Sleep mode is a godsend, instead of being forced to complete the final mission when you keep failing, just turn on sleep mode and there you go you can explore Liberty. Only issue is it even blocks messages so you can't do Stevie's car thefts I wanted to complete those...

Funny thing is if I remember correctly the Dwayne Playboy subplot isn't technically mandatory to complete the story, I think you can do that part even after finishing the final mission(?) so in that case Niko can actually just ignore them heh, though thinking about it once you start Holland Play I think you can't really avoid making that decision so yeah once you know they want you to go after the other you can't avoid it...

Quite a weird feeling to realize that GTA IV has turned into a full-blown period piece over the years.. New York is an entirely different universe now, a place so much different from what is portrayed in the game. Wow, 13 years...

Here's a mindf*ck: in 3 years, GTA IV's time period will be 16 years ago, the same gap between 2002 and 1986, when Vice City was released/set. And San Andreas was released in 2004, set in 1992, so GTA IV's time is already older than that was when SA was released. Crazy how time flies.

So I started my latest playthrough a couple of weeks ago, with the ambitious goal of trying to get 100% before Thursday, when the trilogy launches. I've just wrapped up Stevie's car deliveries, which means I'm at 95% and only have the stunt jumps and the pigeons left to do. I don't have time to play many hours a day, so I've accepted I will not be able to finish it by Thursday, but I'm having such a great time with it that I'm going to finish my 100% before I start the trilogy. When I think about it, there's no rush to start the trilogy day 1 - I think I can have all the stunt jumps and pigeons finished by the end of this weekend at the latest if I play every evening :). This will actually be the first time I've done the pigeons, I've 100%'d every 3D era + GTA V, but for some reason I never got round to it in IV. I'm kinda dreading it, but I think I will aim for 50 per day.

so i managed to find time to play iv in a gaming cafe while i'm still in college and i gotta say it's somehow more entertaining than v and on par with vice city and san andreas when it comes to pure gameplay immersion.

yet i have a question: as i was a passenger in cab and attempted to shoot from passenger seat i noticed that i actually could aim but i didnt dare to shoot bc my time ran out after paying for 1 hour to play on pc; so im wondering: can you actually shoot from taxi as passenger and what happens? does driver get scared? will i bail out? i mean i didnt see any such videos on yt and it's weird to me

Word of warning that the pigeons are genuinely extremely annoying and a slog to get through, mostly because almost every time you shoot one you get a wanted level (plus watch out in areas with lots of gang activity). This makes it take significantly longer than you might expect. If you follow a guide, have patience and find something to enjoy about it (eg visiting different parts of the city to get them or the unexpected results you can get from firing a weapon with police or gangs nearby) it's ok, but I wouldn't stress to get it done within a time limit. Glad you're enjoying it though! It's a shame they had to put the worst collectible ever in there but at least almost every other 100% task is fun.

Oh christ lol, I knew it would be a pain, but I didn't anticipate having to lose a wanted level every time I shot one. IV needs a silenced sniper and pistol eh.

 

I was thinking 'how hard can it be, SA had 250 collectibles, and I've 100%d that game 3 or 4 times', but those ones are at least relaxing because you don't need to engage in any combat.

 

I will see how I get on with the pigeons, I will just listen to podcasts and chill while I'm doing it. If it sucks that bad, I guess I can always give up, but I think I'm too stubborn to fall at the final hurdle after completing everything else lol. Thanks for the heads up.

Pressing the aim + shoot button just once will only cause Niko to break the glass with his elbow and the driver will allow that. But if you press again and shoot he'll get scared and stop the cab and run away. So yeah he can shoot but it'll be from a stopped cab with no driver.

 

HOWEVER if you get Roman's friendship percentage up enough that he offers you free cab rides by calling him (from his cab company with an amusing driver called Mohammed) it's a different story. Mohammed will let you shoot from his cab all you want and doesn't even care if you get a wanted level.

No problem! You don't get a wanted level every single time but firing a weapon always carries a high risk of that so yeah. You don't have to do them all at once - just make sure you keep track of which ones you've done. Having to visit 200 locations again to check isn't good haha.

