How should GTA VI handle Trump and how divisive American politics are now?

Things were definitely "normal" in comparison back when GTA V came out. Now that Trump lost anyway, I wonder how they will handle him? I don't think you can ignore him but he already seems like a GTA parody of an american President lol

Why? I'm sick and tired of Trump. Dealing with him in a video game just for some cheap jokes would get old very quickly.

Instead of parodying President Trump I'd rather they go back and parody him when he was a businessman in the 70s/80s when he was just starting out and building his empire. The thing that made Donald Love work in III and LCS was that he was a shady businessman with skeletons in his closet.

I want to see a Donald trump like figure be it Donald Love again or they create a similar character if he doesn't cross universes maybe introduce Lyle Cleethorpes from IV or his father. He'd have his own demons not cannibalism maybe hookers or drugs or a love of midget hookers or maybe he has a sexual attraction to food and f*cks fried chicken or some sh*t.

You'd help him build his buildings by dealing with Mafia controlled unions and getting them off his back, killing city officials in order to get approval to build his buildings, and probably the Mafia when he's trying to build his casinos. That would be much better than parodying Trump as a president.

It all depends on when and where the game is set I suppose. There's a lot of room for good, modern satire in the fact that America is as divided as it is. Especially if they focus in on the media's role in that. Maybe throw in a few lines that show the President seems to be an active participant in that division rather than a calming voice of reason.

I think they'll keep the politics local again though without much focus on the President. I could see Jock Cranley finally winning an election and being the Governor if the game is set in a modern Vice City. Maybe he's running for reelection, that way they've got an opposing candidate to make fun of as well.

Also, with the way crazy conspiracy theorists have been legitimized lately, I could see Ron's podcast being a real radio show on one of the talk stations now.

Yeah I'd rather they focus on the local politicians instead.

A corrupt city councilman that then becomes mayor that the protagonist could do missions for would make much more sense. Help them during their campaign by taking out some of the obstacles in their way. Obtaining money to fund their campaign from drug dealing. Rigging the election like Toni did in LCS by destroying voting machines, maybe killing or threatening other candidates, and blackmailing people.

We know literally nothing about the game. I just assume it'll be set in present day because it'll most likely be a numbered title and every numbered title except GTA 2 is set in the year of its release.

Whether it's set in the past or the present I expect the satire will still be there. That means plenty of references to modern day issues, themes, and politics.

Why the hell wouldn’t it be set to present day with how gta online is set up?

We've just had two games set back to back in present day IV and V. There really isn't much they can add to the next game that would be new if it's set in present day.

Not much has changed since 2013. Take this example of this car it's pretty much the same thing just shinier. Same thing with a modern day game we're going to be getting the same themes just exaggerated even more.

Did you just use a Toyota interior to compare 2013 to 2020 lol.

While I’ll agree that the culture jump from IV to V was bigger than how it would be now, staying in the present would just be better decision for gameplay, especially online. Things like the cell phone, internet, hacking, etc. are big things that have affected gta gameplay. Taking all that away just doesn’t make any sense. Plus R* has stuff to work with in this era, for one a fricking pandemic, advanced technology (self driving cars), and the exaggerated politics could play a bigger role in the story.

And Rockstar have already done the 80s and the 90s, a gta vi in those times would just be a shinier gta VC. Going back further in time would just be pushing it imo. A modern version of VC would just be cool to see.

Not true. What do you use the phone in the game for honestly? Story related phone calls, hanging out with friends/dates and in IV cheat codes. In V they went back to the old way of smashing buttons to activate cheats so that's not necessary anymore. With a game set in the past you can still call people up on pay phones and pagers. The internet? Please browsing the ingame internet to make a purchase could be replaced by actually going to stores, dealerships, and for sale signs on properties. There's also another thing that not having the internet allows you to do and it's stealing those things this is Grand Theft Auto after all. Show up at the car dealership, ask for a test drive, and then steal that bitch.

Hacking? Please. The hacking in online is a joke and isn't really a big part of the gameplay like at all. Hacking is better suited for a game like Watch Dogs and not GTA.

All those jet cars and flying bikes? That can easily be included with a game set in the past.

Just make those things top secret advanced military projects that are being sold on the black market. It's not that hard the online kiddies could still have their flying cars and bikes in a past setting and Online already ignores the current timeline anyway.

Self driving cars? Since when do criminals drive around in Teslas and self driving cars? What do you want them to do next huh go to the starbucks and discuss drug deals while sipping on lattes? No thanks.

When I first saw the thread title I assumed it was only a matter of time before it turned into a stupid and angry political debate. How did I not foresee the old "past vs modern" argument popping back up? We were long overdue for it.

This reminds me of why everyone tried to rationalize RDR2's title lol

"Every Red Dead has a R so therefore it'll be ____"

For all we know it might be officially named Vice City 2

With the present, they can include all that cool stuff you mentioned and more. The past is limited and going back in time is cool for a new location but not for VC. Like I said, that game already happened. If you want to play gta VC again but with prettier graphics, get yourself a nice pc and dive into the mod shops.

I want to see a modern day drug lord like El Chapo, something new. I honestly couldn’t give a sh*t about the internet, either era is going to have tons of political satire that we’ve seen so many times before. Phones however have been embedded into the gameplay, phone calls after missions, calls to start missions, annoying calls by npcs (Roman), calls to set up activities or for help. It would be pointless to take all that away for a time period. And self driving cars would be cool for something like a free taxi ride or something. More advanced tech that’s not advanced enough to be overly futuristic like CP but enough for it to be familiar and provide advantages in combat/gameplay.

With all that being said, whatever time period their going to put this game in, it better be damn good.

All of it sounds sick af.

Robbing Car dealerships, Strip Malls could be an interesting sidegig. Hire some known associates and go in guns blazing or do it at night stealthily. Keep the car or sale it for profit. Same could go for home invasions. It won't have to be handcrafted either, just pure systemic gameplay.

I believe Rockstar will go towards a more Hitman, MGS esque mission design in their future games. The Diamond Casino Heist was already pointing at this direction and now Cayo Perico Heist is certainly much more open than that.

So back to Trump. If Rockstar decides to parody him I don't want it to be in the era of President Trump but instead during his business days in the 80s as shady businessman Trump.

By being set in a different era (my personal ideal is 60's-70's) and ignoring this bullsh*t completely. Thanks in advance.

They haven't made a non-numbered title in over 10 years, I think it's clear they no longer produce spin-off titles and use those resources to develop Online DLCs. The odds are in favor of a numbered title.

they shouldnt. f*ck the politics. f*ck modern times. game should be set in the past. as far as GTAO they can just add futuristic cars and weapons and heists again. if people can play this GTAO now why wouldnt they play a new GTAO game set in the past but with everything they want in it even if it doesnt make sense. the current GTAO doesnt make any sense so who cares.

Please stop turning every thread into a "when will the game be set" thread. If you want to have the same pointless discussion over and over again, at least keep it in the relevant thread.
