Weird online fps problems

When I recently started to play gta online again, I noticed my fps was bad. 20-40 fps interior in buildings. 30-45 in free roam. I can see that my gpu usage is low, around 50-60 percent. The fps goes up as my gpu usage goes up, and drops when gpu usage drops. This only happens in public sessions. When I play single player or in a private online session my fps is normal. 60-80 everywhere and my gpu usage is at 99 percent.

How do I fix this?

Stay out of busy, public sessions. The game is packed full of sh*t and is poorly optimized. Add the horrible P2P setup and the average users terrible connection to that mix. Plus public sessions mean there are at least 3 people with a mod menu. They are messing with the session, spawning items, setting off constant explosions, etc.

That said, unless the session is near max, I normally maintain 60+ FPS while playing but it can get funky in the city if a war is going on.

Low GPU usage and low FPS indicates a CPU bottleneck. GTA V relies heavily on the main thread, no matter how many cores your CPU has. Even people with the latest and greatest CPUs (intel i9, amd ryzen 9) suffer from this problem, GTA V just doesn't care for more cores, it only wants a few very fast cores. Check your CPU load per thread, you'll probably find at least one is maxed all the time. This is because of a game engine from 2008 before multi-threading was a thing.

Go to Advanced Graphics settings, and make sure Extended Distance Scaling is off. If that doesn't help, get a session with less players in it.

Yep but nothing I try can leave me playing at 60fps consistently, no matter where I go, even in single player, playing at 1080p - with an RTX 2080 and overclocked Ryzen 7 2700. My CPU isn't being bottlenecked, but the game just doesn't use 100% of the GPU sometimes either.

Meanwhile the exact same computer is able to get a minimum of 110 fps in Forza Horizon 4, with higher graphics settings set than GTA V. Go figure, the game's just badly optimised. I'll await the Expanded & Enhanced version to see if there's any changes and if not I'll probably jump ship to the PlayStation 5 - at least there I won't have to worry about the cheating issue.

Just the game showing its age and lack of optimization.

I got the fix for me. Searched everywhere and this is a big problem for many. Answers they got is mostly cpu bottleneck. My cpu is yawning at 20-30 percent at all cores and at 50 Celsius.

I lowered my game settings and ended up at SAME fps, but LOWER GPU usage.

So I cranked up to max graphics and got 99-100 percent load at all times. But now I had 40-50 fps because of the high settings.

I found the sweet spot with high graphic settings that demanded 99 percent load and gave me decent fps at 50-70. Now I can play online again.

Hope this can help some of you to.

Happy New Year

I've told several times here, that with years my hardware got better and performance managed to stay roughly the same. From 980 GTX in 2015 to 1080 ti in 2018 and from 4790k (hell, still respectable CPU today) to 8700k and later to 3600x. My best experience was with 3600x and some tricky hand tuned RAM at 3200 with low latency, but drops are still there in populated session.  BTW, Gaffa, I've sold both of my 1080 tis just in time and now sitting with a 1060 not playing anything. Debating whether I should get 3080 or go AMD or just go f*ck myself since I'm not really going to play anything. Cheers.

Check your GPU power settings too, make sure it's not in power saving. Happy New Year!

i sometimes have the issue around bushes that the fps goes down to 37 fps for some reason.

Excellent advice, thanks. I have a slider on that setting and knocked it down a few ticks and was at 80+ in a busy session tonight. Story was 100+