Lmao that's legendary, I had no idea - I never used Roman's taxi tbh, it's so easy and cheap to find regular ones. Ima have to try that.

I knocked out the stunt jumps this evening.. all that's left is those pesky pigeons - my hunt begins tomorrow.. it won't be fun but I've gone too far to turn back lmao, I'll let you know how I get on. I've played through GTA IV many times, but this is the first time I'm bothering with all the mundane tasks.

Yeah you can have some fun getting a wanted level with him driving. You can use him as a getaway driver in some missions as well (since he doesn't mind a wanted level). I like to call for him before leaving the abandoned hospital in The Snow Storm, then he's waiting in the parking lot after you get out and you can just run past the cops, jump in and skip the trip to near where you'll be meeting Jacob lol.

Got my 100% today, 2 hours before the trilogy officially launches on all platforms loll, challenge complete. San Andreas usually takes me around 40 hours to 100%, it's interesting this was very similar despite the activities and map being very different. Pigeons weren't as bad as I expected, I did it in 2 sittings. I figured I was averaging around 2 minutes per pigeon, so it was about 3 hours per session, 6 hours in total for that. Glad to have finally 100%'d this after many years lol. Now I can say I've 100%'d every 3D era and HD era GTA game. 

 

One thing I don't understand, is why the 100% achievement on Steam is more common than many of the activities required to reach it? Makes no sense to me lol.

 

Here's the top part of my stat sheet, I didn't reload at all throughout the playthrough, so the deaths are my actual total, and I managed to avoid being busted which is nice. Only 1 of the deaths occurred during the story, and it wasn't even in combat lol - I was moving up a staircase in one of those apartment blocks for a mission and I accidentally fell down like 10+ flights of stairs. 1 death was doing police work, I was shooting a gang from my car and they blew my vehicle up with me inside it. 1 death was a huge stunt jump fail. And the remaining death was getting a pigeon on a rooftop, I accidentally jumped off a ledge instead of hitting Y (xbox controller) to get on the ladder, sending me plummeting to my death. All the mission failures were stupid things like spooking a tail, killing someone I was only supposed to follow, things like that, not deaths except for that one where I fell down the stairs.

 

Edit: shout out to GTA Series Videos, his/their guides for the pigeons and stunt jumps saved me a lot of hassle

Take Two issued takedown notices to LibertyCity based mods including a fan remake of GTA Advance in GTA III and a TLaD save file of all things lol. 

 

Bizarre stuff. This could mean that a GTA IV remaster is around the corner possibly. 

 

IV still feels rather newish to me but it will still be interesting if this happens, PS5 users will get to play this game in some capacity I suppose

 

Given how passionate the IV fanbase is, if they were to mess up these possible remasters, the furore over the trilogy remasters will be like nothing methinks. 

 

Takedowns were needless I think, don't see how an Advance remake on III or a save file harms their revenue or whatever.

It would be interesting to see which direction they would go with this. I think all it would really benefit from is being up-res'd and maybe an improved lighting system. It's surprising how well the game holds up tbh.

Please don't. They ruined the atmosphere of III, imagine what they would do with IV. The dirty feeling of Liberty City was a huge part of the game.

Played through the entire TLAD story today for the first time since 2009, very nostalgic experience. I was a 360 user back then so we got it first, it brought back all the memories of my old crew and people I used to play online with. We were all so hyped and spent a lot of time online playing around with the new weapons and messing around with the new bike physics.

 

In fact it reminded me that one of my friends made a lil biking stunt video of us, I'll link it below. The stunts ain't crazy, I remember he wanted it to be grounded, anyway, huge nostalgia trip playing through this DLC again. I really miss those times, I don't speak to any of those guys I used to play with, we just fell out of touch over the years.

 

It's funny, I was 14 back in '09, and I remember I thought all the characters in TLAD were so badass and cool - I was big into Sons Of Anarchy at the time, and this DLC was just perfect. Now playing at 26, I feel like their whole philosophy is kinda cringe and immature lol. Still, some awesome missions and I think the highlight is the new weapons.

