This game has aged much worse than Vice City despite only coming out one year before it

Obviously it's overall a groundbreaking game but it hasn't aged well for me. And its not just because its old, VC is only one year older and I can still play it although it shows its age.

I think it's because Claude has no character so you can't get invested in the story. And every other character you meet seems like a scumbag too, he has no connection with any of them. Only character I like is Salvatore and that's more because of SA and LCS

Also the city is just not fun to explore

The absence of the bikes and helicopters are the main things that make GTA 3 looks so older compared to VC, at least IMO.

Yeah. It lacks a lot compared to Vice City and San Andreas. But the atmosphere is better compared to the two (VC's is good but not as good as III's and SA is too brown).

I don't think so. When you play Grand Theft Auto III in 2021 you know it's an old game, but it doesn't try to be anything else. It's a really simple and good game.

Also, for some reason, the game looks much worse than Grand Theft Auto III... maybe it's the colors?

GTA III’s core mechanics haven’t aged that well, but to be honest none of the 3D era GTAs have.

Even for their time 3D era GTAs were pretty archaic compared to other games and it’s only more obvious the older they get.

Shooting in manual aim is perhaps the worst. My God. After playing GTA IV where its shooting mechanics are smooth and responsive trying to shoot anyone in GTA III is bloody horrendous. Even auto-aim which is the more tolerable of the two is tedious, but manual aim almost makes it unplayable. I don’t know how I ever tolerated it back in the day.

I love GTA III for its brooding atmosphere, city etc, but if it wasn’t for those things I don’t think I would ever go back to it. Vice City at least has the benefit of Tommy and some of the new goodies it introduced.

You are talking about a game that literally kicked off the whole 3D Era.

What did you expect from a game that was released in 2001?

Well my point is that VC which only came out one year later still has aged much better so its really not about time and more about some decisions Rockstar made in GTA 3 like a mute MC. Its a groundbreaking game but just not fun to play anymore for me

you find auto aim easier than manual aim on PC? 🤔 I would pay rockstar 60 dollars just to have a standard mode for both gta iii and vc on console.

Honestly I think the things you listed were more of a budget/being rushed issue than an age issue. I think GTA VC aged just as bad as GTA III.

Yeah, for you that is.

I honestly find it very enjoyable.

That is, if you like GTA games with difficulty and other things.

PS: I prefer if Claude/Fido stayed silent rather than having a annoying voice.

out of curiosity, if Claude was to randomly speak (ala SR1 style) what type of voice do you imagine him having?

I'm not sure Julius.

I think I would imagine him having a voice that would fit a silent killer.

III has the best atmosphere in the series.

GTA VC from the very start wasn't a great game. What made it good was the setting (the 80-ies) and the music. The map was small, with little details, and the amount of new features wasn't particularly overwhelming. VC felt... empty, whereas III felt deserted if you see what I mean? Empty alleys suited III atmophere, but in VC it seemed out of place.

GTA III on another hand is pretty damn good, either 20 years ago or now. You can take any element of it, and they'll all be quite impressive. An amazing choice of radio stations, a well designed city - even the story is arguably the most realistic in the series.

I can see where the OP is coming from slightly though, Vice City added a lot of QoL tweaks to the game that GTA3 lacks, small things like being able to damage cars with melee weapons or your fist, being able to dive out of cars, being able to shoot people through car windows, etc.

the 3D era games were all transitionary games, 3 especially. Playing the first 2 GTAs made me realize that 3 was basically just a third-person version of those ones except there’s this newfound emphasis on exploration. Then you got Vice City which introduced elements like the businesses or like Ash mentioned those little programming details that became mainstays in the series. Then San Andreas came in with its large map and character customization and skill points. 3 is certainly the most dated of the PS2 trilogy when we look at it like that, the first step to the GTA we know today.

The controls on this game (and VC) are just ass, which completely kills off playing it on consoles, its fine on PC but there's a lot of room for improvement, but I give it a pass just because its the first 3D GTA.

GTA 3 plays exactly the same as it did the first time I played it on PS2 and was absolutely blown away. Quite frankly, I wouldn't want it any other way.

The whole point of GTA III was it made the GTA series as a whole go into a whole new direction. GTA as everyone knew it at the time, went to be a totally different type of game when GTA III came out. GTA III was the first GTA to be in 3D, the first to be third person rather than topdown, the first to have an actual storyline and the first to speaking characters. The reason there was more to do in VC and SA was because VC and SA were add-ons of GTA III.

Think of VC and SA as standalone DLC. VC and SA served as incremental upgrades to the GTA III engine. Just like when VC was originally supposed to be a mission pack for GTA III and later became a standalone game, SA introduced many game mechanics that later made their way to GTA IV and V.

Everything you're criticizing GTA III for is you comparing it to GTA's that came out after it. It's one thing to enjoy VC more because there's more to do, but comparing GTA III to VC because GTA III "aged so much worse" than VC, is like comparing how any game was when it first came out to how it was after expansion packs and updates came out for it.

Game developers come out with new stuff for a game over time that wasn't in the game when it first came out but later got added in an expansion pack or DLC or update. Rockstar was doing that same exact thing for GTA III when VC and SA came out because GTA III is essentially the base game when it comes to the 3D universe.

Case in point, don't compare an older game to a newer game, then bash the older game for not being like the new game.

This is why i think keyboard and mouse are a must if you are playing this game now. In gta sa the manual aim is ok tho.

You tolerated it because you didn't know anything else. When you first played it, it blew your mf mind LMAO, it did for all of us. But its with any game that evolves its features, if they did their job right, when you go back your going to ask yourself, "HOW DID I EVER LIVE WITHOUT THAT?!!"

Its the natural order of things. BET, people will be saying the exact same thing about GTA V 15-20 years from now.

Personally, I have nothing but love and respect, but going backwards after vice city and SA is too much. I can barely go back to Vice City without realizing how much is missing. Think about it, before SA, Pedestrians are nothing but props to maim, kill, and have someone to steal a car from. You don't interact live with anybody really. We won't even get to the fact that you drowned if you fell into a puddle.

Good points. Vice City has aged pretty badly too.
