Jammsbro
I' pretty new, rank 25 and have auto lock. Playing the moonshine missions and the enemies are really heavy numbers-wise. Some of them are really tanky too. I'm out in the swamp, night, snow, mist, foliage everywhere and I can see red dots but literally can't see the enemy. Even with eagle eye most times there is no flash for the enemy. I've had a ton of times where I have been ten feet from an enemy and hitting aim in the general direction hoping for auto aim to find them (because I genuinely can't see anything at all) and nothing happens. Enemies seem to have predator vision in the same circumstances and if it wasn't for tonics I'd fail missions. I#m mostly having fun with the game but it's already become pretty grindy and the fact that in a medium such as gaming (which is pretty much just an interactive light show) you can't actually see things so much of the time. It's pretty bad. Night time, mountains, snow, mist, rain. We actually have to be able to see what the hell is going on. If it wasn't for eagle eye the game would be borderline unplayable. Why would they make a game so difficult to actually see whats going on. I know you are going to rag on this, but I bet every one of you knows exactly what I mean. zPhoenix
I play with no auto lock. It does take a different playstyle but it is quite doable. The main problem is enemies having x-ray vision and me not being able to see them or worse, see them and can't hit them because in this game leaves and grasses block not only the red aiming dot but even bullets. kcole4001 and StyxTx
StyxTx
Free aim is a lot of fun and a real challenge. Once you get used to it and get better it isn't impossible to do anything. Just takes more effort and no matter how often you do any one thing it's a challenge every time. If you're fighting a large number of enemies you just need to take cover, frequently move from cover to cover so they can't trap you, and take them out one at a time or use dynamite or fire bottles if you have some enemies in a cluster. It takes more strategy in free aim and you sure can't just race through it like you can with auto aim. I agree that enemies have x-ray vision and their weapons, particularly revenuers, have more range and cause more damage then our more "powerful" weapons do. It takes 2 head shots or heart shots to take them out most of the time. The other day I could actually see the hole and blood in the heart of enemies I shot there since I was practically in their face when I did it. They fall down then get back up. It's really BS. In the meantime, a leaf can deflect our bullet. Going against other players, forget free aim since free aim and auto aim players are mixed into the same lobbies. Most players use autoaim and PiB and that puts them at a huge advantage. Defensive does counteract autoaim and PiB for the most part though but it also will not allow the defensive player to auto aim or use PiB against other players unless a player shoots and hits you and turns red. Jammsbro
I get what both of you are saying. It's not a skill or aiming issue, I play free aim on pretty much everything. My point is that in most fights in mist or at night or heavy cover, you literally can't see the enemies.

Yet, let's say you're on top of a hill and you decide to drop down the backside of the hill away from enemies to move to a different location. Somehow all the NPCs know where you are the entire time. Maybe they have that radar thing we have. I wouldn't mind not seeing them, but they shouldn't be able to see me either. Hell, I can hop on my horse and ride a good way down the road and into the woods to the point that the edge of the radar is no longer red and the enemy ON FOOT eventually comes along and finds me right off the bat. I'm like...RIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIGHT. It's just another R* ridiculous game thing. I don't think I've ever run into seeing the dots but not seeing the enemy, but then I haven't spent a lot of time lately in the snow. There are graphic glitches at times on a server where things are laggy. What platform are you on? I'm on PC. djb204
Free Aim No Dead Eye No Ability Cards Regular Ammo Only I wish there was an optional Hardcore Free-Aim like this. PvP in Free-Roam would be tons more fun. Take the distant Trader goods delivery missions for example... For attackers, all it takes is hitting the horse with a SINGLE explosive round with ‘Paint It Black’ and the wagon is done for. For defenders, explosive rounds with hard lock-on and ‘Paint It Black’ to any player that gets too close intentionally or not. Lock-on with explosive rounds, and ‘Paint It Black’ spoil the experience. These Free-Roam PvP encounters could be so much more dynamic and fun. Free-Aim increases that chances of shots missing their mark dramatically, and it you combine that with no dead-eye (primarily PIB) and regular ammo only, it starts to feel like the stagecoach robbery scene in 3:10 To Yuma. I remember Hardcore Free-Roam in Redemption1, and those Free-Roam PvP gun fights were the best. Basically, these lock-on, dead-eye, and explosive rounds are everyone’s “Go-To” in these encounters 99% of the time, and they destroy the gun-fights before they even get started. It’s sad because these PvP experiences could be so much more. aaronBLUEeyes

Hang on. You may not have x-ray vision but you have a minimap that show you the location of every bad guy that can shoot at you. And since when have leaves and grass stopped bullets in this game? I regularly shoot through plants and through the tops of hills to kill enemies. Are we playing the same game?

I constantly have situations where the minimal shows the enemy right in front of me - maybe 6' away - and I don't see it until he fires and I see a flash, and even then it is hard to see it (of course not animals since they don't fire). It is MUCH worse with the Christmas snow. I also have many cases where I have the cursor on the head of an animal, even scoped in, through grass or a leave and don't get it to turn red. I also have times when the only thing blocking a shot is a leave and it does not go through it. Why is it different I don't know. Maybe a video setting? Or a difference between PC and console? Some other players have the same issue, so it is not just me.
