Is GTA 5 better on PS3 than Next Gen/PC?

Recommended Posts

I've played both PS3(Old gen) version and PC version. Framerate, texture resolution, and things like that are all better on new gen versions.

However, I felt like overall color aesthetic is a bit worse on next gen versions. In old gen, Los Santos looked very warm and felt more like California. In new gen, it looks a lot colder. Take a look at the picture below.

I love both version, but I kinda miss the feeling of GTA 5 on old gen.

Let me know your thoughts on the difference!

and please don't be angry at me XD i just want to hear opinions

Mmm...yeah I agree with you in that, that´s something I noticed when I changed from PS3 to PC, yeah I gained in FPS, now 60 in PC, view distance is so way better, better defined textures....but the brightness of the game it looks more cold yeah, I noticed that in my first time on PC like "Wow this looks like less...colorful, it looks more cold than in PS3/Xbox 360"

It´s ok man!!, it´s good to hear new ideas or opinions when they have sense and are well explained like yours, I never looked so much into that idea but now I will look more into that, sometimes I play on my PS3 for the old memories and nostalgia, maybe I should compare my PC and PS3 versions together if I plan to play one day again on PS3

If you're on PC then you can download the timecycs from the last gen versions to get that atmosphere back, it actually has better overall draw distance as the fog isn't as heavy (that's what's causing that cold look).

Thank you! I hope Rockstar to bring back the atmosphere in PS5 version so we can play in it with higher framerate. I remember sending my screenshot of PS3 GTA 5 to my friend who only played PC version. I didn't tell him about its platform but he said that its color is beautiful and asked me whether I used additional graphics patch. Tell me if you get the result on the comparison someday!

Thanks for kindness :D

I usually played PS3/360 Versions more, because the New Gen versions looked colorless. Plus the cancerous Online mode in the New Gen version. (Sorry if I "Unnecessarily" mentioned Online here.)

The 8th gen versions hurt my eyes when I play them. They're more crisp and the draw distance is phenomenal, but the colors suck, they were way overzealous with lighting and contrast, and they decided to smear everything with a vaseline filter. There's no happy middleground brightness setting either, when you get things looking good for daytime, nighttime is muddy and crushed, then if you crank up the brightness a little to get nighttime looking good, daytime is overexposed and painful to look at. Rockstar was trying so hard to make these versions look like a movie they forget to make sure you could stand to look at it while playing.

PS3 looks better to me. It’s the reason why I only play this version (otherwise I might play next gen with mods on PC, but it’s still not the same).

The atmosphere and overall graphics are always best on the lead console. This is true for IV and SA especially.

I, too, think the game looks "better" on old-gen. It's got a more authentic GTA feel to it. I still play GTA on XB360 (I'd play it on PS3 but my controller is messed up).

It's not just the timecycle (colors that you mentioned), I like the distant lights better, I like the trees, bushes and other vegetations better. I also think that the occlusion is better than next-gen at times. I made a comparison video long ago:

This was taken during the yoga mission. This mission sets the time and weather so they're exactly the same.

If you can't decide which one is which: the one with fewer leaves behind Michael, on the window or wall, is the last-gen version.

I honestly think the old-gen version has better facial shadows or occlusion. Apart from resolution, last gen peds look better.

The one on the left side is next-gen. (I know the weather and time is different but still, last-gen faces look better regardless)

Can you see the blue horizontal lines? They're all over the place. The game's full of this. I  think it's overused and it looks like garbage. Little kids do love colorful and shiny stuff, though. In all honesty, Rockstar's target audience is now little kids with wealthy parents that they can manipulate into buying Shark Cards. This is also why you see flying cars and bikes and all this futuristic BS in GTA Online. Not to mention GTA Online is an advertisement paradise. As soon as you step foot into GTA Online you're bombarded with phone calls and messages, buy this buy that. Pathetic. The game went from a masterpiece (2013-4) to a piece of sh*t (2014 and onwards).

It'll be weird to keep referring to the PS3/360 version as last gen and the PS4/Xbox One/PC version as the current gen version seeing as they're now the last-last gen version and last gen version respectively, and there's a current gen version coming for the PS5.

