PsyWarVeteran 31
Agreed, GTA III has small details missing from it's successor, making it feel much more inferior. Details like not being able to bail out of a moving car or unbreakable glass do add up in my opinion. I also find it very weird that a 2001 game doesn't have a skeleton system for it's characters. Adrian J. 810
Honestly none of these 3D era games aged badly to me, maybe because I don't care much for graphics and base my experience on gameplay. And III has a simple but enjoyable gameplay, arcade like, after all we get money for crashing into other cars. Yet I get this feeling like Claude is the King of Liberty City, after all he popped most of the biggest bosses in town, has the games whole arsenal at his safehouses, enough bribes to make the military go away, and other goodies for completing the game 100% III also shows actions have consequences, you can't just kill a bunch of gang members or their boss and expect to parade around town like nothing happened. Claude is a criminal surrounded by criminals, and a makred man but that's where Ray's bulletproof Patriot comes in handy. The atmosphere is great, dark, gritty city, personally I love when it gets cloudy during the day, Liberty City soaks in grayness like most cities in the north east. Streets feel alive (for it's time) and dangerous, even Claude can get pulled out and lose his car. With trains running, pedestrians gathering around dead people scratching their heads, ambulance comes after rampages, you can hear music from peoples headphones and it's the only city to be actually connected to the rest of the States making it one of the most realized cities in games. SonnyForelli91 8
GTA III is a legendary game no doubts about that. It's dark and trash, the weather is always gloomy and it's the most realistic opus of the serie and the hardest one Of course many features are missing because it was the first 3D game of the serie and the game was designed to last only 1 year . I don't think the game has aged more than any other opus of the trilogy, people are saying that because of the missing features like the bikes or the fact that Claude don't speak. gta 3 was only the first of a long project for rockstar and the game wasn't even finished in fact, the ghost town is in the proof. And when it was finally released the developers were already working on vice city. Funktipus
Sam2150AD 138
I agree with the subject topic - I've just finished viewing GTA Series Videos GTA III Walkthrough. I've never liked the 3D rendition of Liberty City, it's dark, gloomy and always seems to be raining. Voice acting isn't brilliant and characters are dull. However, I like to see GTA III is a test bed for everything that came afterwards. GTA VC is a beautiful game, a lot brighter the city feels more vibrant and alive. Obviously, R* nowadays would never release GTA III in its current form today (I'm not talking about re-releases) but as a brand new game. No, the game hasn't aged well, I mean all the cars have 1 of like 5 rim designs? Windows dont have lights on at night, you can't swim, absence of aircraft (I'm not counting the Dodo as a flyable, useful vehicle). I also think, the fact 90% of gangs are aggressive towards Claude by the end of the storyline, it seriously limits your access around the city. Portland Island is practically a death sentence by the end of the game which is a nightmare if you have missed hidden packages, stunt jumps, rampages, vehicle missions etc which hampers replayability. You'll notice though, that these issues aren't present in games that have come after GTA III. GTA III has aged yes, but don't take it for what it is, take it for what it was. Co-sign. You hit on everything that makes GTA III my second favorite GTA game (after SA). And its not just because its old, VC is only one year older and I can still play it although it shows its age. I think it's because Claude has no character so you can't get invested in the story. And every other character you meet seems like a scumbag too, he has no connection with any of them. Only character I like is Salvatore and that's more because of SA and LCS Also the city is just not fun to explore It was their first 3d gta. With a "real story" I would say this is expectable

vcfan1991 129
You people who talk all this nonsense about games aging badly sound really stupid. "Oh my PONG has aged terribly! No storyline, linear controls, bad physics!" That's what you sound like.
Americana 6,199
For some reason I've always found this game much more obscure than Grand Theft Auto III.
mid90s 94
I think it has aged fine despite the blur effect. That can be jarring at first.
