GTA IV General Chat

Now that Rockstar has added RDR1 to GTA+, I'm even more confident about GTA4 being released for PS4/PS5 and Switch later this year, which obviously will be added to GTA+ a few months after just the same, giving more value to the subscription.

I copied this from my post in "GTA Online General Chat", as I thought it would be relevant here too.

This trailer will be 17 years old tomorrow!

Still a masterpiece of a trailer! So crazy going from 3D era GTAs to this, it's pure art. I found it interesting to check out the film/music piece that inspired it too:

Damn. I always loved his enthusiastic personality. Rest in peace, Mister Cee.

What exactly is the difference between high vs very high shadow quality? Very high seems to have a big performance hit on older cards. I read somewhere that very high quality shadows have much higher resolution, is that the only difference?

Wasn’t too sure where else to put this, but after 15 years and so many playthroughs I think I’ve finally that point with GTA IV where I’m officially burnt out.

I’ve noticed that the last couple times I’ve tried to start a new save and just haven’t had any motivation to keep playing it. To be fair it’s not just GTA IV, but the series in general.

I think with GTA IV I’ll put it on ice for a year or two and come back after some time away. Honestly since 2008 I’ve probably only left it for a couple of months at time. I’m pretty sure I’ve done about 16 playthroughs or something like that so the point had to be broken sometime I guess.

Still love GTA IV of course, but yeah. For the time being it’s off into the sunset.

I feel exactly the same.  I started another playthrough of The Lost and Damned, and after a few missions I just stopped playing it.  I felt I was no longer connected with it.  It felt strange to be honest.

I think I have moved on from it.  Maybe I will change my mind, but if I don't, I will always have fond memories of my time in Liberty City.

You guys have described the exact same thing I had when I did a playthrough of TLAD. The exact same feelings...
Now I occasionally drop into the game to drive around and do some vigilante / gang wars / drug wars but I don't touch the plot any longer. I believe it's best I left it like that for some time until I really feel a desire to play it again.

i have been replaying gta 4 and its episodes lately. and my god it just brings back all the nostalgia. i would say this trio is combined to be the second best video game. its 2024 but a game made in 2008 is still miles ahead of pretty much any game that comes out. it's an embarrassment to all the other triple A studios. it still has an amazing story filled with some of the best characters in any form of media. the gameplay is still so much fun. niko is still the best gta protagonist. (i wish he could come back in gta 6. but we all know that's highly unlikely.)

the episodes are the best dlc that has ever been made. it's a crime that rockstar hasn't made any for gta 5 or rdr2. i don't have xbox live anymore. but i know gta 4 had an amazing multiplayer. i would easily rather go back to that version of multiplayer instead of gta online. i can't believe it's been 16 years. i have no doubt that gta 6 will be great. but it's sad to think rockstar will never go back to doing things the way they used to. at the very least they need to bring it to the ps4/5.

Very High shadow maps are rendered 4096x4096 and downscaled back to 2048x2048 on a vanilla game. If you use FusionFix, you have an option that can make them render raw (i.e 4096x4096 without the useless(?) downscale, which I think also makes them a bit more demanding than vanilla)

The other options, I think they go as follows:

High - 2048x2048 shadow map downscaled back to 1024x1024

Medium - 1024x1024 shadow map downscaled back to 512x512

Low - 512x512 shadow map downscaled back to 256x256

The differences on a vanilla game between all of these options are pretty apparent.

If FusionFix is used with it's FixCascadedShadowMapResolution option, the differences between High and Very High are very minimal on the other hand (Shadow cascades will look a bit worse and more blocky on High compared to Very High, but Very High isn't a whole lot better either way in this regard...)

Very High shadows have always been very demanding, especially on AMD GPUs (even new ones; I'm on an RX 6700 and they take away exactly half of the framerate, i.e from 160 High back to 80ish Very High), so I'd advise using High for better frames and power consumption.

Well said, yokel. Replaying this game right now with a lot of lore-friendly mods and it's been basically the best GTA experience in the series for me. Like RDR2 this game has a certain weight and learning curve to it, which adds a lot to the gameplay. It isn't flawless, specially the PC port, but its high points are truly legendary

So GTA IV turns sixteen today (29th of April).

I've been playing it for ten years, but how many of you bought the game at launch?

I got the special edition on PS3 at launch.🙂

Since then I mostly just play the 360 version via BC on my Series X.

I do hope at the very it gets a RDR style port to be able to play it on Switch, PS4 and PS5 if no remaster is on the cards because I’d buy it again for sure. Funnily enough even after all these years I’ve still never played it on PC though.

Anyway happy 16th birthday GTA IV.🎉🎉🎉