Speaking as a lifelong fan of the series (I started with GTA2 way back in 1999/2000 as a wee lad), to me the enhanced version is an improvement over the original version in nearly every way. I personally love the colors, the in-game depth of field effects (the "vaseline filter", which you can turn off in the settings), the improved draw distance/textures, the additional details added to the world itself, such as the animated LED sign on top of the Badger Building, the blue lights in the Rockford Plaza tunnel, the blue and pink lights under the Elgin Ave underpass on the Del Perro Fwy, etc. Not to mention the much improved traffic and pedestrian density, vegetation, and my two favorite additions: the expanded soundtrack and Director Mode. And there's plenty more that I'm forgetting.

All in all, after switching from the 360 version to the PS4 version, there's no way I could ever go back.

I recall firing up the PS3 version a year or two ago just to check it. I played some singleplayer and Online, and the only thing I noticed was the lack of first person. The games look very similar, to the point where you need direct comparisons to really see a difference. And then there are the graphical and functional downgrades on the PS4/Xbox One/PC versions which really are sad. To be honest, I think the current version of the game is somewhat ugly. I wished they'd kept updating the 360/PS3 versions for a little bit longer...

Hopefully GTA5 PS5 will fix a lot of the issues the game has, but I wouldn't get my hopes up. Rockstar have driven both GTA5 and GTA Online into the ground in the name of profit. No wonder Sam Houser left.

I got Saints Row The Third Remastered a few weeks ago, and I realised then that GTA now is Saints Row without the story. And I am fully aware I will now be hunted down and banned for saying that.

I am enjoying playing GTA 5 on my PS3, but i still wanted the PC Version of it

But my computer doesn't had good PC Specs that can fit for GTA 5, plus, my computer is getting old

I can't buy a gaming computer, i only had $500 in my pocket and I only beg money from my grandma

anyway, Enhanced Version is the best because you can acces 1st person view

The main difference I remember from Old gen is that the map tends to not fully load at times (like, invisible roads n sh*t) and sometimes the frame rate tanks due to this (even the game freezes). This is an issue I used to experience since day 1 in Single Player (in Online it's much much worse). Not sure if it's my PS3 or that the game is just too demanding. I remember this issue becoming worse with each update R* released. I wonder if it's possible to roll back to the very first version of the game somehow? But meh I'm too lazy.

I think it depends on what state your hard drive is in. I've only had that happen on PS3 and when I switched to an SSD, I stopped getting the missing textures bug, even in Online.

I was playing the PS3 version recently and visually it still holds up, even at 1280x720.

While playing online It felt somewhat peaceful compared to new gen versions and then I realized the old gen doesn't have any Oppressor's.

Adding a SSD to a PS3 is game changing, especially for open world games and games with large maps in general (e.g. Battlefield).

I haven’t played the PS3 version since about 2014, but I did play the 360 version a few weeks back and it hasn’t aged that well at all IMO.

Always said that GTA V would age faster compared to other R* titles on the same hardware because they didn’t have a next gen version hoisting them. After playing GTA V on PS4 going back to an older generation version is quite jarring.

The differences aren’t quite on the same level as a remake/remaster obviously, but there’s just enough for it to be noticeable the point I see no reason why the last gen version of GTA V would be better in any significant capacity.

I wish they add some options to recreate the old-gen color. I agree they were trying too hard to make it look like a movie.

I really agree. Especially for GTA SA. Next-gen version of GTA V isn't that bad although its color is worse than last-gen (in my opinion), but the PC version of GTA SA is really bad compare to PS2.

Thanks for the comparison video! Although they did a great job porting the game to next-gen and PC, I think it wasn't perfect. That kind of flare in the screenshot is a bit annoying too. I love GTA Online, but i completely agree it's an advertisement paradise. All I do in GTA Online is driving around the city with my cheap cars.

In my opinion, current versions looks like looks good, but its overall art style is ruined. I think this is true because GTA V is originally designed for old-gen's art style and they changed it on new-gen

I think the optimization of last-gen of GTA V is out of this world. PS3 has 256MB ram (except vram) and it runs without significant problem. however it requires at least 4GB in PC version.

My pc wsn't that good so Invisible road problem was worse than PS3 version XD Thanks for the opinion!

They did a good job compare to GTA SA's PC porting, but i feel next-gen GTA V is a bit ugly. It has some better technical points, but I think they failed in maintaining the art style, which is more important in my opinion.

I've played GTA 5's story twice now and I still can't remember much of it. I can remember quite a bit of The Ballad Of Gay Tony in comparison (it's probably my favourite GTA game). Saints Row has always been considered to have a worse story than GTA but Saints Row The Third's story was so much more memorable than GTA 5's, and its ending was a million times more significant than GTA 5's.
