Gold is a noble metal, thus it cannot be dissolved in regular acids, corrode by exposure to oxygen or react with your body and mess up your biochemistry.

However, elemental gold can be dissolved in aqua regia, a mixture of nitric acid and hydrochloric acid by the molar ratio of 1:3, which will make it into chloroauric acid and various types of gold(x)chlorides. Wanna rob jewelry? Dissolve the gold and deposit the auric salts, then refine them back to the elemental metal, smelt it into bars and sell it.

Archduke Franz Ferdinand assassination caused WW1, and his car's plate number "A III 118" was believed to be Armistice 11/11/18. Remember that WW1 ended on November 11 1918 and Armistice means agreeing to stop wars

Russia has 11 time zones, so on one end of the country it could be 7 AM and on the other, 6 PM.

China despite its size on the other hand has one time zone for the entire country.

Liberty City Executioner

Oh, this definitely sounds like my kind of thread! :D

Abraham Lincoln and Charles Darwin were both born on the same day, which was February 12, 1809.

Robert E. Lee was born exactly two years before Edgar Allan Poe. Robert E. Lee was born January 19, 1807 while Edgar Allan Poe was born January 19, 1809.

Christmas and Easter actually DID originate as pagan holidays celebrating winter solstice and spring equinox.

Jesus Christ was actually more likely born in the spring (sometime between March 20 and June 20) and resurrected in the autumn (between September 20 and December 20).

The Mt Rushmore National Monument is built on land within the Black Hills sacred to native American tribes which originally formed the Great Sioux Reservation but was subsequently seized back by the US government when gold was discovered. The monument is often considered disappointing, particularly by overseas visitors who have only ever seen cropped close-up photographs of it, because it's both extremely far away from the viewing platform and actually rather small.

Whilst none of the approximately 400 workers died whilst carving the monument, around a dozen (3%) later died of silicosis due to the effects of inhaling granite dust.

US President Andrew Jackson owned a pet parrot. This parrot attended the former president's funeral but eventually had to be removed for 'excessive swearing'.

Quote

The Rev. Norment goes on to report that the presidential parrot was “excited by the multitude and … let loose perfect gusts of ‘cuss words.’” People were “horrified and awed at the bird’s lack of reverence.”

A tax court in the Republic of Ireland determined that Subway sandwich bread is technically not bread at all but cake, and therefore not a tax-exempt foodstuff. This determination was made because the total content of sugar in Subway bread is more than 2g per 100g of flour; in actuality Subway bread contains around 10g per 100g. McDonald's Big Mac buns have also fallen foul of the same legislation.

No this is not an image from a Fallout playthrough but it's as of now the only known image of the surface of another planet's moon, Saturn's moon Titan as captured by the Cassini-Huygens probe on Jan 14, 2005.

Liberty City Executioner

Oregon was founded on Valentine’s Day of 1859.

Nevada was founded on Halloween of 1864. Much like Oregon, it was a Union state during the American Civil War. It was also the last state to be founded during the American Civil War.

I share the same birthday as Thomas Jefferson (April 13th).

Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, Robert Livingston, and Roger Sherman all assisted Thomas Jefferson in writing the Declaration of Independence.

I say this as an American who still loves my country but we are not very original as a people. Our land belongs to the Native Americans, our democracy came from Ancient Greece, our alphabet came from Ancient Rome, our numbers came from the Arabs, our hamburgers and hotdogs (originally known as Frankfurters) came from Germany (Hamburg and Frankfurt respectively to be exact), and our language came from England.

John Locke and Thomas Hobbes were two very influential British philosophers. They influenced the Founding Fathers as well as Abraham Lincoln and possibly many other great American historical icons.

When blood is in your body, it is actually a bluish color. It turns red when it leaves your body because oxygen hits.

You may think you see color in your dreams. However, they are actually in black and white. That’s because of where they are in your brain.

Almost all commercially available bananas are sterile clones of each other from one of two or three main cultivars. Wild bananas bear almost no resemblance to the ones you see in the supermarket- green when ripe, short, lacking a curve and full of seeds.

The Central African Republic once had an emperor who spent 1/4th of his country GDP on the coronation ceremony alone. He invited 2500 foreign guests, only 600 attended.

There is a storm in Jupiter that is happening right now since 200 years ago, sorry if I'm wrong

This brings me to something I wanted to mention, but forgot, so thank you for reminding me.

I love the idea of this topic, really I do, but if we're going to share facts can we at least be a little confident in our suggestions, and maybe even provide a source? I know, I know, it sucks all the fun out of it but we're not twisting Snapple bottle caps here. Even the most outlandish and bizarre fact can be proven right or wrong online. I don't want to have to read a fact, doubt it, look it up, see it's wrong and then spend a good chunk of my evening wondering whether it's even worth it to call somebody out on it. I'll give you a hint - it's never worth it. Let's all make it worth it by providing a source for the facts that are either:

i) so amazing they're almost unbelievable.

ii) pulled out from a corner of your brain but you're sure it's okay, because your uncle's boyfriend Brian told you and he never lies.

I'll even give you an example - horses can't vomit due to a strong lower esophageal sphincter muscle that acts almost like a one way valve.

Far be it from me to piggy back on your fact but I've long since been interested in space. Jupiter's "Big Red Spot" has been going nuts for at least 150 years but it's thought to have been first observed way back in 1665. There's some contest over whether or not this was indeed the same storm, but it's getting on a bit regardless. Recently, its mass has actually begun to shrink. At some point in the 1970s, it was speculated that at least three of our own planet could fit (un)comfortably inside it. As of 2012, that had dwindled to barely one Earth. Fragments have been seen of the storm and some slight breaks, but this is by no means an indication the storm is dying.

If you ever want to kill an afternoon or two, get stuck in space. It's great.
