How popular is GTA Online right now?

I think it peaked during Doomsday or Casino Heist? I remember it being most sold game in 2017. Even with the Fortnite and all the other FOTM craze we've had GTAO is still stupidly popular (at least for a non-F2P game that's over 5 years old). I'm sure it's still top 10 on console and top 5 on PC after they gave it away for free on Epic

At some point, there will be no one left to buy gta5.

Yet at the same time, no body plays it.

GTA V and Red Dead 2 are still in the top 10 games sold for weekly charts.

It's still popular after all these years. If it wasn't, don't you think R* would stop trying to milk it?

More popular than RDRO will ever be. 🤣

Is it even fair to compare the two? Two completely different games in my opinion. Two completely different crowds.
To me it's like comparing the success of a soccer game to that of a hockey game.

Of course it's fair.

They're both R*, they're both open worlds, and they're both videogames after all, what else is there to compare an open world R* videogame to, other than another one?

And given that you yourself are posting stats comparing GTA's numbers to the likes of FIFA, COD, Animal Crossing etc, my comparison is closer than yours, lol. I mean, to use your own reasoning, the GTA and FIFA/Animal Crossing crowds are wildly different, much more so than with my example/comparison. 🤣

My "comparison" wasn't a comparison GTA's of success to other titles.. It was a listing of the top ten games by units sold for the UK to prove that GTA is far from a "dead game" like so many claim. To show that many are still buying the game despite being it being made in 2013.

As for your claim that the only characteristics that are important, when comparing them, are the fact it's open world video game made by Rockstar is extremely shallow thinking, something I wouldn't expect from you.
Those qualities you mentioned are the few things the games have in common. They are in a different genre, with a different narrative, technological limitations, and overall mood.
That is why I said it is like comparing the success of different sports games to each other. Sure, a soccer game and a golf game may be made by the same company, but it doesn't mean they are target towards the same audience, nor does it have the same level of widespread appeal.
And you know as well as I do that more people are interested in a modern day setting then they are in a western one.

I want to end with if we look at Red Dead's sales numbers, it's far from an unsuccessful game. As it sits right now it is the 13th most successful game in video game history, by sales units.

Must point out, not that I feel it wasn't obvious, my initial post was in jest. I never said those were the only characteristics that were important, just pointing out some similarities is all as not much can be truly comparable to what GTA is/does IMHO. Certainly not the other games you listed. That said, the 2 games are of the same ilk (open world online I mean) and by the same developer. They share much in common so my point stands that it's much more comparable to GTA compared to other games. Especially as R* themselves use one to promote the other.

If you can compare sales with other, vastly different games to highlight GTA not being dead, I can surely do the same to, albeit rather flipantly, show their older game is much more popular than their latest release.

For the record, I've never said RDR2 wasn't a success either, never once said that as day one sales prove otherwise quite clearly. Nor have I once suggested GTA is a dead game, I laugh at that when I see others try to suggest that part to be honest. It's so far from dead, shoot, just by seeing R* update it and now looking to push it onto a 3rd generation highlights just how strongly R* see the games shelf life.

All I said was it's more popular than R*'s other game is, more just to mock how RDRO could be significantly more successful if it wasn't so restrictive, had such a slow build, or had more care from the developer to listen to the playerbase like they've said they do. I ask you not to read to much into that and go squabble with someone else. Don't be disheartened because I slam the game for wasting so much of it's potential. That's all on R* baby.

Rockstar has handled RDO terribly. I mean I doubt it would ever be as popular as GTA Online just because of the setting but they barely put any effort so its a failure. 2+ years later it still has barely any meaningful content, wtf?

in my opinion its not about the crowd, they are both open world games made by the same company.

rdo had the potention to be huge(not gta huge but huge nonetheless) but the game was so mismanaged since launch it wasnt even funny, they killed that game.

Yeah I don't think they can save it anymore. I mean Online had a rocky start too but they clearly wanted to fix it and put a lot of effort into making it enjoyable. With RDR Online they apparently don't give a sh*t

Many people bought the game because the story mode and maybe jumped in and tried the online part a moment before they realised that it would never be interesting enough, so sales numbers doesn't necessarily say anything about how popular the online part is

Well, it consistently hits 140k-150k concurrent players only on Steam and the game itself sold approx. 15-20 million units in 2020.OqvqIh8.jpg

COD fans have literally no taste at all lmao

On topic, but I'm the only one who finds it weird how, in spite of GTAO still being popular all these years, no one really talks about it in more mainstream places?

Like, aside from when an update drops and the hype eventually falls down, I just don't see people talking about the game instead of *insert BR flavor of the month here* or whatever.

Even on Twitch, most GTA V streams are FiveM related instead of GTAO.

Because if poor management and lack of updates or communication from devs. Also gta online has the most unseasonal amount of players. While it is popular, there is nothing to talk about with the game

and streamers play fivem because of hackers

That's the case for lots of older Multiplayer games..I don't hear people talking about World of Warcraft or Elder Scrolls Online anymore either.

I'm the first to give RDRO the kick in it deserves, lol. But I don't believe it's too late. However 2021 is key for R* so I am hoping R* really steps things up and offers more gameplay and freedom. If not, then it'll be done for I feel. 2020 in RDRO was shockingly poor and that surely can't afford another year like that.
