How should GTA VI handle Trump and how divisive American politics are now?

Well, judging by how the other GTAs went... GTA 6 has been in development since circa 2013, which means that it will be full of Obama and the like jokes that will no longer be relevant when/if the game comes out.

Unless R* re-gains their sanity and don't base the game in the current time.

Meh, most of the political satire comes from the radio stations. There's no reason they would have locked all that down during pre-production. I'd imagine they save that stuff for closer to the end of production.

Either way, they tend not to get that specific with the political figures. More often than not the politicians are just cliche stand-ins for the right or the left.

this is Rockstar we are talking about; all of the GTA titles have massive amounts of satire and parodies especially towards politics and famous figures.

how could they not make fun of the fact Donald Trump, a man with no real political background became our president with the rest of his billionaire family holding high positions.

Not really, the last two GTA Games are set in the year they are released so GTA VI being full of Obama stuff would be weird to say the least..

But they are developed, and the stories are written many years before. GTA VI could have been in development or the script was finished way before Trump got elected. In an interview Dan Houser said he had finished the RDR2 script way back in 2012.

Quote

In early 2011, Dan began chatting with Rockstar San Diego about how Red Dead Redemption 2 would look and who the characters would be. Late that summer, he says, he had a “broad outline and rough flow of the game defined.” By fall 2012, his team had completed rough scripts for many of the game’s missions and started doing read-throughs on video conference calls with directors of game play, art design, and animation from Rockstar offices around the world. On those calls, Dan, who took some acting classes in school, sometimes performed every role. Says motion-capture director Rod Edge, “If the character is high intellect and has Dan’s energy, his acting is perfect.”

Yeah but unlike RDR2 GTA now takes place in modern day so I doubt that they will just act like Trump never happened. Its not like GTA stories depend much on current US politics, they could just update some stuff (its mostly the radio and internet anyway that focus on that part) while keeping the overall main story.

As always, the game should make fun of everybody. However, the humor has to be a lot more subtle and intelligent than what's featured in V. Redemption 2's type of humor and sarcasm is what they should follow.

I mean I love RDR2 but  the humor was pretty weak and barely there & it didn't really make fun of everybody

I think they should follow the GTA IV balance for VI.

Definitely a lot of material to use but hopefully they aren't so hamfisted with the satire like they were in V. I prefer the more subtler styles that the 3D universe and gta 4 used.

“Broad outline and rough flow of the game" means he was nowhere near a finished script. He likely hadn't even started yet. According to the actors he was writing it as they went along. That's why it took five years to perform their parts.

Either way, like I said earlier, the politics would mostly be done via the radio and there's no reason they can't be rewriting and re-recording that up until the end. And they likely won't get into specifics anyway.

Well, considering trump will no longer be president, I think they'll find a way to mock Biden or Harris as well as former president trump, maybe they can mention a member of the Cleethorpes family served as president and is trying to get re elected for 2024 if gta 6 were to come out in 2023 or 2024

Trump made his name in the 80s. It's when he started teasing about running for President, it's when he wrote his book The art of deal. Everything that Trump is today could be shown in a game set in the past.

RDR2 takes itself much more seriously, story and gameplay wise.

perhaps given the time period of the Red Dead games they don't really have much to work with in parodying anything.

most people probably wouldn't get the references, just my thought.

Did you just use a Toyota interior to compare 2013 to 2020 lol.

While I’ll agree that the culture jump from IV to V was bigger than how it would be now, staying in the present would just be better decision for gameplay, especially online. Things like the cell phone, internet, hacking, etc. are big things that have affected gta gameplay. Taking all that away just doesn’t make any sense. Plus R* has stuff to work with in this era, for one a fricking pandemic, advanced technology (self driving cars), and the exaggerated politics could play a bigger role in the story.

And Rockstar have already done the 80s and the 90s, a gta vi in those times would just be a shinier gta VC. Going back further in time would just be pushing it imo. A modern version of VC would just be cool to see.

Personally I don't want the pandemic to play a role in GTA - lockdown in my safehouse? No thanks. Self driving cars? If anything that's an advert for going back in the past to me.

I'd argue Rockstar has already "done" modern 2010s too. If they have "done" the 90s then I guess RDR2 should be deleted as the western era was already "done" in the previous two games.

I respect that you are pro-modern and I am not, but for me this puts me off modern even more. Respectfully disagree.

He's been doing the same stuff since the 80s.

Why? I'm sick and tired of Trump. Dealing with him in a video game just for some cheap jokes would get old very quickly.

Instead of parodying President Trump I'd rather they go back and parody him when he was a businessman in the 70s/80s when he was just starting out and building his empire. The thing that made Donald Love work in III and LCS was that he was a shady businessman with skeletons in his closet.

jkMH3Gh.jpg?1

I want to see a Donald trump like figure be it Donald Love again or they create a similar character if he doesn't cross universes maybe introduce Lyle Cleethorpes from IV or his father. He'd have his own demons not cannibalism maybe hookers or drugs or a love of midget hookers or maybe he has a sexual attraction to food and f*cks fried chicken or some sh*t.

You'd help him build his buildings by dealing with Mafia controlled unions and getting them off his back, killing city officials in order to get approval to build his buildings, and probably the Mafia when he's trying to build his casinos. That would be much better than parodying Trump as a president.

I actually agree and I am a Trump supporter.

I bet they put some entitled orange douche in a golf club somewhere and maybe even have some side missions skirting around him. Obviously with the time difference they won't be going for him him but just a bit of a jab none the less.

It would be classic R* to poke fun at it, but knowing the state of the SJW's and weak minded cancel culture enthusiasts that seem to run the planet theses days, I would avoid something like this at all costs.

Do you really think Rockstar cares about nonexistent “cancel culture”

Have the radio reference President Jock Cranley in news stories and if VI is in Vice City make a parody of the Mar-A-Lago. Other than that, have Trump and his politics at a minimum in the next game.

Trump administration, QAnons, etc. That level of crazy stuff you used only see in video games (like GTA) and on "that" part of the internet, but now it's all happening in real life, before our very own yes, so making "satire" from that has really become invalid and would be just awkward and depressing at best. Conspiracy lunatics do make interesting video game characters (The Truth), but I agree, avoiding any clear references to current politics should be avoided.

Let's say Trump and the followers do fade away from the public in couple of years, now wouldn't it feel dumb to play GTA 6 (released in 2024) with bunch of Trump references?

That's one of the arguments against a game set in modern day. When it releases it's going to be outdated.

Exactly, it really is either the modern day setting without politics (game would feel unrealistic...) or past era setting. If you want to include/explore serious cultural/political phenomenons from the real life in video games, it's better to do it posthumously after the "dust has settled" and historians have a some sort common consensus of the events and the whole story. R* did it right with GTA:SA when they included the -92 riots and police corruption, but released the game over 10 years after the real life events. BLM & MAGA riots in GTA 6? TOO SOON!