 

This mission was a particular highlight, it's both a turning point in the story, and offers a really cool level design that I enjoyed a lot on my revisit

Got stuck into the EFLC content since I've been disappointed with the trilogy remasters, I decided to go for all achievements which I've never done before. I never realised the gold star objectives in TBOGT were cumulative so it was a lot easier than expected. The DLCs are awesome for this game  I just wish the multiplayer was still up.

Mohammed is an awesome driver! Too bad he sometimes stops and stands still forever in the middle of the road without obstacles until i start shooting and/or some cars move/hit him

Mohammed is basically free fast travel, best friend perk in the game. 

 

Though once I tired of his constant mocking of Niko and got into a fist fight with him, ended up with a nasty knockout iirc where Nikos punch smashed Mohammed's face onto his car and the poor guy simply slumped on the floor. I was wondering if it would change anything but no, next time I called Roman, Mo and his colorful mouth was back! Perhaps he took it as nothing more than a brotherly brawl

Was in the mood to bask in Liberty City's gritty landscape after watching The French Connection (one of the missions where you tail a guy on the subway was directly inspired from the film) so picked up my old crappy PS3 and loaded up an old save. Completed Three Leaf Clover despite f*cking up with the cover system and allowing myself to get shot at a whole lot. Graphically, I don't think the game holds up *too* well but still enjoy the heavy as f*ck driving physics and random little deets from the npcs.

 

Each neighbourhood does feel distinctly different, not something I can really say for V, taking the subway from Hove Beach to Easton and enjoying the range of different camera views as you scuttle along the bridge is something to behold. I used to love taking a night cab ride across Algonquin while listening to The Journey but man the cab drivers are so hilariously bad it severely undercuts the dark ambient/noire atmosphere as they reverse over peds and streetlights lol.

 

The friend system is still a pain - and while I do love the map it does feel kinda...claustrophobic. Game probably needs a Remaster more than the III era or V - think it has a lot of unrealized potential but damn I wouldn't want them to lose anything from the soundtrack - every station is gold. Each island/area feels like it has its own local soundtrack (bohan - san juan sounds - dukes - lchc/massive b soundsystem - broker - radio broker/vladivostok fm - algonquin - jazz nation in midtown - the classics/fusion/the vibe/the beat harlem area - electrochoc/integrity in the southern business districts alderney - liberty rock/the journey/public liberty radio

I was so relieved they were cumulative, but there was one mission I got stuck on real bad on Going Deep. It took me a bunch of retries, whereas everything else as fine after a few re-dos. Some of those achievements were a pain but it was honestly such a fun time. I need to restart my IV playthrough again soon!

Went over a year and a half without playing, even longer than that without playing through the story as for ages I was just messing around in freeroam or replaying random missions from different saves. Started a new game last night and it's so beautiful . Fell in love with the atmosphere and got drawn into the story all over again. I love the first part starting out in Hove Beach, just taking my time doing some taxi driving work and going on dates etc after doing the first few missions. The story pacing is perfect. Going to complete it to 100% I think, and won't rush it. Without a doubt my favourite game of all time.

Amazing, thanks. I prefer Xbox for the multiplayer cos of the 2008 nostalgia vibes haha but the visuals are bad compared to the PC version lol. For PC, is GFWL or GTAConnected the way to go?

Taking a long break from playing was definitely worth it. Even though I knew it was coming Roman's Sorrow hit hard! I hate losing the apartment that's near everything and being stuck in sh*tty Bohan commuting across a toll bridge lol. The whole thing discovering what happened and travelling there with Roman is so engaging, and the feeling of losing something and being stuck there is real. Perfectly done.

 

I'm also just loving every little detail of the game as I see it again. It's so great . Amazingly I'm even enjoying doing the pigeons and stunt jumps . Because I decided to do them on each island before the next is unlocked (to break it up more) and because at the moment it's fun just to drive around and visit different locations again it's really not so bad. Already knowing or having some knowledge of where a lot of them are instead of doing it totally blind from a guide helps as well.
