Red dot/sticker/marker on taxis

What is the red dot/sticker/marker on taxis? You can see it in the front (radiator grille) or in the back (trunk lid).

 

Looks like Bindi (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bindi_(decoration)).

Maybe it is Taxi medallion (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taxi_medallion).

In real life, it's a distress signal. If the driver feels endangered by a passenger, a button can be pushed out of the passenger's view, which causes that light to flash. 

 

Has anyone tried firing a weapon while riding in the back of a cab to see if this works in-game?

Firing a weapon while riding in a cab will cause the cab to stop and the driver to flee immediately so it probably doesn't.
