion character in almost every mission and it got really irritating after awhile. They made every mission feel like it was still in the tutorial section the way they walked us through every stage of every mission. I feel like it'd be even more annoying having someone following me around all the time in free roam and pointing out all the potential opportunities around the map.

I think I'd prefer the silent thugs of San Andreas but I'm not sure they'd add much. It can look cool to have a posse following you around but I can't think of many situations in a GTA where I really felt like I needed the extra help. Apart from maybe some of the grindier aspects of online.

I'm sure there's a balance somewhere, though, and I think Rockstar could find it if they really wanted to. Ubisoft does this pretty well sometimes. Americana already mentioned Far Cry 5 and I agree that that worked pretty well. I also really liked the four man team aspect of Ghost Recon Wildlands.

So, yeah. Depends how it's implemented I guess.

There is a reason it was left out of RDR2 and I'm going to sit back and trust that it was probably the right choice.

How I wish to free roam with Charles, Javier, Bill, Sadie, John. It should have been awesome to camp, hunt, explore, ride with those guys.

You can use the companion glitch, It's better than nothing I guess.

Saints Row got this pretty well.

Not to mention they actually pickup BETTER guns off the ground unlike any rockstar game.
